Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Stanford Cardinal vs North Carolina Tar Heels
The North Carolina Tar Heels are excited to return back to the Dean E. Smith Center for their home opener as they will host PAC-12 foe in the Stanford Cardinal. The Tar Heels have been accustomed to being ranked in the top 10 and nothing has changed this year as they opened the year at #8 while Stanford is trying to stay competitive in a solid conference that host teams like Washington, USC, UCLA, and Oregon.
Stanford Cardinal's Latest Performance :
The Stanford Cardinal are looking to take a step forward in 2018 after they finished 3rd in the PAC-12 last season but they are going to have to do that without their top player as Reid Travis transferred out of the program. Travis was the do it all guy last year for Stanford as the 6’8 forward averaged 19.5 PPG and 8.7 RPG but they will need to look elsewhere as he transferred to Kentucky this past offseason. Stanford looked good in their first game of the season as they were able to beat up on an under the radar team in Seattle. Leading the way for the Cardinal was sophomore KZ Okpala who dropped a career-high 29 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Okapala only averaged 10 PPG and 3.7 RPG but the first game was an indication of improvement for the 2nd-year player out of California. Stanford also received a solid outing out of true freshmen Cormac Ryan who scored 16 points and more remarkably went 5-6 from behind the arc. Even if Stanford is unable to generate much noise this season they do have a positive moving forward as they have some solid youth assets for years to come.
North Carolina Tar Heels's Latest Performance :
The North Carolina Tar Heels lost some important pieces from their 2017 roster as Joel Berry and Theo Pinson moved onto the NBA but as always Roy Williams reloaded with his recruiting class. The Tar Heels were able to open the season with a solid victory (78-67) over a Wofford team who beat the Tar Heels last year in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels were led by their star forward Luke Maye who dropped 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Maye is looking to take his game to the next level after a solid 2017 campaign where he dropped 16.9 PPG and grabbed 10.1 RPG in his first true year of starting experience. Garrison Brooks took another step forward for Roy Williams and the Tar Heels as the forward out of Alabama was able to drop 20 points. The 6’9 forward looks like he improved his scoring ability this past offseason as the Sophomore was only able to drop 4.5 PPG in his freshmen season. The Tar Heels will need to find consistent play out of their guards especially in the absence of Joel Berry and one of those guys is supposed to be Kenny Williams. Williams struggled to score for the Tar Heels as he went 0-3 in 29 minutes of playing time but he was able to grab 6 rebounds and dish out 5 assists.

Against The Spread Selection: North Carolina Tar Heels
My reason for the pick :
The North Carolina Tar Heels are being written off as a contender in March because of the two important assets they lost this past year but don’t sleep on the abilities of Roy Williams and company. Sure Stanford had an amazing game first go-around but UNC is 10x better than a Seattle team that won’t see much competition this season. North Carolina plays tough at home and considering the fact that it is the home opener Tar Heel fans will bring the intensity. Okpala might be a force down low but so is Luke Maye and Garrison Brooks which has me picking the Tar Heels to win at home.
Betting trends for Stanford Cardinal:
- Stanford was 4-7 SU on the road last season.
