Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Pittsburgh Panthers vs West Virginia Mountaineers
The West Virginia Mountaineers return home to WVU Coliseum after a neutral site matchup and they will welcome in the Pittsburgh Panthers, the opening tipoff is slated for 12:00 PM. The Mountaineers have not gotten off on the right foot while the Panthers are looking to continue improving under 1st-year coach Jeff Capel.
Pittsburgh Panthers 's Latest Performance :
The Pittsburgh Panthers look improved in year 1 of the Jeff Capel era as they have already won 7 games which is 1 win short of their season total last year. The Panthers have been competitive as they pushed the top 25 Iowa Hawkeyes to the buzzer but they suffered their most embarrassing loss of the Capel era as they dropped a home game to Niagra as a double-digit favorite. Freshmen guard Xavier Johnson has continued to impress and this game was another example of that as he scored a team-high 19 points which is slightly above his season average of 16.3 PPG. The production didn’t only stop at Johnson but Trey McGowens scored 12 points and Au’Diese Toney contributed 12 points and 9 rebounds, both of who are freshmen. Au’Diese Toney is a guard but the freshmen is averaging just short of a double-double as he is averaging 9.6 PPG and 6.9 RPG. Senior guard Jared Wilson-Frame didn’t reach his season average of 13.4 PPG but he contributed 8 points and 6 assist in an all-around solid game.
West Virginia Mountaineers's Latest Performance :
West Virginia has scored at will this season as they are one of the top scoring teams in the nation but the powerful Mountaineer offense was shut down last game against the Florida Gators as they were only able to score 56 points. Senior Esa Ahmad has been the leading scorer for Bob Huggins and company in the early going but he was only able to score 7 points and grab 9 rebounds in 32 minutes of playing time. Ahmad is the lone Mountaineer to reach 15 PPG this season as the forward is averaging 15.4 PPG and 5.9 RPG. One of the top returning players for the Mountaineers is junior forward Sagaba Konate but he was extremely limited against the Gators as he was only able to score 4 points and grab 6 rebounds. Konate is more known for his defense but the big man is putting together a nice year in the stat department as he is averaging 13.3 PPG and 7.9 RPG. The only Mountaineer to reach double-digits in points was guard Chase Harler as the junior scored 11 points which is above his season average of 7.4 PPG.

Against The Spread Selection: West Virginia Mountaineers*
My reason for the pick :
Bob Huggins is a future hall of fame coach and given the talent on his team this year I expect him to light a fire under his players and get back on the right track. This just has the writing on the wall to be a breakout game for the Mountaineers as they are coming off a bad loss and are returning home with a sense of urgency to get going. Pittsburgh has been impressive on defense this season which will be needed against a good West Virginia offense but the difference is Pittsburgh is still a really young team while the Mountaineers are experienced. Take the Mountaineers to roll at home in this outing.
