Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Clemson Tigers vs North Carolina State Wolfpack

The NC State Wolfpack are set to return home to PNC Arena after playing 3 consecutive games on the road and they will play host to the Clemson Tigers in an ACC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 2:00 PM. Clemson has struggled through the early portion of conference play as they enter this matchup with a 1-4 ACC record while NC State is .500 in conference play but still rank inside the AP top 25 at the 21st spot.

Clemson Tigers's Latest Performance :

Clemson is one of the more disappointing teams in the country as they were once the 16th ranked team in the country but have now fallen down the totem pole of the deep ACC with a 1-4 conference record. Clemson comes into this game well rested as they last played on the road this past Tuesday where they fell to the Florida State Seminoles 77-68. Clemson’s leading scorer is senior gaurd Marcquise Reed as he comes into this game averaging 19.3 PPG and 5.5 RPG, but he was unable to reach that mark against the Seminoles as he was held to 13 points and 6 rebounds. The Tigers had an unlikely source step up in this game as sophomore forward Aamir Simms was able to record a team-high 18 points and 5 rebounds which is well above his season average of 9.6 PPG and 4.6 RPG. The leading rebounder on the season for the Tigers is senior forward Elijah Thomas as he averages 7.9 RPG but he is also a productive scorer as he comes into this game as the 2nd leading scorer with 13.3 PPG. The former top 50 recruit was able to have yet another productive game against the Seminoles as the 6’9 forward recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Clyde Trapp has developed as the top bench piece for the Tigers this season and we saw him have a productive game against Florida State with 9 bench points which is slightly above his season average of 6.5 PPG. Clemson’s main struggle this season has been consistent scoring as they currently rank 241st in the nation in PPG which is problematic in a high-scoring conference like the ACC.

North Carolina State Wolfpack's Latest Performance :

There is a lot of buzz around NC State that this is a team who could compete in the ACC and after making the NCAA Tournament in year 1 of the Kevin Keatts era expectations are high for this veteran-led team. NC State comes into this game in the middle of the pack in the ACC and will be looking to avoid a losing streak after dropping a road game against the Louisville Cardinals 84-77. The leading scorer on the season for the Wolfpack has been senior guard Torin Dorn as he comes into this game averaging 14.3 PPG and 7.1 RPG, and he was able to make his impact felt against Lousiville as he contributed 18 points and 6 rebounds. Dorn didn’t have the biggest game out from the Wolfpack either as sophomore guard Braxton Beverly was able to record a team-high 19 points which is well above his season average of 9 PPG. Junior guard C.J. Bryce was the leading rebounder against Lousiville as the UNC Wilmington transfer fell just shy of a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds, Bryce is the 2nd leading scorer for the Wolfpack with 12.2 PPG. Sophomore forward Derek Funderburk was a top recruit for Keatts a few years back and he finally received his 1st start of the season on Thursday, but he was kept in check as he was only able to record 4 points and 3 rebounds. NC State comes into this matchup as one of the top scoring teams in D1 basketball as they rank 6th in team scoring as they score an average of 86.7 PPG.

Against The Spread Selection: NC State Wolfpack

My reason for the pick :

Clemson has been a disappointment this season as they returned most of their production from their 5th seeded NCAA Tournament team from last year and I think they will continue to struggle in the tough ACC as they will have to go on the road and play a really good NC State team. NC State has shown the ability to spread the ball around and receive production throughout their lineup as 6 different guys average 9+ PPG while Clemson really looks for Reed to generate most of their offense. While Clemson has the 66th ranked scoring defense in college basketball it won’t be enough to stop one of the top offenses in college basketball as NC State has shown the ability to score on the best of teams. NC State has also been fairly good ATS this season while Clemson has been the complete opposite, so I will follow the trend and continue to back the Wolfpack.

Betting trends for Clemson Tigers:

  • Clemson is 1-5 ATS after a loss this season.

Betting trends for North Carolina State Wolfpack:

  • NC State is 12-7 ATS as a home favorite since 2017.
