Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Auburn Tigers vs Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Mississippi State Bulldogs are set to return home to Humphrey Coliseum after playing 2 consecutive road games and they will play host to the Auburn Tigers in an SEC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 8:30 PM. Mississippi State and Auburn are still ranked inside the top 25 despite struggling as of recent in SEC play as both teams are below .500 with a 2-3 record.
Auburn Tigers's Latest Performance :
The Auburn Tigers may be ranked 16th in the country but they have struggled as of recent as they have dropped 2 consecutive games in SEC play and have lost a major contributor to injury. Auburn comes into this game fresh off a loss on the road against the South Carolina Gamecocks as their comeback effort fell just short in an 80-77 game. Auburn is a three-point shooting team as it is a major reason they are the 21st ranked scoring offense in the country but they struggled from behind the arc as they went 7 for 25 as well as had 2 of their best forwards foul out. Senior guard Bryce Brown has been the leading scorer for the Tigers as he comes into this game averaging 16.9 PPG and he was able to hit that mark once again as he had 17 points against the Gamecocks. Joining Brown in the backcourt is sophomore guard Jared Harper who averages 15.3 PPG and 6.6 APG, and while he was able to contribute 17 points and 5 assists in their latest outing he struggled from 3 as he went 1 for 6. Auburn has been playing without one of their top big men in Austin Wiley which is a major hit considering the junior was averaging 10.8 PPG and 6.1 RPG before his injury. Sophomore forward Chuma Okeke is the top guy in the frontcourt for the Tigers as he averages 10.1 PPG and 6.2 RPG, and he was able to hit that mark against USC with 13 points and 7 rebounds but he did struggle to find his stroke as he went 4 for 12 from the field.
Mississippi State Bulldogs's Latest Performance :
Mississippi State has not made a postseason appearance since 2009 and while the Bulldogs are still 14-4 this season they have struggled down the stretch as they were once ranked as high as 14th in the AP Poll. The Bulldogs come into this matchup looking to avoid a losing streak as they most recently lost on the road against the Kentucky Wildcats 76-55. A major reason behind the Bulldogs loss was due to them going 3 for 20 from the 3-point line as well as having 2 starters foul out of the game. The leading scorer on the season for the Bulldogs has been senior Quinndary Weatherspoon as he is averaging 16.8 PPG and 5.7 RPG, and he was the lone starter for the Bulldogs to reach double-digit points as he had 19 against the Wildcats. Senior forward Aric Holman has been an important piece behind the team’s success this season as he averages 11.7 PPG and 7.7 RPG but he was unable to do much of anything against Kentucky as he had 0 points and 2 rebounds while also fouling out in 20 minutes. Junior guard Lamar Peters was another guy that failed to contribute in their latest outing as he was held to 5 points and 3 assists which is well below his season average of 12.8 PPG and 5.7 RPG. Junior guard Tyson Carter was able to come off the bench and make up for some of the lost production as he contributed 11 points while freshmen guard Robert Woodward was able to contribute 4 points and 13 rebounds off the bench as well.

Against The Spread Selection: Mississippi State Bulldogs
My reason for the pick :
Both teams have struggled as of recent and are in dire need of a win so they don’t fall too far down the totem pole of the SEC and I will give the advantage to the Bulldogs in this one as they finally get to return home after a road trip while Auburn is still on the road. Mississippi State struggled to shoot the ball in their latest outing and there is nothing better for a shooting team than returning back to their home gym. Weatherspoon will continue his dominance but the determining factor will be Holman and Peters returning back to form in this one. Auburn has only covered the spread in 1 of their 4 road games this season which tells me there shooting doesn’t translate on the road. Take the Bulldogs at home.
