Minnesota Golden Gophers vs Michigan Wolverines
The Minnesota Golden Gophers will travel to Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to battle the fourth-ranked team in the nation in the Michigan Wolverines on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Michigan is coming off their first loss of the season to the Wisconsin Badgers as they shot just 40% on the night while committing a whopping 17 turnovers in the loss. Their defense, which has certainly been the tip of the spear in their success in 2018-19, allowed 44% shooting from the floor to the Badgers in this contest as Ethan Happ put up 26 points while pulling down 10 boards in the win for Wisconsin.
Minnesota has exchanged wins for losses, and vice-versa, throughout their last four outings. Nonetheless, they were able to pick up a home win versus the Penn State Nittany Lions in their last outing has they outscored the Nittany Lions 35-26 in the second half while erasing an eight-point halftime deficit in addition getting the hard-fought victory behind 19 points, 21 rebounds, along with four assist from Jordan Murphy, recorded his second Double-Double in the last three games for the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota Golden Gophers's Latest Performance :
The struggling Minnesota Golden Gophers went down by eight points at the half, however, was able to mount a come back in the second half as they outscored the visitors 35 – 26 in the second half en route to a huge, confidence-building victory. And while the Golden Gophers were only able to shoot 40% on the night while making good on 3 and 14 3 point attempts on the night, they were able to convert 22 of 30 free throw attempts on the night, which ultimately allowed them to seize control of the game and pull out a victory.
As stated, Murphy had a monster game for the Golden Gophers while pulling down 21 rebounds on a night where he led the team with 19 points. Daniel Arturo also ended the game with 10 points as he went 4-5 from the floor for the Golden Gophers. Penn State’s Lamar Stevens went 3-3 from three-point range while leading the team with 27 points in defeat for a Nittany Lions team that continues to reside in the cellar of the Big Ten standings. On the other hand, Minnesota occupies the six place slot with in the Big Ten just behind the Iowa Hawkeyes, to whom they will face after their matchup with the Wolverines.
Michigan Wolverines's Latest Performance :
And while Michigan remains to be a rather middle-of-the-road team on the offensive end in averaging just 74 points per game, they are, nonetheless, a very good offensive team as they are shooting just a tad under 47% from the floor on a nightly basis. In their last outing versus the Wisconsin Badgers, however, Michigan put up only 54 points on just 40% shooting from the field.
On the other hand, Michigan connected on just 5 of 18 3-point attempts as Jon Teske along with Jordan Poole led the team with 15 and 14 points in the loss. Leading scorer on the season in Ignas Brazdeikis went 0-5 from the floor on the night while finishing the game scoreless. And while the Michigan defense allowed Wisconsin to convert on just 5 of 19 3-point attempts on the night, they did, however, allow the Badges to shoot 45% from the floor as they were not able to overcome 26 points along with 10 rebounds from Ethan Happ in the end as Wisconsin came up with more than their fair share of defensive stops to where the end of the game as Wisconsin with a pull away and seal the victory.
Of course, Michigan will certainly be looking to get back onto the floor as soon as possible in which to pick up a much-needed victory. Actually, they may have a bit of success versus a Minnesota team that has had just as many issues as it relates to scoring throughout the season as the Wolverines have experienced. In other words, I see yet another long night for a Minnesota offense that has only put up an average of 68 points per game.
How Minnesota Golden Gophers & Michigan Wolverines Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Minnesota is 7 – 11 against the spread while the OU is 9 – 8
Michigan is 9 – 9 against the spread while the OU is 7 – 10
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Minnesota Golden Gophers defense has suddenly gotten better as the season has progressed, primarily due to their offense not carrying its load. As a result, the defense has had to step up during this tumultuous time for the Golden Gophers as Minnesota , despite being 2-2 in their last four games overall, are winners of eight of their last 10, overall. The Michigan Wolverines, as stated, certainly did not play their best in their last matchup vs the Wisconsin Badgers. With that being said, one can certainly look for them to play better on both sides of the ball in this contest as well. However, it will be important to note that the Golden Gophers are only allowing teams to average only 43% shooting from the floor on a nightly basis.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Michigan Wolverines
My reason for the pick :
While I believe that Minnesota will certainly bring their focus and intensity for this all important conference matchup vs Michigan, look for the Wolverines to clamp down on the defensive end of the floor in the which to essentially take the Minnesota Gophers offense out of the equation early. In other words, Michigan will show and prove in this contest as they will assert themselves early and often on the defensive end which will allow them to obtain more efficient offensive opportunities, in turn. Expect a solid performance from Michigan in this contest as they will win in what will be a blowout.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
The under has been the play in four of the last five games for the Michigan Wolverines at home while also being the play in five of the last nine games, overall, for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. It is for this reason that I expect these trends to continue as one can certainly expect Michigan to put in a much better defensive performance after their loss to the Badgers. On the other hand, there is much incentive from Minnesota to play well on the defensive end as well as they will be facing in Michigan team that has struggled throughout the season in putting the ball in the basket on a consistent basis.
