Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Marquette Golden Eagles vs St John's Red Storm

The 20th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles will travel to Carnesecca Arena in Queens, New York, to battle the St. John Red Storm on New Year’s  night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Golden Eagles won their eighth straight game by picking up a victory over the Southern Jaguars in their last time out as they scored at least 80 points in each of their last three outings, overall, as they posted 48 points in a hot shooting first half en route to a blowout victory.

On the other hand, the Red Storm of St John’s halted an extended losing streak of their own  in heartbreaking fashion as they fell at the hands of the Pirates of Seton Hall due to a last-second three-point shot which gave the victory to the visitors.

Marquette Golden Eagles's Latest Performance :

On the other hand, Marquette continues to roll along as they extended their current winning streak in their last outing versus the Southern Jaguars as they posted 48 points in a hot shooting first half while ending the game at 45% from the field as well as 43% from three-point range.  On the other hand, they held the Jaguars to only 12% shooting from three-point range along with 26% shooting from the floor. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 26 points as he went 9-10 from the floor while Sam Hauser was the only other double-digit scorer for Marquette with 10 points.

In all, Marquette dominate this game from start to finish as they outrebounded Southern by a 49-22 margin while also capitalizing of 16 turnovers throughout the contest en route to the victory. Marquette notw stands in the number three spot within the Big East Division and will certainly look to extend the misery for St John’s team in this contest as they have allowed opponents to score just 71 points or less in five of their last six outings, altogether. On the other hand, the offense is averaging 89 points during this time.

St John's Red Storm's Latest Performance :

St John’s extended winning streak ended in buzzer-beating fashion as the Seton Hall Pirates pulled out an exciting victory over the Red Storm in their last outing due to a buzzer-beating 3-point jumper by Shavar Reynolds. The interesting thing is that the Red Storm possessed a nine-point lead at the half to which they relinquished after scoring only 29 points in the second half alone as they end of the game shooting a dismal 43% while connecting on only 9 of 25 3-point attempts.

Mustapha Heron led the team with 19 points while Marvin Clark II  along with Justin Simon contributed 16 points apiece in the loss for st. Johns. On the other hand, leading scorer Shamorie Ponds struggled on the night in going 2-13 from the floor while ending the game with 8 points, six rebounds, along with seven assists. Myles Powell, on the other hand, led Seton Hall in scoring with 15 points as he struggled as well in going 5 – 15 on a night where the Pirates shot slightly worse at 42% while making good on just four of 18 3-point attempts.

And while Ponds continue to lead the team with 19 points per game, his average has regressed lately, particularly in his last four outings, as he is now averaging around 12 points per outing. Fortunately, Ponds is currently dishing out nine assists per game during this time.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be a very exciting game as St. Johns will be looking to get back into the win column after a disappointing loss versus the top-seeded team in the Big East, the Seton Hall Pirates. As stated, Marquette is currently in third place within the Big East conference and will certainly be  needing to pick up a huge victory vs a St John’s team that may indeed be a bit vulnerable after their last loss. Nonetheless, one should really expect an exciting and fast paced contest among the two teams that will be desperate in which to either continue their stellar streak of play, or, get back into the win column after a less-than-stellar outing.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick;   Marquette Golden Eagles

My reason for the pick :

I happen to think that St. John’s will once again struggle in this matchup vs Marquette in that the Golden Eagles have a perfect mix of consistent offense along with solid defense which  will certainly neutralize an offense for St Johns that is coming off a lackluster outing on the offensive end. Again, one should certainly expect a competitive match up amongst these two big east teams, however, Marquette will indeed hit some big shots down the stretch while also putting in a stellar defensive effort late in the game in which to pull out the much-needed victory in addition to extending their winning streak in the meantime.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

I   will back the over in this contest in that it has not only been the play in the majority of games recently for the Golden Eagles of Marquette, but, has also been the play in three of the last five home games for the Red Storm of St John’s as well. With that being the case, look for the over to indeed be the play in that both these teams are averaging at or around 48% shooting on a nightly basis while also boasting  an eighty-plus point average. Also, I would say that Marquette boasts a bit better defense at this point in the season, the offenses will simply be too much to contain throughout this contest.

Betting trends for Marquette Golden Eagles:

  • The Golden Eagles are 6-1 ATS  in last 7 games

  • The over is 5-1 in Golden Eagles last six games

Betting trends for St John's Red Storm:

  • The Red Storm are 4-1 ATS  in last 5 games

  • The under is 3 – 1 in Red Storm last four games
