Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

New Mexico Lobos vs St. Mary’s Gaels

The New Mexico Lobos will travel to McKeon Pavilion in Moraga, California, to face the Gaels of Saint Mary’s University  on Friday night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.  New Mexico halted a two game winning streak by falling at the hands of their  in-state rival New Mexico state by a 100 – 65 score on the road as they went down by 27 points at the half while shooting only 28% for the game en route to the deflating loss.

On the other hand, St Mary’s erected themselves out of a rough  patch of play early on in losing four straight, by winning their second straight game over the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats by a 93 – 61 score at home as Jordan Hunter along with Jordan Ford scored 24 and 23 points, respectively, for Saint Mary’s in the win.

New Mexico Lobos 's Latest Performance :

The offense for the Lobos is ranked 35th in the nation in scoring with a tad over 84 points per game on the seasons. Also, the Lobos are ranked seventh in the nation in 3-point shooting as they connect on 43% of their long balls on a nightly basis. Furthermore, New Mexico has scored at least 80 points in each of their games this season, aside from their last outing when they were only able to put 65 points versus New Mexico State in a huge setback.

As stated, the Lobos were only allowed to shoot 28% on the night while going 32% from three-point range while being led by Drue Drinnon with 13 points off the bench.  Vance Jackson along with Karim Ezzeddine chipped in 11 points in the lost for New Mexico. On the defensive end, New Mexico State  was solid from the floor in shooting 48% for the night while landing 12 3-pointers during the contest as JoJo Zamora along with Ivan Aurrecoechea had 27 and 23 points for the Aggies as Maura went a perfect 6-6 for long-range for the night.

After such a terrible outing, look for the Lobos to get their offense going once again in this matchup vs St Mary’s. Nonetheless, for New Mexico, while their offense has certainly can the catalyst for their winning ways thus far in 2018, its defense has been one of the worst in the nation in allowing teams to shoot 47% from the field per night while allowing 86 points per outing, overall.

St. Mary’s Gaels 's Latest Performance :

St Mary’s has had a rough go of it in 2018 as they are currently only one game above 500 for the season. As stated, after starting the season 3-0, the Gaels lost their next four games, total, before playing much better basketball in winning two games in a row before their meeting with the Bethune Cookman Wildcats. In this outing, the Gaels shot a tad under 60% from the floor while nailing 10 3-pointers as Ford  accounted for three of those long balls while Malik Fitts also went 2-3 from long-range in ending with 12 points on the night.

On the defensive end, St Mary’s allowed Bethune-Cookman only 39% shooting on the night while the Wildcats only connected on just three of 14 three-point attempts on the night. Malik Maitland was the only double figure scorer for the Wildcats as he ended with 13 points on the night while going 6-9 from the floor. St Mary’s will certainly like to get back to winning basketball and will need to show and prove versus a New Mexico team that should be looking to get back onto the court after a devastating loss vs New Mexico State in their last contest.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Saint Mary’s will certainly like to keep their present momentum as they will put in the work towards winning their third straight game while New Mexico will certainly like to come out of a mini funk after a potentially devastating loss to New Mexico State. With that being the case, look for both teams to come out focused on getting a much-needed win in this contest while New Mexico will look to shore up defensive vulnerabilities as they are currently allowing teams to  score 88 points in their last two games, overall.  Also, they will also look to  rev up their offensive attack that was invisible in their last outing versus the Aggies. On the other hand, the Gaels will seek to continue their offensive onslaught on their opponents while also allowing their defense to establish themselves early and often versus the dangerous New Mexico attack.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:   Saint Mary's Gaels

My reason for the pick :

I will back St Mary’s in this contest as they will be going up against a New Mexico team that has a tendency to allow too many points to their opponents on a nightly basis. And while their offense can certainly put some points on the board, St Mary’s defense is also solid in its own right and will establish itself early and throughout the game. With that being the case, Saint Mary’s will control the pace of this game throughout en route to a victory. Of course, New Mexico will certainly play much better than they played their last outing, however, their efforts will not result in a win in this contest as St Mary’s will indeed cruise.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

With the points that New Mexico has been giving up recently, along with the way that the Lobos have played on the offensive end, the over is indeed the strong play in this matchup. Combine this with the fact that the over has been the play in the last 4 games for St Marys while also being the result in the last seven games, overall, for New Mexico, one will conclude that this will certainly be a high-scoring matchup to where the score will lean more toward the home team in the end.
