Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
VCU Rams vs Rhode Island Rams
The Rhode Island Rams are set to return home to the Ryan Center after playing on the road this past weekend and they will take on the VCU Rams in an Atlantic-10 clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. VCU has been one of the best teams in the conference this season as they are currently 4-1 in A-10 play while Rhode Island has been stuck in the middle of the conference with a 3-2 record.
VCU Rams's Latest Performance :
VCU missed out on the NCAA Tournament last season after going to the Big Dance in 7 consecutive seasons prior to their absence and the Rams look destined to punch their ticket this season as they currently sit at 4-1 in A-10 play with non-conference wins over Texas and Temple, two teams who should be in contention for a bid as well. VCU was able to extend their win streak to two games after winning at home this past weekend against the UMass Minutemen 68-50. VCU was able to receive a big outing from junior guard De’Riante Jenkins as he was able to contribute 17 points and 7 rebounds which is well above his season average of 11.7 PPG and 3.5 RPG. The leading scorer on the season for the Rams has been junior guard Marcus Evans as he is averaging 13.4 PPG, but he was unable to hit that mark against the Minutemen as he only contributed 8 points but he did make his impact elsewhere with 6 assists. The top rebounder for the Rams is sophomore forward Marcus Santos-Silva as he is averaging 6.8 RPG and 8.5 PPG, but he was held in check in their recent game with only 7 points and 2 rebounds. Junior forward Isaac Van was able to have a productive game for Mike Rhoades and company as he contributed 16 points and 5 rebounds which is slightly above his season average of 11.2 PPG and 4.1 RPG. VCU is one of the top defensive units in the country as they enter this game ranked as the 18th ranked scoring defense.
Rhode Island Rams's Latest Performance :
The Rhode Island Rams lost 4 of their 5 starters from last years team as well as their head coach which has prompted this program to go into a rebuilding stage under a new coach and a young team, but they have played better than expected in conference play as they are 3-2. Rhode Island enters this game on a 2 game win streak after beating the La Salle Explorers on the road in their recent outing 78-67. The Rams received a big outing from their backcourt in this game as the leading scorer in junior guard Jeff Dowtin was able to record 22 points and 4 rebounds, Dowtin enters this game averaging 16.7 PPG and 4 APG. Joining Dowtin in the backcourt is sophomore gaurd Fatts Russell who is having just as good as a season as Dowtin as he is averaging 15 PPG and 3.8 APG, Russell had a solid outing against La Salle with 20 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. The frontcourt is also in good shape with the presence of junior forward Cyril Langevine as he is averaging a double-double with 14 PPG and 10.2 RPG, and he was able to play a vital role in their recent game as he recorded 19 points and 14 rebounds in the win. Freshmen guard Tyrese Martin has played an important role in rebounding the ball for the Rams this season and his performance against La Salle is an example of that as he contributed 9 rebounds. Depth is one factor that has killed Rhode Island during the early portion of the season as they only have 1 guy who averages more than 4 PPG.

Against The Spread Selection: VCU Rams
My reason for the pick :
The Rhode Island Rams have been much better as of recent but VCU still looks like one of the better teams in the A-10 and I think they show that in this one. VCU has one of the top defenses in the country as they are holding opponents close to 60 PPG and that will play into their hand as Rhode Island ranks 282nd in the nation in team scoring. VCU has 3 guys who are giving consistent production and I think they will find success on the road in this one. Rhode Island has also struggled to cover the spread after a win as they are only 2-7 ATS in those type of games. Take the VCU Rams to extend their A-10 record to 5-1.
