Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Butler Bulldogs vs Xavier Musketeers

The Butler Bulldogs will travel to Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, to battle the Xavier Musketeers on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. eastern time. Xavier finally halted a prior losing skid by picking up a win over the Georgetown Hoyas at home in their last outing as they were able to reclaim a lead (after going down by 5 at the break) while pulling away late versus the Hoyas in outscoring them 46-37 in the second half while also obtaining 23 points along with 10 rebounds from Zach Hankins in the win.

On the other hand, the Butler Bulldogs lost a heartbreaker in their last outing, their third in four contests, to the Pirates of Seton Hall as the Bulldogs staged a huge rally in the second half to where they outscored Seton Hall 50 – 42 during this time, yet fell short of the victory due to Seton Hall shooting  51% from the floor while also getting 31 points from their leading scorer of the year, Myles Powell.

Butler Bulldogs 's Latest Performance :

And while both teams were borrible from behind the arc in this matchup in only connecting on five 3-pointers each for the contest, there was certainly a huge disparity in shooting percentage as the often struggling Seton Hall Pirates offense shot over 50% while holding the Bulldogs to just 38% shooting on the night as Kamar Baldwin went 10 of 26 from the field while going 1-8 from three-point range in leading the team with 23 points. On the other hand, Joey Brunk also chipped in 20 points along with 10 rebounds for a Butler team that possessed just two double-digit scores on the night.

As stated, Powell led the Pirates offensive charge as he poured in 31 points for the night as Seton Hall remained hot on the heels of the Villanova Wildcats for the top seed within the Big East with the win. On the other hand, Butler is not just three slots from the cellar of the division with what was their sixth loss in 10 games.

Xavier Musketeers's Latest Performance :

Xavier possessed four double-digit scores in their win over the Georgetown Hoyas as Hankins led the way with 23 points, as stated, while Terry Jones also recorded a double-double in scoring 19 points while also pulling down 10 rebounds in the much-needed victory for Xavier. Finally, leading scorer for the year in Naji Marshall, struggled on the night in going 4-13 while ending with 13 points total.  In all, Xavier ended the game shooting 47% while allowing just 43% shooting to a potentially dangerous Georgetown offense as Jessie Govan led the way with 27 points along with eight rebounds in the defeat.

The offensive output was certainly something to build upon as the Xavier offense had seemingly went cold prior to their outing versus the Hoyas. In other words, their  81 point total was the most points the Musketeers put up in their last seven games, overall. On the other hand, their defense continues to play well enough in which to keep their team competitive and will certainly look to do so versus a Butler Bulldog squad that has struggled, even more, on both sides of the ball while going winless in their last three road games, as well.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Butler will certainly be looking to turn the tide in this contest versus the Xavier Musketeers; However, one has to wonder as to the state of the Bulldogs at this point as they have lost three of the last four games, overall, as stated; Yet, are also winless in their last three road games, altogether. With that being the case, the Musketeers are winners of five of their last six home games as they  have posted at least seventy three points or more in four these contests. It is for this reason that one should certainly look for both these teams to have much incentive in which to play well in this Big East contest on Sunday afternoon, with the most important being to increase their positioning within the conference.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:   Xavier Musketeers

My reason for the pick :

I will certainly back Xavier in this contest as Butler has played a bit too inconsistent for my taste recently. And this less-than-stellar play can certainly be extended to both ends of the floor as the Bulldogs continue to let potential wins sail by due to a severe lack of consistency on the offensive end  along with a lack of cohesion on the defensive end of the floor. With that being the case, expect Xavier to take advantage of these deficiencies early and often as they will pull away from this team quite early in this matchup in which to pick up a convincing win on Sunday.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this contest as it has been the play in the majority of recent outings for the Musketeers. On the other hand, the under has also been the play in  two of the Bulldogs last three road games as I am strongly certain that it will also be the result in this contest as well, particularly when one considers the types of defenses that will be taking the floor. And while the Bulldogs defense may be stretched to the limit due to a lack of consistent offensive output, they remain a solid defense, nonetheless, that will certainly bring their focus and intensity in this contest in which to keep their team competitive. On the other hand, the Musketeers only allow opponents to shoot 43% from the floor on a nightly basis, thus signaling that the under is indeed the Logical play in this instance.

Betting trends for Butler Bulldogs :

  • The Bulldogs are 2-4 against the spread in last 6 games

  • The under is 4-2 in Bulldogs last six games

Betting trends for Xavier Musketeers:

  • The Musketeers are 4-6 against the spread in last 10 games

  • The under is 6-4 Musketeers last 10 games
