Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Villanova Wildcats vs Butler Bulldogs
The Butler Bulldogs return home to Hinkle Fieldhouse for their 2nd consecutive home game where they will take on the Villanova Wildcats in a Big East clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. Butler has been a middle of the pack team in the Big East this season as they are 3-3 in conference play while Villanova is the 18th ranked team in the country and arguably the best team in the conference as they are a perfect 5-0.
Villanova Wildcats's Latest Performance :
Villanova started the season off with some rough losses but Jay Wright has finally got the defending National Champions back on the right foot as they have climbed to 18th in the AP Poll after starting Big East play 5-0. The Wildcats were able to extend their win streak to 6 games this past weekend as they beat the Xavier Musketeers 85-75 at home. Senior guard Phil Booth has been the go-to guy for the Wildcats as he enters this game averaging 18.4 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and 3.8 APG, and he was able to have a monster outing against Xavier with 22 points and 5 assists. Booth is the only senior from their 2 recent National Championships as Eric Paschall anchors the frontcourt where he averages 16.6 PPG and 6.4 RPG, Paschall flirted around the double-double mark in their recent matchup as he recorded 17 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Sophomore guard Connor Gillespie has stepped into the starting role this season and we saw how much he has grown as he dropped 18 points and 4 assists against Xavier, Gillespie enters this game averaging 11.4 PPG. The bench was fairly solid for Jay Wright and company in their recent game as they received a total of 19 bench points. Sophomore forward Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree has been coming off the bench as of recent and we saw how effective he has become as he was able to contribute 11 points and 6 rebounds in their latest outing which is well above his season average of 5.4 PPG and 6.3 RPG.
Butler Bulldogs 's Latest Performance :
Butler has been as consistent as any team in the Big East this season as they will be seeking their 5th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance come March but they may need to make a better push in Big East play as the Bulldogs are fighting the .500 mark through the early slate of conference games. Butler comes into this game on a small 2 game win streak but their latest win was a good one as they beat the St. John’s Red Storm 80-71. Junior guard Kemar Baldwin has been the top guy for the Bulldogs all season as he averages 17.7 PPG, 5.7 RPG, and 3.9 APG, and we saw that on display in their latest game as he was able to record 30 points and 8 rebounds in the win. Junior forward Sean McDermott has been the top guy scorer in the frontcourt this season as he scores an average of 10.4 PPG, and although he didn’t reach that mark against St. John’s he still had an effective game with 7 points and 12 rebounds. The Bulldogs received a monster outing from their bench as they recorded 37 points. Sophomore forward Jordan Tucker was a top recruit for LaVall Jordan and company and he was able to meet those expectations in their latest game as he recorded 24 points and 6 rebounds in the win. Jordan also has the luxury of bringing senior guard Paul Jorgensen off the bench as he is the 2nd leading scorer on the team with 12.3 PPG, Jorgensen was able to record 9 points against St. John’s.

My reason for the pick :
This game has the feeling that it will go right down to the wire but I like the Wildcats to leave Butler with a win in this one as they have been as hot as any team in the nation with 6 straight wins. Villanova has had 2 go-to scoring options all season as Phil Booth and Eric Paschall can score at any level while Butler has depended on Kemar Baldwin throughout the season. Villanova has been the slightly better offensive team this season and they have only been better during conference play. Villanova will need their bench to play at a high level to match the intensity of the Bulter bench and I think they should be up for the challenge as Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree and Albany transfer Joe Cremo have played well. Jay Wright is a better coach than LaVall Jordan and I think he will scheme something up to keep the Wildcats in front for most of the game. I am riding with Villanova is this Pickem game.
