Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Texas Longhorns vs Oklahoma State Cowboys

The Texas Longhorns will visit Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma, to battle the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Cowboys have been horrible lately as they are losers of four of their last six, overall, as they suffered yet another lost to the Oklahoma Sooners on the road in their last outing as they held the Sooners to less than 40% shooting from the floor.  On the other hand, the Sooners  were able to get to the free-throw line 36 times while making good on 70% of these attempts en route to the much-needed victory, thus sending the Oklahoma State Cowboys to their second straight loss.

On the other hand, the Texas Longhorns have won three straight games as they picked up a win at home over the West Virginia Mountaineers in their last outing as they were clicking on both sides of the floor in allowing West Virginia only 40% shooting from the field while they shot 50% from the floor during the contest as Matt Coleman finished with 17 points to lead the Longhorns while Dylan Osetkowski also chipped in 14 points along with pulling down seven rebounds for a Texas team that has  not allowed 56 points or more in their last three games.

Texas Longhorns 's Latest Performance :

Much like the Oklahoma State Cowboys, the Texas Longhorns are averaging 73 points per game on 43% shooting from the floor on a nightly basis. Nonetheless, versus a defensive-minded West Virginia squad in their last time out, the Longhorns were able to shoot 50% from the floor while holding West Virginia to just 40% from the field as  Derek Culver along with James Bolden led the team with 17 and 13 points while Culver pulled down nine rebounds in defeat for the Mountaineers. On the other hand, the Longhorns possessed three double-digit scorers for the game as Matt Coleman III chipped in 17 points in the game while Dylan Osetkowski ended with 14 points along with seven boards, as stated, for Texas in the win.

In other words, Texas  has managed to pick up wins simply by playing outstanding defense for 40 minutes while taking advantage of offensive opportunities at critical moments in games. Of course, this has certainly boded well for the team lately as Texas has recovered well from a three-game losing streak by winning five of their last six games, overall. They will certainly like to continue their momentum versus an Oklahoma State Cowboys team that will certainly be looking to the challenge of defending  an offense for Texas that ranks at or near the bottom in every offensive category in the nation.

Oklahoma State Cowboys's Latest Performance :

As alluded to, Oklahoma State has been dismal of the offensive end lately as well as throughout the year as they have only reached the 70 point plateau in only one of their last six games, overall. They failed to accomplish this feat in their last outing versus the Oklahoma Sooners as they shot a terrible 34% from the floor while connecting on only six of 26 attempts from long-range as Thomas Dziagwa along with Michael Weathers were the only two double-digit scores for the Cowboys with 16 and 13 points, respectively, as the former went 4-8 from three-point range in the loss.

On the other hand, the defense for Oklahoma State has been solid throughout the season in allowing just 40% shooting for opponents on a nightly basis. This was certainly the case in the last matchup  versus a high-scoring Sooners squad as they limited the team to 36% shooting while nailing 7 of 28 attempts from long-range as Kristian Doolittle along with Brady Manek led the team with 16 and 15 points while also combining for 13 rebounds for Oklahoma. Finally, the Cowboys were outrebounded by a 42-28 margin in this game, however, were not able to take advantage of 12 turnovers for Oklahoma in the matchup en route to their 3rd straight road loss.

Nonetheless, Oklahoma state will look to get back on track at home, where they are winners of two of their last three games, overall, vs a Texas team that, despite coming into this game with tons of momentum, has had to deal with offensive inconsistency as well both lately and throughout the season.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be an interesting game from start to finish as both teams will certainly be looking for an all-important Big 12 victory on Tuesday night. On one hand,  since both offenses have played horribly lately, look for both to push the pace in this matchup in which to catch the opposing defense on its heels. Nonetheless, look for the defenses to take center stage in this contest as each team has had to rely on their defensive units in which to keep them competitive in 2018. I see these trends continuing in this matchup as well as one will certainly witness a highly competitive matchup.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Texas Longhorns

My reason for the pick :

The Longhorns simply come in with much more momentum at this point in the season and will pick up a slim victory in this matchup over the Oklahoma  State Cowboys. Of course, the Cowboys will certainly make a game of this throughout as they will rely on their defense, as stated, in which the limit offensive opportunities vs for an inconsistent Texas offense. Nonetheless, when all is said and done, the Longhorns will hit critical buckets within the game in which to seal a hard-fought victory over the Cowboys.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With two awful offenses going against two defenses that are above average in  allowing teams to connect on 40% of their shots, or fewer, in 2018, one has to conclude that the under is indeed the strong play in this contest on Tuesday night. Of course, I expect Texas to hit the big shots coming down the stretch, however, one should look for this game to be a low-scoring affair to where the defenses will be the tip of the spear in allowing this game to remain competitive yet low scoring throughout.

Betting trends for Texas Longhorns :

  • The Longhorns are 4-2 against the spread in last 6 games

  • The under is 6 – 3 in Longhorns last nine games

Betting trends for Oklahoma State Cowboys:

  • The Cowboys are 0-8 against the spread in last 8 games

  • The under is 6-1 in Cowboys last seven games
