Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Northwestern Wildcats vs Wisconsin Badgers

The Wisconsin Badgers are set to return home to the Kohl Center after playing on the road in their latest outing and they will play host to the Northwestern Wildcats in a Big Ten clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 2:15 PM. Northwestern has struggled through the early portion of conference play as they are 3-5 while the Badgers are playing good basketball as of recent as they have a 2-game win streak and sit 5th in the Big Ten.

Northwestern Wildcats's Latest Performance :

Northwestern is still trying to rebuild this program after 118 years of only 1 postseason appearance and it has shown during the 2018-2019 season as the young Wildcats are 3-5 in conference play which is not good enough in a deep conference like the Big Ten. To Northwestern’s credit, they have picked up their play as of recent as they come into this game looking to expand on a 2-game win streak with their most recent win coming against the talented Indiana Hoosiers 73-66. The leading scorer for the Wildcats this season has been senior forward Vic Law as he comes into this game averaging 16.3 PPG and 6.6 RPG, but he fell just short of that mark against Indiana as he only contributed 11 points and 7 rebounds. Having the biggest outing for the Wildcats was junior forward Aaron Falzon as he was able to come off the bench and go 6 for 7 from 3-point land to give him a total of 21 points, Falzon is only averaging 6.8 PPG. The leading rebounder for the Wildcats is senior Derek Pardon as he is averaging 14.2 PPG and 7.6 RPG, and he had a fairly productive game against the Hoosiers as he totaled 17 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore guard Anthony Gaines played one of the better games of his season as he had an all-around game with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. The one area that the Wildcats would like to see improved is their rebounding as they were outrebounded against the Hoosiers 44-29.

Wisconsin Badgers's Latest Performance :

The Wisconsin Badgers were in dire need of a good season after having their first losing season since 1997-1998 last year, and they have responded as they currently sit in the top half of the conference with a 5-3 record and look like a sleeper team in the Big Ten. The Badgers come into this game riding a 2-game win streak as they were most recently able to win on the road against the Illinois Fighting Illini 72-60. The Badgers have been led all season by senior forward Ethan Happ as he is averaging 19.2 PPG and 10.3 RPG which puts him in contention for Big Ten POY. The Fighting Illini made it the main focus of their gameplan to contain Happ and they did a successful job as he was held to only 9 points but the veteran was still able to make his impact felt with 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Having the biggest outing for the Badgers in this game was sophomore forward Nathan Reuvers as he was able to record a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds which is well above his season average of 8.9 PPG and 3.3 RPG. Sophomore guard D’Mitrik Trice is the top guy in the backcourt for the Badgers as he is averaging 14 PPG, and he was able to beat that mark against Illinois as he contributed 16 points. Wisconsin isn’t normally known for their 3-point shooting but they were able to shoot for 50% from behind the arc in their latest outing. The one area that Greg Gard would like to see improved moving forward is his bench production as his 2nd unit only contributed 3 points in the win.

Against The Spread Selection: Wisconsin Badgers

My reason for the pick :

Both teams are coming into this game riding 2 game win streaks but Wisconsin is the far superior team and it will show in this one as Madison, Wisconsin is one of the toughest places to play in the country, just ask the former #1 team in Michigan. Wisconsin has one of the top forwards in the nation in Ethan Happ and while the Wildcats have some solid forwards it just won’t be enough to stop the potential D1 POY. Both teams have great defenses as they both rank inside the top 30 in points allowed but Wisconsin is way better on the offensive side of the court and they will only play better on their home court. The one way Northwestern can take advantage of the Badgers is to have yet another big game from their bench but they will be up against a tough test in this one. Take the Badgers to win and continue climbing up the Big Ten standings.
