Maryland Terrapins vs Michigan State Spartans

The 22nd ranked Maryland Terrapins will visit Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing, Michigan, to take on the six ranked Michigan State Spartans on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Both teams are certainly playing outstanding ball at this time of season as they both serve as the top two teams in the Big Ten. With that being said, both teams will certainly be scrapping in which to pick up a hard-fought victory in this contest in which to extend their winning play.

The Spartans jumped on top of the Nebraska Cornhuskers early in their last outing while controlling the pace of the game throughout in getting a six-point victory on the road behind 29 points along with six rebounds from Cassius Winston, their leading scorer for the season, as he also pulled down six rebounds as well in the victory. Also, the Spartans shot just 43% from the floor while connecting on just 6 of 23 3-point attempts on the night; however, Michigan state was able to permit Nebraska to shoot just 32% from the floor while connecting on less than 20% of their long balls of the night en route to the victory.

Maryland, on the other hand, continues to roll as well as they picked up a huge blowout victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes on the road in their last outing has they not only posted 45 points in the first half alone, but, their defense held the Buckeyes to just 23 points in the second half as the Terrapins won their at 7th straight game while also remaining undefeated within the conference.

Maryland Terrapins's Latest Performance :

Anthony Cowan on along with Bruno Fernando have been the one-two punch for Maryland all Season as they led the team with 16 points along with six assists for Cowan in addition to Fernando chipping in 13 points along with pulling down 15 rebounds as they disposed of the Ohio State Buckeyes in their last outing in shooting well over 50% from the floor along with 64% from three-point range. Defensively, the Buckeyes  could get nothing done on the offensive end of the floor while ending the game shooting just 32% from the floor with leading scorer CJ Jackson going 6-15 on the night while ending with 15 points in defeat.

Fernando has recorded a double double in four the last five games for the Terrapins while Cowan has scored 20 points in each of the last five outings Maryland.  And while the Terrapins may not be scoring juggernauts in 2018-19 in averaging just 74 points per game, they are a very efficient team as they are ranked in the top 50 in the nation in field-goal percentage at a tad under 48% on a nightly basis.

On the other hand, their defense has certainly been another catalyst for this success on the season as they allow just 40% shooting to opponents per outing.  Furthermore, in their last three road games, each of those victories were by an average of 15 points with Cowan averaging 20 points during these outings while Fernando recorded a double double in two of the last three road games, overall, for the Terrapins.

Michigan State Spartans's Latest Performance :

The Michigan State Spartans continue to pick up win after win, despite their offense regressing a bit in total offensive output in their last 4 games.  Nonetheless, due to the play of leading scorer Cassius Winston, who has scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games for the Spartans, along with physical presence of Kenny Goins, who has collected at least 10 rebounds in three of the last four games for Michigan State, has allowed the Spartans to continue to rise not only within the top 25, but, within the Big Ten Conference, as well.   They will certainly be looking to hang on to their top seed when facing a dangerous Maryland squad on Monday night that has also been very successful on both ends of the floor throughout the season.

In all, Winston had a very productive night in the last matchup for the Spartans versus the Cornhuskers as he put in 29 points while also getting huge performances from Nick Ward, who recorded a double-double with 15 points along with 10 rebounds. Goins also chipped in 7 points along with 11 rebounds for a Michigan State team that shot just 43% from the floor, as stated, yet held Nebraska to just 32% shooting on the night as James Palmer Jr went 6-24 from the field for Nebraska while leading the team with 24 points in the losing effort.

Nonetheless, Spartans will return home after a two-game road trip to battle the Terrapins before going back on the road for their next two conference games versus Iowa and Purdue. It will be important to note that Michigan state has been dominant both at home and on the road all season, however, have really taking the advantage of playing amongst their own fans at Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing. In other words, during their five game home winning streak, the Spartans have won by at least 18 points in each of these matchups, as two of these wins included 28 and 30 point wins versus Oakland along with Northern Illinois in consecutive games.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be a very competitive Big 10 matchup on Monday night versus two teams that represent the top two squads within the Big Ten Conference, as stated.  Of course, Michigan State will certainly want to hold serve at home versus Maryland in what will be their first matchup of the season, while one can be assured that Winston will certainly bring his A-game for this contest as well. Nonetheless, one can also look for Maryland to remain competitive throughout this contest, as well, as they have really been dominant both at home as well as on the road this season.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick; Michigan State Spartans

My reason for the pick :

Look for Michigan State to get some brakes in the second half of this contest in which to pull out an exciting victory on Monday night versus a tough, physical Maryland squad at home. Of course, one should not look for a blowout in this game as both teams will battle from start to finish while momentum will swing frequently. Nonetheless, when all is said and done, the Spartans will  begin to assert themselves on the defensive end as the game wears down in which to limit scoring opportunities for Maryland in which to remain the top seed within the Big Ten.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

While both these teams are very efficient from the floor, I will back the under in this contest as both defenses will begin to assert themselves throughout the duration of this contest, thus signaling that the total will not be surpassed. Also, the under has been the play in the last three games for Michigan State while also being the result in the last two games for Maryland. With that being said, the under is indeed the strong play in this instance.
