Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

St. Johns Red Storm vs Butler Bulldogs

The St. John’s Red Storm will meet the Butler Bulldogs in an all-important Big East matchup on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time at Hinkle fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. Butler was finally able to pick up a much-needed victory while also halting a two-game losing streak as they picked up a much-needed victory over the  DePaul Blue Demons on the road in their last time out. After going down by four points at the half, Butler exploded in the second half while outscoring the home team 51 – 29 during this time while also getting 19 points along with eight rebounds off the bench from Jordan Tucker as Butler shot 53% from the floor while connecting on 13 3-pointers en route to the win.

The St John’s Red Storm also halted a two-game losing streak in their last time out as they were able to pick up a victory over the Creighton Bluejays at home as 47% shooting was all that was needed in order for the Red Storm to pull out a victory. Also, Shamorie Ponds led the team with 22 points in this contest as St John’s ended with five double-digit scores on the night.

St. Johns Red Storm's Latest Performance :

As stated, Shamorie Ponds led the Red Storm in scoring with 22 points while pulling down five rebounds versus the Blue Jays of Creighton in the last outing while Mustapha Heron ended 7 of 10 from the floor while also chipping in 18 points. It will be important to note that St. Johns capitalized off 13 turnovers for the Blue Jays in this contest while also heavily outrebounded them for the eventual victory. Defensively, the Blue Jays were allowed 43% shooting from the floor and despite connecting on 11 3-pointers, Creighton allowed St Johns to get to the free-throw line frequently as they connected on 12 of 18 attempts compared to just three or four attempts for the visitors.

Marcus Zegarowski along with Savion Mintz led the team with 17 and 16 points, respectively, for a Creighton team that fell to the cellar of the Big East with the loss. Nonetheless, St John’s will look to extend their momentum in this contest as they will seek to win their second straight outing versus a St Bonaventure team that continues to struggle on both ends of the floor.  However, it is my opinion that they are struggling more on the offensive end at this point as their defense has certainly held serve in currently allowing teams just 70 points per outing during this time.

Butler Bulldogs's Latest Performance :

The offense for the Butler Bulldogs came alive in their last outing versus the DePaul Blue Demons as they exploded for 51 points in the second half, as stated, while also shooting 58% from the floor along with converting on 13 of 28 3-point shots en route to the victory. As stated, Tucker provided the offensive punch for the Bulldogs in this contest while scoring 19 points off the bench while leading scorer for the season Kamar Baldwin, chipped in 17 points in the contest. Furthermore, Sean McDermott also chipped in 17 points while going 4-8 from three-point range for a Butler team that shot just four free throws on the night compared to 16 for DePaul.

Nonetheless, Butler was able to outrebound Blue Demons in this contest and, despite committing 13 turnovers, was able to straighten things out in the second half in which to come out with the victory. They now look to face a St John’s team that sits in the fourth place slot with in the Big East Division and will certainly be looking to feed off of the momentum of a win versus the Creighton Bluejays in their last time out. Of course, the Red Storm also halted a losing streak of their own vs Creighton, as pointed out, as they shot 48% from the floor while also possessing a balanced scoring attack en route to the win.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be an interesting Big East matchup between the Red Storm and the Bulldogs on Saturday. On one hand, St John’s will certainly look to push the pace early and often in this contest in which to catch the defense for Butler on its heels. On the other hand, St Johns boasts a highly effective defense as well which is allowing opponents to shoot at only 41% clip per outing. With that being said, look for Butler to follow the same type of philosophy in it will certainly do them well in kick-starting their offense.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:   St John's Red Storm

My reason for the pick :

The Butler Bulldogs have won four of their last five home games, overall. However, they are coming off of a set of games to where four of their last six were on the road. In other words, the Bulldogs have not had a home game since  15-point win versus the Creighton Bluejays. With that being said, look for them to play much better within the confines of their home court on Saturday. However, the St. Johns  Red Storm, despite being losers of two of the last three road games, will come in with a healthy amount of focus and intensity in which to keep their winning play alive while also increasing their positioning within the conference as well. In all, St John’s has much to lose with the loss of this contest and will certainly pull out all the stops in which to pick up a much-needed victory.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

The under has been the play in two of the last three road games for the Red Storm and I certainly see their defense doing a solid job versus a Butler team that continues to struggle much on the offensive end. On the other hand, while the Bulldogs will certainly give up some critical baskets to the Red Storm throughout the contest, St Johns will have a lackluster night, for the most part, versus the Bulldogs as they have really relied on their defense during their current losing skid in which to remain competitive.

Betting trends for St. Johns Red Storm:

  • The Red Storm are 6-1-1 against the spread in last 8 games

  • The under is 4-1-1 in Red Storm last six games

Betting trends for Butler Bulldogs:

  • The Bulldogs are 3-1 against the spread in last 4 games

  • The over is 5-0 in  Bulldogs last 5 games
