Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Providence Friars vs Xavier Musketeers
Two Big East teams that have struggled mightily in conference play thus far will meet on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. eastern time at Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the Providence Friars will battle the Xavier Musketeers. Xavier now stands at 2-3 within the conference after suffering a 10-point loss on the road vs the Villanova Wildcats in their last time out as the Wildcats were able to outlast a Musketeers team that begin to heat up in the second half; Nonetheless, Xavier ended the game shooting just 44% from the floor while Villanova was able to not only shoot 50% from the field in the contest, but, also shot 44% from three-point range as they made good on a whopping 15 3-pointers en route to the victory.
The Providence Friars could not build from a victory over the Seton Hall Pirate in their prior outing as they fell to the Marquette Golden Eagles in their most recent outing. In this contest, the Golden Eagles rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit in which to post 53 points in the second half while also reclaiming the lead and sealing the victory in the meantime behind 25 points from Sam Hauser along with Markus Howard with 24 for the contest. Also, both Hauser and Howard combined to go 6-11 from three-point range in this matchup, as well.
Providence Friars's Latest Performance :
Providence could not contain their momentum from a stellar first-half versus the Marquette Golden Eagles as they were outscored 52 – 34 in the second half en route to yet another defeat. Nate Watson along with Alpha Diallo were the only two double-digit scorers for the Friars as they finished with 21 and 18 points, respectively, as they each pulled down eight rebounds apiece.
Nonetheless, as stated, Hauser along with Howard were the stars of the game for the Golden Eagles in this contest as they combined for 49 points as Howard was also able to pull down nine rebounds while also dishing out three assists in the win for Marquette. Marquette was also stellar from the free throw line in this game as they connected on 23-25 attempts. Finally, despite being outrebounded by 8 boards in the contest, the Golden Eagles were able to capitalize off 10 turnovers throughout the course of the game in which to pick up the much-needed conference win.
As stated, Providence continues to have a rough go of it on the road as in their previous road outing they lost by six in overtime to the Georgetown Hoyas while following this up by a second half implosion by Marquette in their most recent road outing. Nonetheless, Providence will look to get back on the winning track versus an Xavier team that continues to struggle as well on both sides of the ball. Fortunately for Providence, they have had a bit of success vs. Xavier in the past as they picked up a slim victory in March of 2018.
Xavier Musketeers's Latest Performance :
Despite their last loss to the Villanova Wildcats, the Musketeers continue to be winners of two of their last three games, overall. Furthermore, Xavier looked as if they recovered from an earlier two game skid by winning two straight games leading up to their matchup with the Villanova Wildcats. Nonetheless, when all was said and done, Xavier could not withstand over 60% shooting for the Wildcats in addition to 22 points from Phil Booth along with 18 from Colin Gillespie.
Villanova turned the ball over ten times, total, in this matchup; However, the Musketeers could not capitalize throughout the course of the game as they were also slightly outrebounded in the contest while shooting horribly from the free-throw line as well. Xavier obtained 21 points from Tyrique Jones along with 15 points from Naji Marshall in a losing effort, as this has essentially been the mantra for Xavier throughout the season as they have not been able to maintain any kind of consistency, particularly on the offensive end.
Nonetheless, the Musketeers are winners of four of their last five home games, overall, as their defense has been the catalyst of their success at Cintas Center as their offense has put up an average of 71 points per game during this time. On face value, one can certainly expect the defense for Xavier to look to step up in this matchup versus Providence as the Friars have also been in an offensive funk recently as they have scored 72 or more points in just one of their last five games. Also, the Friars are also winless in their last two road games, overall, and while they played a decent first-half versus the Marquette Golden Eagles, the Big East’s second place team currently, they fizzled in the second half en route to yet another defeat.
How Providence Friars & Xavier Musketeers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
Providence is 8 – 10 ATS while the OU is 9 – 8
Xavier is 6 – 11 – 2 ATS while the OU is 9 – 10
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This will certainly be a highly competitive matchup amongst Xavier and Providence as each will be looking to right themselves out of a present funk which has seen the Musketeers lose three of their last five games, overall, as stated. On the other hand, Providence has currently dropped four of their last five games, altogether, as each team has had their fair share of issues on the offensive end.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Xavier Musketeers
My reason for the pick :
While both teams have struggled throughout the season, I will back Xavier in this contest in that they have been much better at home in recent matchups and will certainly push the pace early and often in which to catch the defense for Providence on its heels in addition to attempting to also picking up easy buckets in transition in the meantime. Of course, Providence will certainly bring their focus and intensity for this contest in which to pick up a much-needed conference victory as well; However, their offense is shooting just 43% from the floor on a nightly basis, as I have little to no faith that they will be able to shore up these deficiencies in this matchup verses an Xavier team that, despite giving up 85 points in their last outing, are only allowing opponents to shoot 43% from the floor per game.
Totals Selection: Pick: Under
My reason for the prediction :
With the way both offenses have been up and down lately, combined with both defenses allowing 43% shooting to opponents, or less, on a game by game basis, I will back the under to be the strong play in this contest. The Musketeers will certainly be looking to play much better on the defensive end of the floor after allowing 85 points to the Wildcats while Providence will also be looking to atone from a disastrous second-half to where they played no defense, at all, in their loss to the Golden Eagles.
