Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Syracuse Orange vs Virginia Tech Hokies

The Virginia Tech Hokies are set to return home to Cassell Coliseum after playing on the road in their latest outing and they will play host to the Syracuse Orange in an ACC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 8:00 PM. Virginia Tech has struggled against ranked teams in ACC play but still rank inside the top 10 while Syracuse has been a pleasant surprise as they have stormed out to a 5-1 ACC record with impressive wins already on their resume.

Syracuse Orange's Latest Performance :

Syracuse is always a sure bet to be competitive in the ACC as long as Jim Boeheim is the coach and they once again look to be a top team in the conference as they already beat the #1 Duke Blue Devils on the road as well as have a 5-1 record in conference play. The Orange come into this game looking to build on their 3 game win streak as they were most recently able to win at home against the Miami Hurricanes 73-53. Junior forward Elijah Hughes was dialed in for the Orange as he went 6 for 9 from three-point land which contributed to a 23-point outing, Hughes is the 2nd leading scorer for Syracuse as he averages 14.9 PPG. The leading scorer on the season for the Orange has been junior guard Tyus Battle as he averages 18.2 PPG, and while he was only able to find 10 points against Miami he made his impact elsewhere in the game as he had 9 assists and 6 rebounds. One guy the Orange would like to get going moving forward is sophomore forward Oshae Brissett as he has been inconsistent this season and his outing against the Hurricanes was an example of that as he went 2 for 8 from the field and only compiled 3 rebounds which is well below his season average of 13.8 PPG and 7.9 RPG. Syracuse was outrebounded by Miami 39-28 which is a consequence for playing zone defense, but the scheme is still one of the best in the nation as they hold opponents to 63.4 PPG. Coach Boeheim’s son Buddy was a key contributor in the win over Miami as the freshman recorded 12 points off the bench.

Virginia Tech Hokies's Latest Performance :

Virginia Tech has never made 3 consecutive appearances to the NCAA Tournament but Buzz Williams has completely turned around this program as they aren’t only a sure lock to make a 3rd straight appearances but they also have potential to be a top 4 seed which has never been done in program history. Virginia Tech comes into this game looking to forget about their recent outing as they were stomped on the road against UNC 103-82. The leading scorer on the season for the Hokies is sophomore guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker as he is averaging 18.3 PPG, and he was able to eclipse that mark against the Tar Heels with 19 points as he connected on 5 three-pointers. Junior forward Kerry Blackshear Jr. was able to have a huge game down low for the Hokies as he recorded a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds, Blackshear Jr. enters this game as the leading rebounder for Virginia Tech as he averages 6.4 RPG. Senior guard Justin Robinson is the top assists guy for Buzz Williams and company as he averages 5.4 APG and he was once again able to have a solid game against UNC with 17 points and 6 rebounds. The one knock on the Hokies this season is the fact that they have a thin bench and we saw that on display against UNC as they played 2 guys off the bench and received a total of 5 bench points. We saw that play a role in the way Virginia Tech plays defense as Blackshear Jr. and Robinson were dealing with 4 fouls which made them less aggressive in the zone defense.

Against The Spread Selection: Virginia Tech Hokies

My reason for the pick :

While both teams have been good this season I tend to back the home team in conference games as they usually fall in their favor and to mix in the fact that Virginia Tech was just embarrassed on ESPN I feel as this experienced team is due for a beatdown. Both teams play great defense but Virginia Tech is slightly better on that end and after giving up 100+ points to UNC, Buzz Williams will make an emphasis on defending and they should have no problem against the 226th ranked scoring offense. Blackshear Jr. is one of the top forwards in the ACC and he is rebounding at a high-rate which means the 2nd chance opportunities will be there against the Syracuse zone. Virginia Tech is a perfect 10-0 at home this season and I think they continue that streak in this one.
