Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs Virginia Tech Hokies

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will travel to Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia, to battle the 12th ranked Virginia Tech Hokies in college basketball action on New Year’s Day at 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Hokies  enter this matchup winners of six straight games as they have scored 80 or more points in five of those outings, overall. This was certainly true in their last matchup versus the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks as they put up 84 points on the night while scoring 50 points in the first half alone as they shot 57% from the floor while also making good on 14 three-point attempts for the all-important victory.

The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame also enter this game on a winning streak as they have won four straight after beating up on the Coppin State Eagles in their last time out as they were able to compensate from 14 turnovers for the Eagles while also making good on 14 of 19 attempts from the free throw line in which to sneak out a slim victory.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Latest Performance :

Despite losses to the Oklahoma Sooners along with the UCLA Bruins which consisted of an awful two-game stretch, the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame have rebounded well and which to win their next four games, overall. During this time, Notre Dame and its inconsistent offense has been up and down as they have averaged 69 points. Their defense, on the other hand, has remained consistent for the most part as they are allowing teams only shoot at a 40% clip on a nightly basis.

In their last outing versus the Coppin State Eagles, the Irish only allowed 36% shooting to Coppin State on the night, yet the Eagles were able to outrebound the Fighting Irish by a 47-33 margin for the contest. Temple Gibbs led the Irish in scoring with 15 points, however, went 4-15 from the floor on the night while John Mooney also had a rough shooting night as he went 4 – 14 from the floor while ending with 14 points along with pulling down eight rebounds as Notre Dame only shot 33% from the floor, yet were certainly helped by the fact that they were able to get to the free-throw line almost three times as much as the Eagles for the contest.

In all, Notre Dame certainly did not play their best contest of the year vs Coppin State, however, this has been the mantra for this team all Season as their offense continues to struggle while their defense remains the tip of the spear in allowing this team to remain competitive. Nonetheless, Notre Dame will look to pick up a huge, resume building win over the Virginia Tech Hokies in this contest as they have played well versus top competition this year as their losses to UCLA and Oklahoma early in the season was by five points or less.

Virginia Tech Hokies 's Latest Performance :

The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks were no competition for the Virginia Tech Hokies as the 20th ranked team in the nation was able to connect on 14 of 26 3-point attempts in their last outing while also shooting 66% as a team from the floor as Ahmed Hill led the team with 20 points along with four assist on 7-10 shooting while Kerry Blackshear jr. had 15 points along with six rebounds in the blowout victory for Virginia Tech.

Defensively, the Hokies allowed only 13 shots from the field on the night while the Hawks made good on only 6 of 24 attempts from three-point range. Finally, Virginia Tech was able to outrebound the Hawks by a margin of 34 – 17 for the game. In all, each of the Hokies last six games were double digit wins as Virginia Tech has scored at least 80 points in all but one of these matchups, as stated. They certainly look to continue their success on the offensive end versus a Notre Dame squad whose defense ranks high within the nation in overall defensive efficiency.

How Notre Dame Fighting Irish & Virginia Tech Hokies Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

Notre Dame is 6-7 ATS while the OU is  6 – 7

Virginia Tech is 8 – 3 ATS while the OU is  3 – 7

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will be an interesting matchup as the Fighting Irish will be looking to pull off a huge victory versus a Virginia Tech team that is on a roll at this point in the season. On the other hand, Virginia Tech will be looking to maintain their current standing within the top 25 while also continuing to get better as the season progresses. With that being said, I expect both teams to push the pace in this matchup as they will both be looking to find some headway versus two defenses that has been very solid throughout the season.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Virginia Tech Hokies

My reason for the pick :

Notre Dame’s only true road game in their last 10 games was a loss to the UCLA Bruins. With that being the case, they will now take to the road to battle a Virginia Tech team that not only ranks sixth in the nation in field goal percentage at 51%, but, shoots 44% from three-point range as well, good for fourth in  the country. With that being the case, look for the Fighting Irish to encounter issues early and often throughout this game as Virginia Tech will simply be too much for an Irish team that will not be able to keep up in the end due to their lack of consistency on offense.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this matchup as I happen to believe that the Hokies will have a solid night on the defensive end versus an Irish squad that continues to have issues on the offensive side of the ball. On the other hand, look for the defense for the Irish to step up even more in this matchup as they will certainly want to keep the game competitive throughout. Nonetheless, Virginia Tech will indeed pull away  at some point during this contest yet the total will certainly remain under its set limit as Notre Dame will do its best in which to limit offensive opportunities throughout.

Betting trends for Notre Dame Fighting Irish:

  • The Fighting Irish are 3-4 ATS  in last 7 games

  • The over is 5-3 in Fighting Irish last eight games

Betting trends for Virginia Tech Hokies :

  • The Hokies are 4-2 ATS  and that’s six games

  • The under is 5-1-1 in Hokies last 7 games
