Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Monmouth Hawks vs Siena Saints

The Siena Saints will return home to the Times Union Center after playing on the road in their latest outing and they will play host to the Monmouth Hawks in a MAAC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. Monmouth entered conference play 1-12 but they have gotten 2 wins in MAAC play to give them a glimmer of hope while Siena has not gotten off to the best start as they are 1-2 in conference play.

Monmouth Hawks's Latest Performance :

The Monmouth Hawks have had some stellar teams under King Rice as he went a combined 55-15 during the 2015-2017 seasons but yet this program has not made the NCAA Tournament since 2006 which shows the level of competition they have faced in the MAAC. The Hawks got off to a slow start this season but they have rebounded nicely with a 2-2 record in the conference with their latest win coming at home against the Manhattan Jaspers 65-49. Monmouth has shown the ability to use their depth to beat up on opposing teams as they can play anywhere from 9-10 players a game. Leading the way for Monmouth in their recent game against the Jaspers was sophomore guard Ray Salnave as he contributed 17 points, 6 assists, and 5 rebounds in the win, Salnave has been the leading scorer all season long as he averages 12.4 PPG. Joining Salnave in the starting backcourt is sophomore guard Deion Hammond and he is the only other Hawk to average at least 10+ PPG (11.7 PPG), Hammond recorded 9 points against the Jasper. Junior forward Mustapha Traore had a big game for Monmouth down low as he fell just short of a double-double with 10 points and 8 rebounds, Traore averages 6.4 PPG and 5.2 RPG. The Hawks are one of the worst offensive teams in the country as they rank 341st out of 355th in team scoring.

Siena Saints's Latest Performance :

The Siena Saints have not made the NCAA Tournament since the 2009-2010 season but they are looking forward to getting back to the postseason under 1st-year coach Jamion Christian as he had some successful season at Mount St. Mary’s. The Saints were able to pick up their 1st conference win of the season in their latest matchup as they beat the Marist Red Foxes on the road 71-66. Leading the way for Siena was no other than their senior forward Evan Fisher as he was able to record 23 points in the win, Fisher has clearly been the top player this season for Jamion Christian as he averages 17.1 PPG and 7 RPG. Fisher is joined by freshmen forward Sloan Seymour who averages 9.5 PPG and he was able to contribute 12 points against Marist which was good for the 2nd best on the team. Freshmen guard Jalen Pickett was a good pickup for Siena and he showed his all-around playmaking abilities against the Red Foxes as the New York native recorded 9 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds. Pickett was a 3-star recruit coming out of high school and has already been penciled in as an NBA prospect as he has put together a solid 1st season with 14.7 PPG, 7.4 APG, and 4.4 RPG. Siena has been terrible on offense this season as they currently rank 329th in the nation in team scoring and they will need to raise this number up slightly if they want to compete in the MAAC.

How Monmouth Hawks & Siena Saints Matchup.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Siena ranks 329th in the nation in team scoring as they score an average of 65.2 PPG while Monmouth ranks 341st as they score an average of 63.2 PPG.

Siena ranks 153rd in the nation in team defense as they hold opponents to an average of 70.4 PPG while Monmouth ranks 254th as they hold opponents to an average of 74.6 PPG.

Against The Spread Selection: Siena Saints

My reason for the pick :

Both these teams are having below average seasons but I like the Saints in this matchup as they should be able to win at home as Monmouth is 1-8 SU on the road this season. Monmouth is one of the worst teams in the nation in both team scoring and team defense, and while Siena has not been anything special on offense I like what they have on defense. Siena should be able to take advantage of the weak frontcourt of the Hawks as Evan Fisher is one of the top forwards in the MAAC. Siena should be able to use their solid defense to rattle the 341st offense and win at home.

Betting trends for Monmouth Hawks:

  • Monmouth is 3-6 ATS as a road underdog this season.

Betting trends for Siena Saints:

  • Siena is 4-3 ATS with 2-3 days off this season.
