Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Tennessee Volunteers vs Vanderbilt Commodores

The third-ranked team in the nation in the Tennessee Volunteers will visit Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville, Tennessee, in which to battle the Vanderbilt Commodores in SEC college basketball action on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. Due to a five-game losing streak, the Vanderbilt Commodores find themselves within the cellar of the Southeastern Conference at this point in the season. Furthermore, the Commodores dropped their second straight road game in their last outing versus the Mississippi State Bulldogs as the Commodores could never get nothing going on the offensive end throughout the contest as they shot just 36% from the floor while getting just 13 points from Saban Lee while the  other double-digit scorer on the night for Vanderbilt was Aaron Nesmith 11 points. And while Mississippi state was not overly stellar in shooting just 46% on the night as they were able to heavily outrebound Vanderbilt in this contest will also capitalizing on 14 turnovers en route to the victory.

The Tennessee Volunteers look to remain atop the SEC as they were able to squeak out a victory over a resilient Alabama Crimson Tide team on the road in their last outing. Tennessee was in full control at the end of the first half as they went by 12 points; However, Alabama heated up in the second half while outscoring the Volunteers 36 – 27 in the second half to make the game very interesting. Nonetheless, 21 points from the Volunteers’ Grant Williams along with 14 turnovers from the Crimson Tide eventually sealed the fate for Vandy in what was an exciting contest throughout.

Tennessee Volunteers 's Latest Performance :

And while the Volunteers were certainly very much in control early on in their matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide on the road, as stated, the Crimson Tide woke up in the second half in which to make this game very interesting coming down the stretch. Nonetheless, while the Volunteers only shot 43% from the floor while making good on just four 3-pointers on the night, they were certainly able to win the rebounding battle in this contest while also forcing 13 turnovers on the night for Alabama, which proved costly and them picking up the much-needed conference victory.

That stated, Grant Williams led the team with 21 points while Admiral Schofield chipped in 12 for Tennessee as they remained atop the SEC with the exciting victory. On the other hand, Dante Hall scored 16 points for Alabama in the loss while the man of the hour for the Crimson Tide was John Petty who came off the bench in which to go 6-10 for long-range while ending with 30 points in defeat. The victory for the Volunteers was their first victory of 10 points or less in their last nine games since they picked up a three-point win over the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Nonetheless, the Volunteers will certainly take the win and move forward as they will now face a struggling Vanderbilt Commodores squad that will be looking to get back on the right track on their home court. It would be important to note that Vanderbilt happens to be winners of four of their last seven home games, overall. However, they are winless in their last three games on their home court as well as their offense has only put up 64 points, on average, during these outings. Unfortunately, the Volunteers have allowed 70 points or more in just one of their last eight games.

Vanderbilt Commodores 's Latest Performance :

The Vanderbilt Commodores have been atrocious on the offensive end during their  current five-game losing streak as they have scored 71 points, or less, in each of these outings.  And while their offense certainly sunk to a new low in their last outing versus the Mississippi State Bulldogs at home as Vanderbilt posted just 55 points for the game as they were unable to eclipse the 28-  point mark in either half while allowing Mississippi State to push them around on the boards in addition to shooting 46% for the night en route to the victory.

The Bulldogs were led by Quinndary Weatherspoon with 17 points as he also pulled down eight rebounds as well in the victory. Again, Lee and Nesmith led the Commodores with 13 and 11 points, respectively, as Vanderbilt possessed only two double-digit scorers on the night. And while the Commodores visited the free-throw line twice as many times as Mississippi State in this contest, they were only able to convert on 58% of their attempts while also committing 14 turnovers in yet another ugly conference loss.

A date with the Tennessee Volunteers will certainly not be something that Vanderbilt will be looking forward to as their dismal offense will be looking to find some type of headway versus a Tennessee defense that is ranked in the top 50 in opponent field-goal percentage, points scored, as well as three-point percentage  per night. Furthermore, the Volunteers are undefeated in the last three road games, overall, while their offense is averaging 82 points during this time.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be an important SEC contest for both teams as the Vanderbilt Commodores, as stated, will be looking to come out of  an offensive funk vs one of the best teams in the nation on the defensive end of the floor. On the other hand, their  defense certainly needs to step up as Tennessee can certainly put the ball in the basket in averaging 86 points per game on 51% shooting for the season.  Of course, with so much on the line for the Volunteers, they will certainly be looking to bring the focus and intensity for this matchup over a team that they should dominate for 40 minutes.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Tennessee Volunteers

My reason for the pick :

I will back Tennessee in this contest as I happen to believe that Vanderbilt is simply not a good team on either side of the ball in 2018-19. With that being the case, look for Tennessee to push the pace constantly in which to pick up easy buckets in transition and / or get to the free-throw line. In addition, the Volunteers will also neutralize an already inconsistent offense for Vanderbilt throughout the contest in which to pick up the blowout victory in the end.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over

My reason for the prediction :

Tennessee has scored 80 or more points in six of their last seven games, overall. Also, the Tennessee Volunteers have shown a huge penchant for scoring on the road lately as the over has been the play in the last three road games, overall. With that being the case, one can certainly expect the Volunteers to continue to roll in this contest versus a reeling Vanderbilt Commodores team as the over will indeed be the strong play.

Betting trends for Tennessee Volunteers :

  • The Volunteers are 5-1  against the spread in last 6 games

  • The over is 3 – 1 in Volunteers last four games

Betting trends for Vanderbilt Commodores :

  • The Commodores are 1-4 against the spread in last 5 games

  • The under is 5-0 in Commodores last 5 games
