Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Marquette Golden Eagles vs Georgetown Hoyas

The 19th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles will travel to Capital One arena in Washington, DC, to battle the Georgetown Hoyas on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time in  what will be an exciting Big East battle from start to finish. The Hoyas enter this match up with a bit of momentum as they halted a two-game losing streak while picking up a win over the Providence Friars in overtime as they not only rallied in the second half in which to force the extra session, but, was also able to outscore the visitors by a 23-17 margin in overtime in which to pick up the much-needed victory.

On the other hand, the Marquette Golden Eagles continued their aggressive play on the defensive end in their last outing versus the Seton Hall Pirates as they allowed to 66 points to the Pirates, who struggle regularly on the offensive end. Nonetheless, Marquette certainly had to hang on to their lead as the second half wound down as the Pirates cut into their 10-point halftime lead during this time.  Nonetheless, despite committing 20 turnovers on the night, the Golden Eagles were able to come out with a much-needed win while also continuing to remain second with in the Big East conference behind the Villanova Wildcats.

Marquette Golden Eagles's Latest Performance :

As stated, Marquette certainly needs a much better showing in this matchup versus the Georgetown Hoyas on Tuesday night. On the one hand, the offense for Marquette has been up and down lately as they followed up a stretch of three games to where they scored 80 or more points in each contest, to average just 69 points per game in three of their last four games, overall. Nonetheless, they  were able to pick up wins in three of these four games as the defense has certainly been the tip of the spear in their success during this time.

And while Seton Hall shot slightly better than the Golden Eagles in their last matchup at 42% compared to just 40%, the Golden Eagles shot 20-24 from the free-throw line on the night as this was certainly a key stat when one considers that the Pirates only graced the free throw line a total of six times for the contest. In all, while Marquette made this game much more interesting than what it should have been in committing 20 turnovers on the night, they were also able to  force 17 turnovers from the Pirates in this contest as they allowed opponents 70 points or less in seven of their last 10 games, overall. They will certainly be looking to continue their success in this matchup versus a Georgetown Hoyas squad that is averaging 91 points in their last seven outings.

Georgetown Hoyas's Latest Performance :

Georgetown scored 90 or more points for their third game in four outings as they rallied in the second half in which to force overtime, as stated, while picking up the victory as they outscored the visitors by six points in the extra period. Jessie Govan led the team, yet again, as he pumped in 33 points while going 11-26 from the field while also posting 14 rebounds in the meantime. On the other hand, James Akinjo chipped in 20 points while also pulling down nine rebounds is the win for the Hoyas.

Govan has increased his average on the year to 20 points to lead the team in 2018, and has been on fire lately as he has scored 20 or more points in four of the last five games for Georgetown. It would also be important to note that Govan has recorded three double-doubles in three of the last five games for the Hoyas as well. Of course, the Hoyas will certainly need his offensive contributions versus a stingy Marquette defense that has, more often than not, locked down opposing offenses all year long. In fact, the Golden Eagles have allowed a 80 or more points to opponents in just three of their last 10 games, total.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This will certainly be an interesting matchup as both Marquette and Georgetown, which also sits in the fourth place slot with in the Big East, will be looking to lock horns in which to pick up a much-needed conference victory. As stated, both teams are coming off confidence-building wins as Georgetown was able to halt a losing streak while Marquette continues to roll along after their earlier lost to begin the new year versus the Red Storm of St John’s on January 1st. Nonetheless, one should certainly expect a highly competitive contest amongst these two squads as it will be interesting to see how Marquette performs versus such an offensive juggernaut in the Hoyas.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:    Marquette Golden Eagles

My reason for the pick :

While much will be on the line for both teams in this contest, I will back the Marquette Golden Eagles to come out with a slim victory of this contest as their defense will rise to the occasion, yet again, while their offense will hit some critical baskets down the stretch in which to pull out a win. As stated, Marquette has allowed 70 points or less in seven of their last 10 games. However, in their last two road games, they allowed opponents to score an average of 95 points per game as the Blue Jays of Creighton put up 104 points in their most recent road outing while they were defeated by 20 on the road versus the Red Storm of St Johns. Nonetheless, Georgetown has allowed opponents to average 88 points in their last six home games, overall, and I expect these trends to continue on this night as Marquette will march to  victory in what will be a hard-fought win.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

I will certainly back the over in this contest as Marquette, despite having one of the most effective defensive units in the country, has lost its step in its last couple road games. On the other hand, the over has been the play in the majority of games for Georgetown, primarily due to their high scoring offense along with their inability to consistently  get defensive stops. With that being the case, the over is indeed the strong play in this matchup as Marquette will come out of its shooting slump while also finding its fair share of issues early on in defending a Georgetown team that can certainly shoot the ball.

Betting trends for Marquette Golden Eagles:

  • The Golden Eagles are 7-3 against the spread in last 10 games

  • The under is 3-1-1 in Golden Eagles last 5 games

Betting trends for Georgetown Hoyas:

  • The Hoyas are 3-1-1 against the spread in last 5 games

  • The over is 7 – 1 in Hoyas last eight games
