Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Cal State Northridge Matadors vs San Diego State Aztecs

The Cal State Northridge Matadors will travel to Viejas Arena in San Diego, California, to battle the San Diego Aztecs on New Year’s Day at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Aztecs was certainly looking as if they had erected themselves from a two-game losing streak as they picked up two straight victories to where they scored 90 or more points in each outing. Nonetheless, they took a severe step back at home in their last outing as they were defeated by the Brown Bears as the visitors posted 50 points in the first half alone and, despite being outscored 39 – 32 in the second half, were able to come out with a 20-point victory over the Aztecs.

On the other hand, Cal State Northridge comes into this game winners of three straight as they picked up a win over the Morgan State Bears at home in their last time out as they shot 51% on the night while holding the Bears to only 40% shooting during the contest as Terrell Gomez led the team with 29 points on 11 – 19 shooting from the floor.

Cal State Northridge Matadors's Latest Performance :

The Matadors of Cal Northridge have allowed at least 79 points in each of their last six games. In fact, for the season, Cal Northridge is allowing opponents to score 83 points per game on 46% shooting. Nonetheless, the Matadors put in a much better defensive effort versus the Morgan State Bears in their last time out as they allowed the Bears to shoot only 40% from the floor, yet they were able to connect on 50% of their 3-point attempts ( 6 of 12).  Sherwyn Devonish-Prince Jr. along with Stanley Davis were the only two double-digit scorers for Morgan State with 25 and 22 points.

On the other hand, the offense for the Matadors heated up early and often in this matchup as the team scored 46 points in the first half alone while shooting 51% on the night as a team. As stated, Gomez pumped in 29 points for Cal Northridge while Lamine Diane also contributed 16 points along with 14 rebounds and five assists in the much-needed victory.

The win for Cal Northridge not only  was their third straight victory, but, it marked the third time in as many games that the Matadors went over the 80-point mark for a contest, a huge improvement when considering that in their three games prior to their current winning streak, the Matadors were averaging just 68 points per. They certainly look to continue their momentum vs. a team in the Aztecs that may be a bit vulnerable after a deflating loss to the Bears.

San Diego State Aztecs's Latest Performance :

It has been extremely difficult to attempt to try to figure out this San Diego State Aztecs team in 2018. On the one hand, they currently stand in fourth place within the Mountain West Conference and are losers of three of their last five games, overall. During this time, the offense for San Diego State, which has struggled throughout the year, has put up an average of 75 points per game. Nonetheless, in three of these outings, the Aztecs put up at least 80 points which resulted in two wins for San Diego State. Their only lost, an 89-83 lost to the California Bears,  provided the foundation as to the current losing skid that the Aztecs currently find themselves in.

Of course, the Aztecs seemed to be coming out of their funk with two straight wins to where they scored 90 or more points; However, San Diego State crashed back to earth in their last outing at home versus the Brown Bears as the visitors put up 50 points in a red-hot first half while shooting well over 50% both from the field as well as from three-point range throughout the contest. Desmond Cambridge lead Brown in scoring with 25 points as he went 7 – 11 from 3-point range as the Bears racked up 24 assists on the night while capitalizing off 14 turnovers as well from San Diego State.

The Aztecs could only manage 35% shooting on the night while connecting on just 5 of 17 3-point attempts as Jalen McDaniels along with Jeremy Hemsley were the only two double-digit scorers with 19 and 11 points, respectively, for the Aztecs. Nonetheless, the Aztecs will certainly be looking to put in a much better defensive effort vs. a high scoring team in the Matadors. On the other hand, they may certainly come out of their offensive funk as well as the Matadors are ranked as one of the worst in the nation as it relates to defense.

How Cal State Northridge Matadors & San Diego State Aztecs Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Cal State Northridge is 7 – 4 – 1 ATS while the OU is  3 – 8

San Diego State is 5 – 6 ATS while the OU is  3 – 7

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will certainly be a huge test for both teams as Northridge would certainly like to go into Viejas Arena and get a much-needed, resume building victory over the San Diego Aztecs on New Year’s night. On the other hand, San Diego State continues to be in the race for the Mountain West Crown and will like to string together some much-needed victories after being a bit lackluster in their last five outings, as pointing out.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: San Diego Aztecs

My reason for the pick :

Look for the Aztecs to get back to business, particularly on the defensive end of the floor where they have allowed opponents to score 80 points in their last two games overall, to neutralize an offense for the Matadors that has not only heated up during their last three outings, but, are shooting 48% on the year as well as averaging a tad over 80 points, as well. In all, one should really expect the Aztecs to ride the strength of their defense in this matchup while allowing this to create easy buckets in transition en route to a much-needed victory.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

As stated, look for the Aztecs to play much better defense in this contest versus the Matadors of Cal State Fullerton, which is why I must back the under in this contest.  Again, I see San Diego State having a solid night on the offensive end as well versus a Matadors team that simply cannot play any type of consistent defense for long periods of time. In other words, I will back the under in that the score will swell in favor of the Aztecs at some point while they will totally shut down an offense for the Matadors that have certainly benefited against less-than-average competition lately.

Betting trends for Cal State Northridge Matadors:

Betting trends for San Diego State Aztecs:
