Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs Syracuse Orange
The Syracuse Orange are set to return back to the Carrier Dome for their 2nd consecutive home game where they will take on the Georiga Tech Yello Jackets in an ACC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 6:00 PM. Syracuse is once again one of the top defensive teams in the nation and they will be looking to make some noise in the ACC come March while Georiga Tech is still rebuilding their program from the ground up.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets's Latest Performance :
The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have been the laughing stock of the ACC ever since their NCAA Tournament appearance back during the 2009-2010 season but Josh Pastner has finally started to build this program up and it has been on notice by the conference. The Yellow Jackets are nowhere near competing for a top spot in the ACC but they almost played spoiler in their latest game against the 9th ranked Virginia Tech Hokies as they lost 52-49. Sophomore guard Jose Alvarez has been the top player all season long for Pastner and company and we saw him put together a solid outing against VTech with 20 points and 4 assists. Alvarez was one of their top options last year before he went down with an injury and he has taken off just where he left off as he averages a team-high 13.6 PPG. Alvarez having a big outing comes to the surprise of no Yellow Jacket fan but the production from senior forward Abdoulaye Gueye does. Gueye is coming off the bench for Georgia Tech where he only averages 5.2 PPG and 3.7 RPG but he was able to eclipse that mark against Virginia Tech with 11 points and 6 rebounds. To spread out his scoring Pastner has elected to move the 2nd leading scorer in Brandon Alston (10.2 PPG) to the bench which has been both good and bad this season, Alston was unable to reach the 10-point mark against the Hokies though as he recorded 7 points.
Syracuse Orange's Latest Performance :
The Syracuse Orange will be seeking their 2nd consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this year and they have the talent and defense to once again make some noise in the Big Dance as they did last year. The Orange have been able to start ACC play 2-0 with their latest win coming over the Clemson Tigers at home 61-53. Leading the way for Syracuse was junior forward Elijah Hughes as he was able to drop 14 points and record 7 rebounds in the win, Hughes has been one of the top players for the Orange all season long as he enters this game averaging 15.2 PPG and 4.9 RPG. Syracuse has been led by junior guard Tyus Battle all season long as the New Jersey native averages a team-high 17.5 PPG, Battle was able to record 12 points against Clemson. Sophomore forward Oshae Brissett has continued to grow for Jim Boeheim and he has put together a nice season as he averages 13.9 PPG and 8.3 RPG, Brissett had 9 points and 6 rebounds in their latest outing. The Orange would like to see more production of senior guard Frank Howard as his PPG has dropped from 14.4 a year ago to 6.5, Howard was able to find his stroke against the Orange with 12 points and 5 rebounds. The bench play has been weak for Syracuse and will be the reason they are one and done in March and we saw that in their latest outing as they only had 4 points from that unit.

Against The Spread Selection: Syracuse Orange
My reason for the pick :
Both teams have a similar identity as they like have top defenses and below-average offenses but the advantage is with the Orange who are very good at home and have slightly better athletes. The battle of Battle and Alverado should be a fun one as they are two guards who like to score but play even better defense which could open the floodgates for the other guys with one of them being senior guard Frank Howard. Howard has not taken off as we expected him to this season but we saw him get 12 points in their latest outing against Clemson which leaves me to believe he is starting to gain his confidence back. Syracuse has been running the zone for years now and should know how to attack the Georgia Tech zone, Oshae Brissett will sit in the middle and feast on drives or mid-range jumpers. Take the Orange at home.
