Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Tennessee State Tigers vs Kentucky Wildcats

The Tennessee State Tigers will travel to Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky, to battle the 10th ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Friday night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Tigers stand at 2-3 on the season while halting a two-game winning streak in suffering an 80-77 road loss versus the Cal State Northridge Matadors on Tuesday night as they rallied from a 10-point halftime lead in which to outscore the matadors 39 – 32 in the second half. However, the rally fell short as Lamine Diane along with Terrell Gomez sparked the offense for Northridge in scoring 29 and 22 points, respectively, in the win.

On the other hand, the Kentucky Wildcats won their third straight game after opening the 2018 season with a neutral site loss to the Duke Blue Devils in whipping up on the Virginia Military Keydets on November 18th as they outrebounded the Keydets by a 41 – 21 margin, however, were outshot both from the field as well as from 3-point range as the Keydets shot 47% for the night along with 50% from 3 point range. Of course, the Wildcats ability to get to the free-throw line was the difference in the game as they finished the contest being successful on 29 of 35 free throw attempts for the night while the Keydets only got to the line 5  times total.

Tennessee State Tigers's Latest Performance :

Tennessee State was only four points away from winning three straight games as they would fall to the Cal State Northridge Matadors in their last outing as they simply could not put the ball in the basket in shooting 39% from the floor during the contest yet allowing the Matadors to  shoot a tad over 52% from the field for the night. In fact, this matchup for Tennessee State was the first game in three outings to where they did not score at least 80 points. Nonetheless, the Tigers will look to reset themselves entering this match up with the Kentucky Wildcats as their offense has certainly been the reason for their success thus far.

On the other hand, the defense for Tennessee State is allowing teams to score 73 points per game on 45% shooting per  outing. As stated, this was certainly true in their last outing as Northridge was able to get their shots where and whenever they needed versus a shaky defense for Tennessee State. With that being said, Kentucky will definitely try to exploit these weaknesses on Friday; However, the Tigers must be able to put in a much better performance than they have recently in which to keep this game tight.

Kentucky Wildcats's Latest Performance :

The Kentucky Wildcats have certainly rebounded after their game 1 lost to Duke this year. Since, they have not only stepped things up offensively, but, have also increased their aggressiveness on the defensive end of the court as well in allowing opponents to score only 66 points per game during their stellar 3 game stretch. In fact, the 82 points allowed to Virginia Military in their last outing was the most that they have allowed an opponent this year ( aside from the Blue Devils  who put up 119).  Regardless, the Wildcats were able to win thanks to their ability to draw fouls. As stated, Kentucky went to the free throw line 35 times compared to only five times for Virginia Military.

Reid Travis led Kentucky in scoring with 22 points along with six rebounds while PJ Washington and Quade green chipped in 19 and 17 points, respectively, in the win for the Wildcats. And while the offense for Kentucky has not had any major issues this year in shooting 48% from the field, their defense will certainly need to perform much better versus a Tigers offense that  averages in the mid-80s per game on 45% shooting.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

As one can probably tell, the Tennessee State Tigers have indeed  had their issues on both sides of the ball in 2018. With that being said, they will certainly come out focused in this matchup, however, the Wildcats of Kentucky will also be brimming with confidence entering this matchup as they have won their last three games in blowout fashion. In all, look for this game to be interesting in the first half as I really do not see the Tigers hanging around  much after the second half begins.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Kentucky Wildcats

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Wildcats in this matchup as they are not only the better team, but, are very much playing consistent during their last few outings. In all, look for the Wildcats to take control of this game from the start as they will want to push the ball on offense  while also allowing their bigs to get physical with the frontcourt for Tennessee State during the contest as well. As stated, Kentucky will certainly control the pace of this match up throughout and will cruise over a Tigers team that has been very inconsistent on both sides of the ball lately.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

I will back to over in this matchup as it has been the call in three of the last five games for both Tennessee State along with Kentucky. Also, with Tennessee State not playing the best on the defensive end of the court, look for the Wildcats to take advantage of this throughout the game while pushing the ball in which to obtain either easy fast break points or spot up jumpers behind the arc. In all, look for the over to be the strong play in a matchup that Kentucky will dominate.

Betting trends for Tennessee State Tigers:

  • The Tigers are 1-5-1 ATS  in last 7 games

  • The over is 5-0 in Tigers last five games

Betting trends for Kentucky Wildcats:

  • The Wildcats a 1-4 ATS  in last 5 games

  • The Wildcats are  1 – 2 ATS in last three home games

  • The over is 7-2 in Wildcats last nine games
