Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Portland Pilots vs CS Northridge Matadors

The Portland Pirates will visit the Matadome in Northridge, California, to face the Cal State Northridge Matadors on Saturday night at 10 pm EST.  The Pilots are coming off a 78-73 neutral site loss to the Mean Green of North Texas on November 10th as the Pilots allowed them to shoot over 50% from the field in the game while going 8 of 20 from three-point range.  And despite 22 points from JoJo Walker, the Pilots failed in a second half rally as they suffered their second straight loss of the season.

The Matadors went to 0-2 on the season as they fell on the road to Loyola Marymount in their last outing as 21 points along with 10 assists for James Batemon allowed the Lions to pull away late in the second half en route to the victory.  The Lions also outrebounded the matadors 37-22 in the matchup while shooting 49% from the field.

Portland Pilots's Latest Performance :

The Pilots went down by nine points at the half versus North Texas and were never able to gain control of the game in their last matchup as they suffered their second straight loss.  As stated, Portland shot 48% from the field along with nailing 9 of 21 three points in addition to getting 22 points from Walker along with 18 from Marcus Shaver Jr, yet, lost the game due to allowing the Mean Green to shoot 53% from the field for the game.

This has been the case all season as the Pilots offense remains as potent as ever, however, their defensive mishaps have been many, thus leaving the team ranking in the 300’s in every major defensive category thus far.  They should improve in this matchup as they will be facing a Northridge squad that is just as awful on offense as they are on defense.

CS Northridge Matadors's Latest Performance :

The Matadors have had some rough breaks thus far in the season and will certainly look to do much better in this outing versus the Portland Pilots.  After losing their opener for 2018 by only three points to the Lobos of New Mexico, they could not maintain their play in the second half as the Lions of Loyola Marymount pulled away late in the game.  Lamine Diane score 15 points along with pulling down 8 rebounds in the loss while Terrell Gomez had 14 points for Cal State Northridge.  And despite going 5 of 13 for the night, James Batemon scored 21 points for the night for the Lions while, as the team, the Lobos shot 49% from the field while outrebounding the Matadors 37-22.

As stated, the Matadors are allowing teams to shoot 50% from the field this season while giving up 83 points per outing.  This must certainly get better if they are to improve over time.  Of course, with the Pilots averaging 83 points per game in 2018, they will have to shore up these vulnerabilities very soon in order to give themselves a chance to win.

How Portland Pilots & CS Northridge Matadors Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Portland is 1-1 ATS while the OU is 0-1

Cal State Northridge is 1-1 ATS while the OU is 1-1

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

The Pilots will look to get a convincing win in this contest with the Matadors struggling in every way.  Of course, Portland has had their troubles recently, however, their offense is dangerous and only needs some help from its defense in order to reel off some wins moving forward.  The Matadors will certainly come out to play in this matchup, yet, look for the road team to capitalize on the offensive end while also being aggressive on the defensive end versus a squad in Northridge that is not very good.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Portland Pilots

My reason for the pick :

I will back the road team in this instance as they have the most reliable offense.  And while the defense for the Pilots have a way to go before they can become defensive stoppers, they will hold up just enough versus a struggling offense in which to get the win in the end.  In all, the Pilots will begin to pull away from the Matadors at some point in the game, thus allowing them to right their current ship.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Look for the over to be the play in this contest as both defenses have been very shaky to begin the season.  With that being the case, the over will be the strong play as I envision the Pilots having a solid night on the offensive end.  Also, look for the Matadors and their struggling offense to show and prove in this contest with Portland’s defense being less than stellar to begin the season; However, look for the scoreboard to light up in favor of the road team throughout.

Betting trends for Portland Pilots:

  • The Over is 5-1 in Matadors last six games
