Florida State Seminoles vs Pittsburgh Panthers

The Pittsburgh Panthers return home to Petersen Events Center after playing on the road in their latest outing and they will welcome in the Florida State Seminoles in an ACC matchup, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. Florida State is one of the top teams in the nation and they showed that in their recent game against Duke while Pittsburgh is rebuilding their program under 1st-year coach Jeff Capel and have looked slightly improved.

Florida State Seminoles's Latest Performance :

It is no secret that this Florida State basketball team is a good unit as they made the Elite 8 last season but they almost pulled off the unthinkable this past weekend as they lost to the #1 ranked Duke Blue Devils at the buzzer 80-78. The Seminoles have some of the best depth in college basketball as they deploy an 11-man lineup while most teams stick to 7 or 8. Mifondu Kabengele is the leading scorer for the Seminoles despite coming off the bench as he averages 12 PPG and 5.2 RPG and he was able to continue his hot stretch of games with a double-double as the sophomore recorded 24 points and 10 rebounds. Joining Kabengele in the big game department was senior forward Phil Cofer as he was able to drop 21 points and 7 rebounds against the Blue Devils which are both season best. Cofer is still recovering from a foot injury which is why his production is down from 2017 (9.7 PPG) but he is an important piece for Leonard Hamilton and company as he brings veteran leadership to the team. Senior guard Terance Mann is an all-around player for the Seminoles as he does it all and we saw that on display against Duke as he recorded 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, Mann averages 11.6 PPG and 6.3 RPG. Florida State was huge in the block department as they were able to compile 7 blocks from their defense which allowed them to get out in transition for easy baskets.

Pittsburgh Panthers's Latest Performance :

The Pittsburgh Panthers are coming off one of their worst seasons in program history as they only won a total of 8 games none of which were in conference play but Jeff Capel has already turned the program around as they have won 11 games and already obtained their 1st conference win. the Panthers played well in their recent game on the road against the ranked NC State Wolfpack as they only lost 86-80. Freshmen guard Xavier Johnson has been the top player for Capel and company as he averages a team-high 17 PPG and 4.9 APG. Johnson was able to continue his hot hand against the Wolfpack as he recorded 25 points while shooting 8 for 12 from the field. Au’Diese Toney is another one of the freshmen guards who has had a solid season and he was able to record 17 points and 6 rebounds against the Wolfpack which are both above his season averages of 10.1 PPG and 5.9 RPG. Down low the best forward was sophomore Terrell Brown as he fell just short of a double-double with 10 points and 8 rebounds, Brown is the leading scorer as well as rebounder for the frontcourt as he averages 5.8 PPG and 4.9 RPG. Freshmen guard Trey McGowens is another one apart of the freshman backcourt but he was unable to match his 13.4 PPG as the South Carolina native recorded 7 points while pitching in 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

Against The Spread Selection: Florida State Seminoles

My reason for the pick :

Both teams had chances to pull upsets in their latest outings so the question is which team will respond to their loss better and I give the advantage to the upperclassmen of Florida State as Pittsburgh’s freshmen may harp on the loss. Florida State has a crazy amount of depth which has proven to be a problem for opposing teams as they get tired quick. Pittsburgh often deploys a 4 guard lineup which Florida State will take advantage of as they have some good forwards as well as some length with their guards. Florida State likes to play fast as they will force turnovers which will force easy baskets in transition and if they are able to rattle the Pittsburgh freshmen it will be a long game. Florida State is 1-2 in conference play but they have losses to the two best teams in the conference in Duke and Virginia so I expect them to recover against an easier opponent in this one.
