Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Arizona Wildcats vs California Golden Bears

The California Golden Bears are set to return home to the Haas Pavilion where they will play host to the Arizona Wildcats in a Pac-12 clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 10:30 PM. Arizona looked sloppy during non-conference play but they have picked up their level of play and sit at a perfect 3-0 in conference play while California is still rebuilding their program and can be argued as the worst in the conference.

Arizona Wildcats's Latest Performance :

Arizona has been a basketball powerhouse ever since the 1980s and even considering this current Wildcats team has not yet cracked the top 25 they should be able to crack through and make the NCAA Tournament. Arizona may be the best team in the Pac-12 and they have played well in the early going of the 2018-2019 conference slate as they are in 1st place with a 3-0 record. The Wildcats enter this matchup fresh off a win against the Stanford Cardinal 75-70. Arizona was able to flex their scoring depth in this matchup as they had 5 different guys reach at least 10+ PPG. The leading scorer in this game was no other than sophomore guard Brandon Randolph as he fell just shy of a double-double with 17 points and 8 rebounds. The Wildcats lost some major production from their 2017-2018 team but Randolph has been stellar in the lead role as he averages 16.6 PPG. One of Sean Miller’s top recruits from 2015 in senior forward Chase Jeter has been a threat this season as he averages 12.8 PPG and 7.3 RPG but even after dropping 10 points against the Cardinal he still flirted with foul trouble. Sophomore forward Ira Smith came off the bench and filled in nicely for Jeter as he recorded 12 points and 4 rebounds. Senior forward Ryan Luther was also a valuable asset off the bench for Sean Miller as he recorded 10 points.

California Golden Bears's Latest Performance :

California was a 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament back during the 2015-2016 NCAA Tournament but that was under Cuonzo Martin but he is now with the Missouri Tigers, and the early tenure of Wyking Jones has not been as pretty as hoped for as in the 2 years he has been at Cal, they have only won 2 conference games. California sits in last place of the Pac-12 after they extended their conference record to 0-3 with a loss to the Arizona State Sun Devils 80-66. Leading the way for the Golden Bears in this matchup was freshmen guard Matt Bradley as he dropped 19 points, Bradley is one of 4 Cal players to average at least 10+ PPG as he averages 11.3. California is still without their top scorer in junior guard Paris Austin which is a big loss for this team as he averages 14.1 PPG and 5.2 APG. Sophomore guard Darius McNeill stepped up in the absence of Austin and contributed 16 points which is just above his season average of 12.7 PPG. The frontcourt is young for Jones as he starts a freshman and sophomore but they both have been upsides for this team. Sophomore Justice Sueing has been the top rebounder for the Golden Bears as he averages 6.5 RPG with 13.5 PPG while freshmen Andre Kelly averages 9.3 PPG and 5.7 RPG, Sueing contributed 7 points and 7 rebounds against the Sun Devils while Kelly recorded 6 points and 6 rebounds.

Against The Spread Selection: Arizona Wildcats

My reason for the pick :

Arizona doesn’t have a big name lottery pick that we have become accustomed to seeing the last few years but they still have top recruits who have meshed well together down the stretch and look like one of the favorites to win the conference. California has some talent on their team but they are a very young and inexperienced bench which we have seen translate into some ugly loses. Arizona has some scorers in Brandon Randolph and Brandon Williams which will lead to a long night for one of the worst defenses in college basketball as California is letting up close to 80 PPG. Arizona has been winning games this year on the back of their defense and given the Golden Bears top scorer is still out I don’t see buckets coming easy for the home team. Arizona rolls over Cal.

Betting trends for Arizona Wildcats:

  • Arizona is 12-5 ATS as a road favorite since 2016.

Betting trends for California Golden Bears:

  • California is 3-7 ATS as an underdog this season.
