Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Duke Blue Devils vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are set to return home to the Joyce Center for their 2nd consecutive home game where they will play host to the Duke Blue Devils in an ACC clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 7:00 PM. Notre Dame has struggled more than any team in the ACC as they are 1-6 in conference play while Duke is one of the best teams in the nation as they are ranked 2nd in the nation with a 6-1 ACC record.

Duke Blue Devils's Latest Performance :

The Duke Blue Devils aren’t only the best team in the ACC but also are one of the top in the nation as they come into this game as the 2nd ranked team in the AP Poll, and after slipping up a few games back they have responded with 3 straight wins. The Blue Devils continued their dominance against ACC teams with a 66-53 blowout win over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets this past Saturday. Freshmen R.J. Barrett has been the top Blue Devil this season as he comes into this game averaging 23.9 PPG and 6.7 RPG, and he was able to make his impact felt on this game with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Zion Williamson is on the top of many GM’s draft boards for the upcoming draft and reasonably so as he is averaging just shy of a double-double with 21.7 PPG and 9.3 RPG, Williamson was able to have a big game himself against Georgia Tech as he had 22 points and 7 rebounds. Coach Krzyzewski would like to see more consistency out of his other top freshmen as Cam Reddish has struggled this season and we saw that on display in their latest game as he went 1 for 11 from the field. The Blue Devils did receive a vital piece back as freshmen PG Tre Jones returned after missing the previous 2 games which is a big addition considering he averages 8.1 PPG and 5.7 APG. Duke was able to show a flaw against Georgia Tech that they would like to improve down the stretch of ACC play as they went 2 for 21 from behind the arc which could be problematic against a top team like Virginia or UNC.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish's Latest Performance :

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are on track to miss their 2nd consecutive NCAA Tournament which is an unusual feat for this program as the last time they missed out on consecutive appearances was back during the 2003-2005 seasons. Notre Dame comes into this game looking to play spoiler as well as break a 4 game losing streak as they were unable to beat the Virginia Cavaliers in their recent game. Junior forward John Mooney has been the top player for the Fighting Irish as he comes into this game averaging a double-double with 14.4 PPG and 10.8 RPG, and he was able to show that against Virginia as he shot 3 for 4 from 3 to contribute to a 15-point and 10 rebound performance. Outside of Mooney Notre Dame did not have a scorer record more than 9 points which has been a common problem throughout the season. Junior guard Temple Gibbs and sophomore D.J. Harvey were top recruits in the backcourt for the Fighting Irish and while they both average double-figures in the scoring department they were kept fairly silent in this one. The duo went a combined 1 for 11 from behind the arc while they combined for 18 points. The Fighting Irish have two freshmen who start as Nate Laszewski and Dane Goodwin average a combined 14.9 PPG, Goodwin went a perfect 2 for 2 from behind the arc which contributed to an 8-point game but Lazewski didn’t have the same success as he went 1 for 6 from behind the arc.

Against The Spread Selection: Duke Blue Devils

My reason for the pick :

Duke is on fire this season and with Tre Jones back in the starting lineup they have only gotten better and Notre Dame has been the complete opposite as they have regressed. Duke has a huge advantage despite being on the road as Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett are the best duo in the country and they are half of Duke’s 3rd ranked scoring offensive production. Duke will use their size and destroy the offensive boards like we saw against Georgia Tech and they Notre Dame won’t have an answer. Take the Blue Devils to win big on the road as Notre Dame doesn’t have the star power to match at home.

Betting trends for Duke Blue Devils:

  • Duke is 9-7 ATS after a win this season.

  • Notre Dame is 0-3 ATS as a home underdog this season.
