Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Kansas State Wildcats

The Kansas State Wildcats are set to return home to Bramlage Coliseum for their 2nd consecutive home game where they will welcome in the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a Big 12 clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. Kansas State has played well as of recent as they are currently 4-2 in Big 12 play while Texas Tech may be the 14th ranked team in the country but they are on a 2 game losing skid.

Texas Tech Red Raiders's Latest Performance :

Texas Tech was supposed to be one of the top teams in the Big 12 this season and while it is still early in conference play we have seen the Red Raider struggle down the stretch as they have dropped 2 consecutive games to unranked teams. Texas Tech was up by as many as 13 points against Baylor in their recent matchup but they were unable to put the Bears away which eventually led to a 73-62 loss. The top player for the Red Raiders has been sophomore guard Jarrett Culver as he comes into this game averaging 18.8 PPG and 7.1 RPG, and we saw him hit this mark and some more against the Bears as he recorded 19 points and 9 rebounds. The Red Raiders have struggled to find consistent production outside of Culver and we saw that against Baylor as the 2nd leading scorer in South Dakota transfer Matt Mooney (10.7 PPG)  was only able to contribute 2 points. Sophomore guard Davide Morreti has been a nice addition of Chris Beard as the Italy native is averaging 10 PPG, and we saw him have a nice outing against the Baylor Bears as he contributed 13 points. Chris Beard has looked for more production from his bench this season but they have been up and down just like their starting lineup. Senior guard Brandone Francis was a top recruit when he came out of high school and he finally showed Texas Tech his abilities against Baylor as he pitched in 14 points off the bench which is well above his season average of 5.8 PPG.

Kansas State Wildcats's Latest Performance :

Kansas State made a push to the Elite 8 last season and returned all their players from that team which led people to believe they will make some noise in the Big 12, and we have finally seen that team come along as we expected as they have rattled off 4 straight conference wins to put them at 2nd in the division. Kansas State’s latest win comes at home against the TCU Horned Frogs as they used their stingy defense in a 65-55 victory. Kansas State has shown the ability to distribute their scoring throughout their starting lineup as 4 different Wildcats average at least 10+ PPG. Junior forward Xavier Sneed stepped up in the TCU game as he was able to record 18 points and 4 rebounds, Sneed averages 10.4 PPG and 5.5 RPG. The leading scorer on the season for Bruce Weber and company has been senior guard Barry Brown Jr. as he averages 15.4 PPG and 4.1 RPG, and he was able to reach double-figures in the scoring department once again with 10 points and 5 rebounds against the Horned Frogs. Senior forward Dean Wade has battled an injury all season but we saw him at his full potential in their latest game as he contributed 16 points and 6 assists, Wade has been the top rebounder all season for the Wildcats as he enters this game averaging 6.7 RPG while also contributing 13.3 PPG. Kansas State has been one of the top defensive units in the nation this season as they enter this game ranked as the 5th ranked scoring defense.

Against The Spread Selection: Texas Tech Red Raiders +1.5

My reason for the pick :

Texas Tech needs to respond with a big-time win if they want to stay within striking distance of the Kansas Jayhawks and I will back them in this spot against a similarly built team in the Kansas State Wildcats. Both teams have been amazing on the defensive end of the court this season but the major difference is that Texa Tech is outscoring the Kansas State Wildcats by 6 points. Texas Tech will continue receiving big outings from Culver but they will need to find a way to get Mooney and Moretti more involved in the scoring department as they both score an average of 10+ PPG. Texas Tech will use their zone defense to keep the 327th ranked scoring offense in check and try to get transition baskets to prevent Kansas State from setting up their defense. Kansas State has also been awful in covering the spread at home this season which is why I will take my chance with the Red Raiders.

  • Texas Tech is 2-1 ATS as an underdog this season.
