Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Virginia Tech Hokies vs Virginia Cavaliers
The Virginia Cavaliers are set to return home to John Paul Jones Arena after playing on the road in their previous 2 outings and they will welcome in the Virginia Tech Hokies in an ACC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 8:00 PM. The 4th ranked Virginia Cavaliers are currently 1 of 2 undefeated teams in the country while Virginia Tech is enjoying a good season themselves as they rank inside the top 10.
Virginia Tech Hokies's Latest Performance :
Virginia Tech made the NCAA Tournament the last 2 seasons under Buzz Williams but nothing came out of them as they lost in the 1st round in both appearances, but I wouldn’t expect the same output this season as the Hokies look like a top team in the ACC which should land them a high seed come March. The Hokies are currently 3-0 in conference play and they will come into this matchup fresh off a win against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 52-49. Virginia Tech received a big outing out of junior forward Kerry Blackshaw Jr. as he was able to record a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, Blackshaw Jr. is the leading rebounder as he averages 6.2 RPG but he is also the 2nd leading scorer as he averages 14.1 PPG. The leading scorer against the Yellow Jackets was senior guard Ahmed Hill as he was able to pitch in 15 points which is slightly above his season average of 12.7 PPG. Virginia Tech was still able to pick up the win on the road despite a quiet outing from their top scorer as sophomore guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker was only able to contribute 4 points and 6 assists, Alexander-Walker is an NBA prospect and reasonably so as he enters this matchup averaging 17.8 PPG, 4.1 RPG, and 3.6 APG. The one area that Virginia Tech lacks is depth as they only play 3 guys off their bench, but they don’t receive much production from these guys and we saw that against Georgia Tech as they contributed 7 bench points.
Virginia Cavaliers's Latest Performance :
Virginia has been one of the top teams in the nation under Tony Bennett and they once again look destined for a #1 seed for a 2nd consecutive season as they dominated their non-conference schedule and have started ACC play as good as anyone. Virginia was able to show how good of a team they are on the road in their recent matchup as they went to Clemson and won 63-43. Junior guard Kyle Guy is the leading scorer for the Cavaliers as he averages 15.3 PPG and 4.3 RPG, and he was again able to contribute nicely in their recent outing with 13 points. The backcourt is the strength of this team and joining Guy is the sophomore guard De’Andre Hunter who averages 14 PPG and 5.3 RPG, Hunter had a nice game against the Tigers with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Junior guard Ty Jerome is the main ball handler for the Cavaliers and he is also the top assist guy as he enters this matchup averaging 4.4 APG, Jerome pitched in 8 points and 5 assists in their recent matchup. The bench is a main reason why this team has found success this season and we saw that against Clemson as they combined for 23 points. The former Alabama forward in Braxton Key has been a key piece all season long off the bench for Tony Bennett and company, and he was once again able to have a good game against the Tigers with 7 points and 8 rebounds while Jay Huff had 11 points and 7 rebounds off the bench as well.

My reason for the pick :
Virginia might be one of the more dominant teams in the nation but I like the Hokies and the points in this spot as we have a conference matchup as well as an in-state rivalry between top 10 teams. There is a ton of talk about how good the Virginia defense is but don’t underestimate the Virginia Tech defense as they rank only 3 spots behind in PPG allowed. Another difference is Virginia Tech has a significantly better scoring offense than Virginia and if they can hit their shots down the stretch especially from 3 we will have a close matchup. The one area of concern for the Hokies is their depth but when you are playing a slow pace team like the Cavaliers fatigue isn’t as much as a factor. The guard play will be a fun matchup as both teams have a handful of guards they play but I give the edge to Virginia Tech down low with Blackshaw Jr. Take the points and VTech.
