Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Marquette Golden Eagles vs Xavier Musketeers

The Xavier Musketeers are set to the Cintas Center for their 2nd consecutive home game where they will play host to the Marquette Golden Eagles in a Big East clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 2:00 PM. Xavier is going through a rebuilding stage after losing their head coach and a ton of production from last years team while Marquette is enjoying one of their best seasons in recent memory and look to be one of the top teams in the Big East with a 6-1 conference record.

Marquette Golden Eagles's Latest Performance :

Marquette has only made the NCAA Tournament 1 time since 2013 but the culture looks to be changing for the Golden Eagles in year 5 of the Steve Wojciechowski as they look to be one of the top teams in the Big East as well as in the country as they enter this game as the 12th ranked team in the country. Marquette comes into this game riding a 6-game win streak with their most recent victory coming against the DePaul Blue Demons 79-69. Junior guard Markus Howard is in contention for POY and reasonably so as he is averaging 24.3 PPG and 4.4 APG, and we saw the 5’11 superstar have a solid outing against DePaul with 23 points and 9 assists. Marquette is also led by a group of brothers as Sam Hauser averages 15.2 PPG and 6.9 RPG while Joey Hauser is averaging 10.6 PPG and 5.9 RPG. The brothers were once again able to team up and show out in their latest outing as junior Sam Hauser recorded 19 points and 6 rebounds while freshmen Joey Hauser contributed 14 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore forward Theo John had one of the biggest games of his young career as he was able to record a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds which is well above his season average of 6.7 PPG and 4.9 RPG. The one area that Marquette lacks is depth and we saw that on display against DePaul as they only recorded 7 bench points as Ed Morrow contributed 4 points which is right around his season average of 5.8 PPG.

Xavier Musketeers's Latest Performance :

The Xavier Musketeers have made the NCAA Tournament in 16 of the last 18 seasons but that looks to be at risk this year as 1st-year coach Travis Steele has lacked a big win and currently sit in the middle of the Big East with a 3-4 conference record. Xavier comes into this game looking to break a 2-game losing streak as they were unable to finish a comeback against the Providence Friars in their recent game as they lost 64-62. Xavier is led by a pair of sophomores as Naji Marshall is the leading scorer with 13.1 PPG as well as the 2nd leading rebounder with 7.3 RPG while Paul Scruggs is just behind Marshall in the production column with 13 PPG and 4.9 RPG. Scruggs was the leading scorer for the Musketeers in their latest game as he was able to record 14 points while Marshall was kept in check as he was only able to contribute 9 points. Junior forward Tyrique Jones is the leading rebounder for Xavier as he averages 7.4 RPG while contributing 10.8 PPG, and he was able to hit that mark against Providence with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Senior guard Kyle Castlin was able to make his impact felt on the boards as he recorded 10 rebounds which is well above his season average of 3.6 RPG. The Musketeers have moved junior guard Quentin Goodin to the bench since returning from injury and although he didn’t have a big outing against Providence he has still be an impact this season as he averages 12.1 PPG and 5 APG.

Against The Spread Selection: Marquette Golden Eagles*

My reason for the pick :

Marquette’s starting 5 has continued to impress through the early portion of Big East play while the young Xavier Musketeers have yet to show promise in year 1 of the Travis Steele era. Markus Howard is as electric as a guard as we have seen over the past few years and I just don’t think Xavier has the star power to keep the potential POY in check. Marquette has been one of the top scoring teams in the nation and they are outscoring Xavier by 6 PPG, and given the fact that the Golden Eagles are on a 6-game win streak I trust them to continue their hot hand. The one area that Xavier could use to their advantage is outscoring the Marquette bench in the few minutes that Howard sits on the bench but I don’t see this happening as I think the Golden Eagles will stay on top for must of the game. Xavier has also been really bad ATS this season while Marquette has been fairly good.

Betting trends for Marquette Golden Eagles:

  • Marquette is 5-2 ATS in Big East games this season.

Betting trends for Xavier Musketeers:

  • Xavier is 1-3-1 ATS as an underdog this season.
