Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

West Virginia Mountaineers vs TCU Horned Frogs

The TCU Horned Frogs are set to return home to the Schollmaier Arena after playing their previous 2 outings on the road and they will take on the West Virginia Mountaineers in a Big 12 clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. West Virginia has been one of the biggest disappointments in college basketball as they have started conference play 0-3 while TCU should be a darkhorse in the Pac-12 as they have a veteran-led lineup.

West Virginia Mountaineers's Latest Performance :

The West Virginia Mountaineers have been a 5 seed or better in the last 4 NCAA Tournaments but Bob Huggins and company look like a real risk to miss out on the postseason as they have started conference play 0-4. West Virginia’s latest loss came at home against a below-average Oklahoma State team as they went down 85-77. The Mountaineers did receive a monster outing out of junior guard James Bolden as he was able to record 31 points which is easily the biggest outing of the season for the 6-foot guard as he only averages 12 PPG which is good for 4th on the team. One positive for West Virginia has been the development of freshmen Derek Culver as he averages 12.7 PPG and 9.3 RPG off the bench, and he was able to record a double-double against the Cowboys as he contributed 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Mountaineers played without arguably their two best players as Esa Ahmad and Wesley Harris were held out in this contest which was a major blow to the production column as Ahmad is the leading scorer with 13.1 PPG and 5.6 RPG while Harris contributes 8.2 PPG and 5.1 RPG. Bob Huggins tried to deploy different players in the absence of Ahmad and Harris as true freshmen PG Trey Doomes played in the 1st game of his career but he failed to do much as he picked up 2 rebounds and 1 assist while going 0-1 from the field.

TCU Horned Frogs's Latest Performance :

TCU may have started 1-2 in conference play but you have to consider the magnitude of their losses as they have played on the road against Kansas and Oklahoma, two of the better teams in the Big 12. TCU’s latest outing was against the Oklahoma Sooners and the game went down to the wire as it resulted in a 76-74 Sooners win. Kouat Noi is the leading scorer for the Horned Frogs despite coming off the bench as he scores an average of 14.3 PPG, and he is one of the most electric scorers in the country. Noi played 30 of the team’s 40 minutes and he was able to record a team-high 30 points for Jamie Collins and company. Senior guard Alex Robinson is one of the most underrated guards in the Big 12 and we saw him play well against the Sooners as he was able to record 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists, Robinson has been able to score with 13..5 PPG but he also has great court vision as he averages 8.1 APG. Robinson’s backcourt partner plays a similar style of game as Desmon Bane is an all-around player which was on display against Oklahoma as he had 9 points, 6 assists, and 7 rebounds. Bane is the 2nd leading scorer for TCU as he averages 13.9 PPG but he also contributes 5.5 RPG and 3.3 APG. JD Miller may be the top forward for the Horned Frogs as the senior averages 10.8 PPG and 7.1 RPG, and he fell just short of a double-double in their latest outing as he contributed 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Against The Spread Selection: TCU Horned Frogs

My reason for the pick :

TCU finally gets to breathe as they have the opportunity to play a team that they can beat up on especially after playing two tight games on the road against the best teams in the Big 12. West Virginia has certain pieces that have played well this season but they have been unable to mesh together as a team which has killed them. TCU will continue their hot shooting hand with Noi coming off the bench and outscoring the weak West Virginia bench. The major stat line I am looking at here is the fact that West Virginia has the 203rd ranked scoring defense and TCU has the 65th ranked scoring offense which should be problematic for Bob Huggins. TCU will be ecstatic to get back in front of their home crowd and win a much-needed game, take TCU.
