Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

UC Davis Aggies vs Arkansas Razorbacks

The Arkansas Razorbacks will play their 1st home game of the season at Bud Walton Arena as they will host the UC Davis Aggies, the opening tip is set for 8:00 PM. The Arkansas Razorbacks are coming off a successful season as they made the NCAA tournament for a 2nd consecutive year while the UC Davis Aggies went 22-11 but lost the Big West championship game.

UC Davis Aggies's Latest Performance :

The UC Davis Aggies are looking to return back to relevancy in the Big West conference after they won the title back in 2016 but if the first game of the season was any indication of how the season is heading it could be a long one. UC Davis played host to a cross-state foe in San Francisco but they were blown out of the water as they dropped the game 76-42. The Aggies have to find a reliable scorer especially after their top scorer from 2017 has run out of eligibility. Chima Moneke was a do-it-all type of guy for the Aggies last year as the star forward averaged just shy of a double-double with 18.4 PPG and 9.6 RPG. The top returning scorer for the Aggies is the 5’9 senior TJ Shorts as he dropped 14.8 PPG in over 31 minutes of play time per game, but the guard out of California was silent in the opening game. Shorts played the most minutes out of any Aggie but he was only able to drop 2 points and dish out 3 assists. No Aggies reached double-digits in the scoring department as the three leading scorers had 8 points apiece. Junior guard Stefan Gonzalez had the best game by far for the Aggies as he had a team-high 8 points and 8 rebounds. UC Davis relies on their defense to win ball games but they can’t get into a shootout with opposing teams as they are not equipped with the weapons to score consistently.

Arkansas Razorbacks's Latest Performance :

The Arkansas Razorbacks, unlike most major conference teams, challenged themselves from the first game of the season as they took on a solid Big 12 foe in the Texas Longhorns. The Razorbacks were in control most of the game but a three from Texas with 2 seconds left tied the game and pushed it to overtime where the Razorbacks eventually fell. Arkansas was fortunate enough to receive back their star center Daniel Gafford after the 6’11 sophomore contemplated entering the NBA draft after averaging 11.8 PPG and 6.2 RPG. Gafford exploded onto the scene in the opening game of the season as he was able to record a double-double by dropping 20 points and corraling 12 rebounds. Arkansas was tasked with replacing their top scorer from 2017 in Jaylen Barford (17.9 PPG) and they look like they may have found their answer as freshmen guard Isaiah Joe dropped 17 points. With the Razorbacks missing 3 of their top 4 scorers from 2017 Mike Anderson will need to rely on inexperienced guys to lead them back to the NCAA tournament. Mason Jones and Jalen Harris are two guys who might fill the void for Anderson and company as the two young guards were able to touch double-digits in the points category for the first time in their career as they both dropped 11 points.

Against The Spread Selection: Arkansas Razorbacks

My reason for the pick :

The Arkansas Razorbacks return most of their big-name players from 2017 while the UC Davis Aggies are missing their one and only hope in Chima Moneke which has this game pointing to a blowout. As I previously stated UC Davis doesn’t have the scoring talent to have a consistent 70 points on teams which is why they rely on their defense. Arkansas has a high-powered offense who can score on the best of teams and with Arkansas already having an extreme advantage in talent they also have the home court advantage which will lead to an easy Arkansas victory.
