Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Ohio State Buckeyes vs Rutgers Scarlet Knights
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights return home to the Rutgers Athletic Center for their 4th consecutive home game where they will welcome in the Ohio State Buckeyes in a Big Ten clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. Ohio State looks like a contender in the Big Ten as they currently rank inside the top 25 while Rutgers is still rebuilding a program that was in shambles a few years back which has led to some unpleasant results.
Ohio State Buckeyes's Latest Performance :
The Ohio State Buckeyes have continued their development under Chris Holtmann and they once again look like a threat to the Big Ten as well as in the NCAA Tournament as they currently rank inside the top 25 and have picked up some key wins. The Buckeyes had a tough draw for their Big Ten opener as they had to play host to one of the top teams in the nation in the Michigan State Spartans which proved in the final box score as they lost 86-77. One of the top players for the Buckeyes this season has been sophomore forward Kaleb Wesson and he was able to make his impact felt against the Spartans as he dropped a team-high 25 points while also grabbing 8 rebounds. Wesson enters this matchup as the top Buckeyes in the scoring department (17.1 PPG) as well as in the rebound area (6.9 RPG). Senior guard C.J. Jackson was able to positively impact the game as he dropped 10 points as well as dished out 5 assists and record 5 rebounds, Jackson has been the go-to guard this season as he averages 13.4 PPG. The freshmen were able to have a hand in the Michigan State game as Luther Muhammad has continued his good season while Duane Washington has been a spark off the bench. Muhammad was able to record 12 points while Washington dropped 10 points as well as grabbed 4 rebounds.
Rutgers Scarlet Knights's Latest Performance :
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are in the middle of rebuilding their basketball program as they have won no more than 6 conference games since 2005-2006 as well as not have made the NCAA Tournament since the 1990-1991 season. Rutgers showed the nation how far off they are from being relevant in the Big Ten in their conference opener as they lost to the Maryland Terrapins 77-63. One of the positives for the Scarlet Knights has been the development of junior forward Eugene Omoruyi and we saw his skill set on display against Maryland with a team-high 12 points. Omoruyi has clearly been the best player for Steve Pikiell and company this season as he enters this matchup averaging 15.7 PPG and 8 RPG. Sophomore guard Geo Baker has been the best guard for the Scarlet Knights as he is the only other player averaging double-figures (13.1 PPG) but he was unable to impact the game against Maryland as he only dropped 3 points and dished out 2 assists in the loss. Baker wasn’t the only scorer for Rutgers who failed to find their footing in this game as sophomore Peter Kiss only dropped 3 points as well which is below his 8.5 PPG mark. The freshmen class was able to show Rutgers what is to come as Montez Mathis dropped 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while Ron Harper dropped 10 points off the bench.

Against The Spread Selection: Ohio State Buckeyes
My reason for the pick :
Ohio State should come into this game inspired as they want to prove that they can compete with the Michigan schools in the Big Ten while Rutgers will still be trying to piece together what happened against Maryland. Sure Rutgers has a solid big man but Kaleb Wesson is one of the best in the confernece and should cause havoc on Omoruyi, but the key will be to keep Wesson out of foul trouble. The young backcourt of Rutgers will not be able to bottle up Jackson and the dynamic freshmen duo of Washington and Muhammad. Muhammad is averaging 9.5 PPG but we should expect him to go over that average in this game as he will be playing back in his home state in front of his family. Ohio State will ramp up the pressure on the defensive end of the court and cause the 296th scoring offense to struggle. Take Ohio State.
