Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Umass Minutemen vs Dayton Flyers

The UMass Minutemen will travel to University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio, to face the Dayton Flyers on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time for an Atlantic 10 Showdown. Dayton is on a roll at this point in the season in picking up five straight wins as they outlasted the Colonials of George Washington in their last outing as they recuperated from a 10-point halftime deficit in which to outscore the home team by 16 points in the second half while also picking up the conference victory.

And while the Dayton Flyers reside within the fourth place slot within the Atlantic 10 division, UMass finds itself within the division cellar as they are losers of three straight games after falling by three points on the road to the Billikens of St Louis in their last time out. In this contest, UMass outshot the Billikens by a 50% to 39% margin, however, St Louis was able to get to the line 30 times compared to 21 for the Minutemen.  In addition, the home team was also able to capitalize off 16 costly turnovers for the visitors in this contest in which to pick up the home victory.

Umass Minutemen's Latest Performance :

UMass’ defense did its best in which to keep the Billikens off the board in their last contest in allowing 65 points on less than 40% shooting from the floor. On the other hand, the offense for the Minutemen was simply not there, yet again, as they shot 50% from the floor yet went 4-12 from three-point range. Most importantly, UMass was not able to get any consistency on the offensive end in this matchup due to 16 turnovers throughout the game en route to dropping their fifth game in seven outings, total.

Leading scorer for the season, Luwane Pipkins, led the team with 18 points  yet went 5-16 from the floor on the night. On the other hand, Hasahn French led the Billikens in scoring with 25 points while pulling down six rebounds as the Billikens were able to keep the heat on the Davidson Wildcats for the top spot within the Atlantic 10 division. Nonetheless, the UMass Minutemen will attempt to right the ship in this matchup versus a red-hot Dayton Flyers team that has struggled a bit on the offensive end, much like the Minutemen, yet possesses a defense which allows opponents just 67 points per game on 41% shooting on a nightly basis.

Dayton Flyers's Latest Performance :

The Dayton Flyers have scored 80 or more points in three of their last five games, overall; However, in their last two games, they posted 72 points in each contest as each resulted in wins as  this was certainly enough to defeat the George Washington Colonials in their last outing as the Flyers shot 48% from the floor and connecting on 10 of 23 3-point attempts of the night as Jordan Davis led the team with 25 points while going 5-8 from long range in the contest.

On the other hand, DJ WIlliams led the Colonials with 20 points as the home team was only able to shoot 37% from the floor despite connecting on 10 of 24 attempts.  Dayton was able to get to the free-throw line 19 times compared to just eight times for George Washington during this contest while each team turned the ball over frequently as 16 was credited to the Colonials while the Dayton Flyers committed 15 of their own. In all the Flyers certainly did not play their best game versus the Colonials, they will take the win and move on in which to face a struggling UMass team that has certainly lost their way on the offensive end lately as they have only been able to average 64 points during their current losing streak. Furthermore, the Minutemen are winless in their last three road games, overall.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will certainly be an interesting game as the UMass Minutemen will be attempting to halt a potentially damaging 3 game losing streak at a critical point in the season. On the other hand, the Dayton Flyers will be looking to extend their outstanding play at home, where they are winners of five straight games, versus a team  in UMass that picked up a six point win in their last outing on February 2018.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:   Dayton Flyers

My reason for the pick :

Look for Dayton to keep winning in this contest versus a UMass team that has not only been terrible lately, but has been just as awful on the road as well. Pipkins continues to put up numbers for the Minutemen at this point, however, the fact remains that the rest of his squad has been cold as ice from the floor. With a defense in the Flyers that will certainly be looking to establish themselves on the defensive end, first and foremost, in this matchup on Sunday afternoon, one can certainly expect that the home team will pull away at some point in which to pick up a slim victory over a reeling UMass squad.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

While the over has been the play in the majority  of recent games for both these teams, I will back the under in this contest due to the fact that both offenses are struggling at this point in the season. Combine this with the fact that both squads will be looking to lead with their defense early in this contest in which to set the tone, one can certainly expect for the under to be the strong play in this matchup as well as I happened to see a low-scoring yet competitive contest throughout.

Betting trends for Umass Minutemen:

  • The Minutemen are 3-5 against the spread in last 8 games

  • The over is 6 – 4 in Minutemen last 10 games

Betting trends for Dayton Flyers:

  • The Flyers are 1-5 against the spread in their last six games

  • The over it 7-1 in Flyers last eight games
