Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Villanova Wildcats vs Creighton Blue Jays

The Villanova Wildcats will travel CHI Health Center Omaha  in Omaha, Nebraska, to battle the Creighton Bluejays for a Sunday afternoon showdown within the Big East beginning at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Creighton enters this matchup losers of two straight games as they fell to the Golden Eagles of Marquette in their last outing as they certainly got off to a fast start in scoring 45 points in the first half while going up by 6 points at the break. Nonetheless, Marquette was able to fight back in the second half while outscoring the home team in addition to picking up the win in overtime.

On the other hand, the Villanova Wildcats are winners of four straight games as they took out the current Big East bully in the Red Storm of St John’s in their last outing as the Red Storm relinquished a five-point halftime lead in the second half as the Wildcats outscored the road team 42-32 en route to a much-needed conference victory.

Villanova Wildcats 's Latest Performance :

Creighton has been horrible on both sides of the ball recently as their high scoring offense continues to put points on the board; However, the defense has been more awful than usual in allowing 95 points per game during their current two game losing streak.  Of course, they can certainly be given props for the way in which they handled themselves versus the Marquette Golden Eagles in their last outing; However, the fact remains that while their offense continues to shine, as stated, the defense continues to let them down as they have shown no signs of getting better.

I mean, Marquette shot a whopping 53% from the field in the most recent outing for the Bluejays while also connecting on 16 of 28 three point attempts on the night. Finally, the Bluejays were heavily outrebounded in this contest as well as leading scorer for the season in Ty-Shon Alexander struggled in going 7-18 for the night yet leading the team with 23 points while pulling down five rebounds.  Davion Mintz, however, went 5-8 from three point range while finishing with 21 points in the loss. On the other hand, the Golden Eagles only needed Markus Howard to get the victory as he scored a total of 53 points in going 10-14 from three point range for the contest. Nonetheless, despite the loss, Creighton continues to be winners of three of their last four home games, overall.

Creighton Blue Jays's Latest Performance :

And while their offense has certainly not impressive throughout the season, the defense for the Villanova Wildcats have certainly been the team’s saving grace in allowing oppponents to post just 66 points on only 43% shooting this year per outing.  This was certainly not the case in their last contest versus the Red Storm of St. Johns as they allowed the visitors to score 39 points in the first half while the offense labored in putting up just 34 points. Nonethtlees, the home team caught a bit of fire in the second half while pulling away late in which to seal the victory as Eric Paschall and Phil Booth led the team, once again, with 25 and 23 points, respectively, as they were each active on the boards with a combined 15 rebounds amongst themselves.

Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm in the scoring department with 23 points along with 7 assists as he went 7-17 from the floor as the Red Storm currently reside in foruth place within the Big East while Villanova continues to run the roost as they sit in the top position within the confernece.  It would be important to note that the Wildcats did not fare well in Omaha in their last outing as they were six point losers to the Bluejays in overtime in Feburary of 2018. Nonetheless, the Wildcats look to lead with their outstanding defense in which to make some headway versus a Creighton team that has been the antithesis of the Villanova defesne, as they are allowing teams to shoot 47% per outing.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will be an exciting Big East contest on Sunday as the Wildcats will be looking to hang on to their success as well as to their top seed within the conference by taking care of a Creighton team that has been hard to figure out lately.  Look for the Wildcats to push the pace, however, while continuing to rely on their defense to wear this Bluejays squad down in which to capitalize on the offensive end.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:  Villanova Wildcats

My reason for the pick :

Despite the Bluejays winning three of their last four home outings, I will back the visitors in this matchup as they are on a roll at a critical point in the season.  With that being the case, look for Villanova to limit offensive looks for this Creighton offense while also stepping things up a bit on the offensive end, with Creighton regularly leaving their defense inside the locker room, more often than not.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

With the way in which the Bluejays have played defense lately, along with the Wildcats looking to come out of an offensive funk, so to speak (80 or more points in just one of last 8 games), look for the over to be the play as the road team will push the pace in which to take advantage of an awful defense for the Bluejays throughout the duration of this Sunday contest.

Betting trends for Villanova Wildcats :

  • The Wildcats are 5-3 against the spread in last 8 games

  • The under is 3-0-1 in Wildcats last four games

Betting trends for Creighton Blue Jays:

  • The Blue Jays are 2-3 against the spread

  • The under is 4-2 in Blue Jays last six games
