Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs West Virginia Mountaineers

The 13th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders will travel to WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia, to battle the West Virginia Mountaineers on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.  The Mountaineers have rebounded from losing two of three games to winning their last two outings, with their last being over the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University as they were horrible on the offensive end, yet again, while their defense allowed the visitors to shoot 43% on the night. Furthermore, the Mountaineers ability to rebound the ball along with get to the free-throw line proved to be the catalyst in getting the much-needed victory for a Mountaineers team that has indeed struggled on  the offensive end all season.

On the other hand, the Red Raiders come into this matchup atoning for a loss against the Duke Blue Devils in their prior outing by beating up on the Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in their last matchup as they were able to pull away in the second half due to 53% shooting from the floor along with 19 points from Jarrett Culver to pace the team in the victory.

Texas Tech Red Raiders's Latest Performance :

Texas Tech certainly had a rough go of it throughout the first half versus the Vaqueros in their last matchup as they went up by only seven points at the half while allowing 31 points, total, to Texas Rio Grande Valley. Nonetheless, in the second half, Texas Tech was able to outscore the visitors by 33-15 margin while picking up the blowout victory due to shooting 54% from the floor as a team while also allowing just 32% shooting for the visitors in the contest.

Jarrett Culver led the team with 19 points as he went 8-13 from the floor to lead the team. On the other hand, Deshawn Corprew along with Tariq Owens chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively, as Texas Tech possessed only three double-digit scores. The Red Raiders were also able to capitalize off 16 turnovers for the Vaqueros, however, turned the ball over 14 times of their own. Nonetheless, the Red Raiders owned the boards as they finished the contest with a 32-20 margin on the Vaqueros.

In all, Texas Tech remains a very efficient team on the offensive end as they are shooting a tad under 50% from the floor on a nightly basis. On the other hand, their defense continues to dominate their opponents as they are allowing just 32% shooting from the floor in 2018 while opponents are averaging only 52 points per game.

West Virginia Mountaineers's Latest Performance :

After allowing 83 points to  Rhode Island in a 13-point laws, the West Virginia Mountaineers have stiffened it up, once again, on the defensive end of the floor as they have allowed opponents to score an average of 70 points in their last two games, overall. In their last outing versus the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh, West Virginia allowed them to shoot 43% from the floor as well as connect on nine three pointers for the game. However, the problem in this matchup, as well as throughout the season for that matter, for the Mountaineers was their offense as they shot 41% from the floor while making good on 10 of 29 three-pointers on the night as Isa Ahmad ended with 29 points along with nine rebounds as he went 7-16 from the floor. On the other hand, James Bolden came off the bench in which to lead the team with 22 points as he went 4-8 from three-point range on the night to provide a huge lift to the Mountaineers in the victory.

Furthermore, the Mountaineers were able to dominate on the boards as they were able to outrebound the Mountain Hawks by a margin of 50-24 for the game. In all, the Mountaineers would certainly like to carry some momentum into this matchup versus the Texas Tech Red Raiders as they will certainly be going up against a confident team that has won nine of the last 10 games, overall, while picking up their seventh blowout win of 15 or more points in their last outing versus the Vaqueros of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This game will certainly be a huge test for the Mountaineers of West Virginia as they have won their last six home games and will certainly be looking to capitalize off an opportunity to battle a Texas Tech Red Raiders squad that has slowly been gaining a bit of recognition lately due to their winning ways. With that being said, West Virginia’s offense must be able to perform much better versus a Red Raiders defense that is ranked as one of the best in the nation. On the other hand,  the offense for Texas Tech will likely find their fair share of issues as well against a West Virginia team that is only allowing opponents to shoot 41% from the floor on a nightly basis in 2018.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  West Virginia Mountaineers

My reason for the pick :

I will back the Mountaineers in this matchup as they have played outstanding at home this year as these trends will certainly continue versus a Texas Tech team that continues to have trouble scoring on the offensive end, yet, possesses one of the best defenses in the nation. Expect West Virginia to battle for 40 minutes in this matchup while also hitting some critical baskets down the stretch in which to pick up the much-needed victory at home in what will be a low-scoring affair throughout.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this matchup as I happen to believe that both offenses will have trouble scoring versus two defenses that are high in a rank within the nation as it relates to overall defensive efficiency. In all, one must expect for the Mountaineers to show up for this game  at home as they have a golden opportunity in which to pick up a confidence-building win over a Big 12 opponent.  Expect for them to lead with their defensive effort as this ultimately will lead to offenses opportunities.  On the other hand, this will certainly be an under contest as both defenses will take center stage throughout.

  • The over is 6 – 3 in Mountaineers last nine games
