Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Baylor Bears vs West Virginia Mountaineers

The Baylor Bears will travel to WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia,  for a Big 12 matchup versus a slumping West Virginia Mountaineers squad on Monday night at 9 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The Mountaineers five straight game losing streak was halted in an exciting win over the Kansas Jayhawks as their offense awakened just enough to shoot 47% on the night while the defense held the Jayhawks to just 43% for the contest en route to the victory.

On the other hand, the Baylor Bears atoned for a loss to Kansas in their prior outing by picking up a victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys on the road as they held Oklahoma State to just 38% shooting from the floor while Baylor also received a monster game from King McClure, who finished with 29 points on the night en route to the victory.

Baylor Bears's Latest Performance :

Baylor has simply been a middle of the road team thus far in the season as they have been able to pick up wins, yet, have also dropped some heartbreakers this season, as well, as the average margin per loss in their last  four losses have been by four Points. Nonetheless, they were able to outlast the Red Raiders in their last matchup as they outscored then 40-31 in the second half while getting 19 and 16 points, respectively, from Jared Butler along with Makai Mason as the Bears, despite shooting just 42% from the floor, combined for 11 3-pointers on the night compared to just five for Texas Tech.

And while the Red Raiders shot 47% from the floor during the contest, they also committed 17 turnovers on the night as leading scorer on the season in Jared Culver committed seven of these while leading the team with 19 points.

With the offense only shooting 43% from the floor on a nightly basis, Baylor has really had to rely on their overall defensive prowess in  which to remain competitive in 2018-19. I look for this to continue and what will be a very competitive and possibly low scoring matchup with a West Virginia Mountaineers team that has also had to rely on their defense, almost to a fault, this season. It will be important to note that West Virginia picked up a 13-point lead in the last matchup amongst these two teams back in March of 2018.

West Virginia Mountaineers 's Latest Performance :

One can certainly see that the 2018-19 season for the West Virginia Mountaineers has been indeed a disastrous one, thus far. They entered their matchup with the Kansas Jayhawks seeded last within Big 12 while also being losers of four straight games. Nonetheless, due to them converting on critical offensive possessions late in the game along with some critical defensive  stops, the West Virginia Mountaineers picked up a much-needed and confidence-building win versus the 7th ranked team in the nation in the Kansas Jayhawks in their last time out.

As stated, the defense certainly came to play as they forced 18 turnovers on the night while also holding Kansas to just 43% shooting for the night as they converted on only five three-pointers. West Virginia, on the other hand, shot 47% from the floor as Jermaine Haley led the team with 13 points while also hitting the game winning basketball. Nonetheless, the Mountaineers received a huge lifts off the bench from James Bolden along with Derek Culver as they chipped in 12 and 11 points, yet each went a combined 8-23 from the floor.

In all, Kansas’ inability to hold onto the ball certainly affected the flow of their offense in this contest, which can be attributed to the aggressive play of West Virginia’s defense throughout the game. In fact, the 64 points they allowed to Kansas was the lowest output for an opponent in their last three outings as they entered the game with the Jayhawks allowing 92 points to their last two opponents, on average.

While West Virginia has one four their last six home games, overall, they are losers of two of their last three games at WVU Coliseum. They will now look to faced a Baylor squad that has won two of their last three road games  while also coming off of a confidence-building victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders on the road in their last outing.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Baylor will be looking to  pick up their fourth win in five games in this contest versus a West Virginia team that will certainly bring the focus and intensity after their win versus the Kansas Jayhawks at home. Also, WVU  will also be confident due to their ability to pick up a victory in their last meeting versus the Bears, as well. Finally, due to the fact that Baylor has not played well on the road recently, the Mountaineers certainly have many things working in their favor  which may indeed allow them to pick up a victory in this contest. Nonetheless, despite Baylor’s issues on the road, each of them have been losses to where the Bears were in the game throughout.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Baylor Bears

My reason for the pick :

While I have no doubt that West Virginia will play with focus and intensity in this matchup, I will back the Baylor Bears as they seem to always have a knack for hunkering down on the defensive end, when needed, in which to keep their team in games. With that being the case, look for Baylor to hit some critical buckets down the stretch on a tough West Virginia defense while picking up the slim victory in the end.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

Look for both defenses to take center stage in this contest as I really do not see the offenses putting up many points throughout. West Virginia has not surpassed the 70-point mark in three of the last four outings, overall, while Baylor, as stated, shoots just 43% from the floor on a nightly basis while averaging 71 points per. With that being said, look for the under to be the strong play in this instance.

Betting trends for Baylor Bears:

  • The Bears are 5-1 against the spread in last 6 games

  • The over is 4-1 in Bears last 5 games

Betting trends for West Virginia Mountaineers :

  • The Mountaineers are 2-5 against the spread in last 7 games

  • The over is 5-3 in Mountaineers last eight games
