Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

St Joseph's Hawks vs Dayton Flyers

The Hawks of St Joseph’s will travel to University of Dayton Arena in Dayton, Ohio, to battle the Dayton Flyers on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time for an all-important Atlantic 10 Conference showdown. After a loss to the Patriots of George Mason University, Dayton was able to get back on the winning track as they picked up at win versus the Fordham Rams in their last outing as they jumped out early and often on the Rams in this contest while going  into the break up by 13 points en route to outscoring the visitors 42-32 in the second half for the victory.  Obi Toppin performed well in the contest as he provided a huge lift off the bench in scoring 19 points while pulling down nine rebounds. Leading scorer for the season for the Flyers in Josh Cunningham also went 6-10 from the floor while ending with 15 points along with 11 rebounds.

On the other hand, the Hawks have lost two of their last three games along with seven of their last 10, overall, as they were not able to pick up the victory on the road vs the Pennsylvania Quakers as the Hawks were certainly able to win the rebounding battle by 43-34 margin for the game, however, only shot 43% from the floor on the night while converting on just three attempts from long range. On the other hand, the defense showed up early and often throughout the game as they allowed just 40% shooting to the Quakers, yet the home team was able to convert on 14 3-pointers, which essentially allowed them to pull out the hard-fought victory in the end.

St Joseph's Hawks's Latest Performance :

The Hawks of Saint Joseph have dropped their last four road outings to where their offense only posted an average of 65 points per outing.  On the other hand, the defense has allowed opponents to average 73 points during this time, with the Quakers of Pennsylvania posting 78 points in their  last road outing.   The defense for the Hawks, which is been the saving grace for the season, allowed just 42% shooting for Pennsylvania in the contest and despite allowing 14 3-pointers on the night for the home team,  St Joseph’s was able to heavily outrebound the Quakers in this contest, thus allowing them to remain in the game for quite some time.

Nonetheless, the Hawks shot just 40% from the floor while connecting on only three of 24 three-point attempts, thus signaling the death knell.  Bryce Washington along with AJ Brodeur lead Pennsylvania with 23 and 20 points respectively. On the other hand, Charlie Brown Jr., despite going 1-8 from three-point range, finished with 27 points as he went 11-23 from the floor in defeat.  Jared Bynum along with Chris Clover ended with 14 points each as well for Saint Joseph’s as they have lost six of their last 10 games, overall, along with two of their last three.

In all, if Saint Joseph is not able to improve upon their offensive efficiencies, they will certainly struggle in this contest versus the Dayton Flyers.  As stated, Dayton will be looking to atone from their most recent home loss versus the Patriots of George Mason and are winners of six of their last seven home games, overall, to where they prevented opponents from reaching the 70-point mark in four of those six outings.

Dayton Flyers's Latest Performance :

The Dayton Flyers are right in the thick of things within the Atlantic 10 Conference as they are not only winners of eight of their last 10 games, overall, but, are currently 5-2 in the conference. Nonetheless, they have exchanged wins for losses in their last four outings as they were able to atone for a lost versus the George Mason Patriots, as stated, by picking up a victory over the Fordham Rams as Toppin came off the bench to provide 16 points for the team in the winning effort while Josh Cunningham recorded a double-double on the night with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Also,Jordan Davis along with David Kuchar chipped in 10 points each for the Flyers, who shot 51% on the night while heavily outrebounding their opposition throughout the contest.  Antwon Portley along with Nick Honor were the only starters in double digits for Fordham as they scored 10 points each while going a combined 8 – 29 from the floor in the loss.

In their last two losses, Dayton has come a bit short on the offensive end while their defense has given up a few extra buckets than usual in defeats to George Mason along with Virginia Commonwealth, as both losses were by a combined nine points. Nonetheless, Dayton will certainly look to lead with their defense in this contest as they will be facing a Saint Joseph’s Hawks squad that is only shooting 40% from the floor as a team on a nightly basis.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Look for this to be a very interesting Atlantic 10 Conference matchup as the Saint Joseph’s Hawks will be looking to get back on the right track with a much-needed road victory versus the Dayton Flyers. Dayton, on the other hand, will be looking to also pick up yet another conference victory in which to stay relevant within the  conference as well. In all, one can expect both teams to be looking to push the pace while their defenses, which have been solid for the most part recently, look to also have another solid night versus offenses have truly been awful at times.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick:   Dayton Flyers

My reason for the pick :

I will back Dayton in this contest as I happen to feel that they are not only the better team at this moment, but, have also been dominant on their home court as well. As stated, St Joseph are losers of their last four road games to where their offense was essentially nonexistent in each outing.  With that being said, look for Dayton to neutralize this offense for the Hawks yet again while picking up some transition buckets throughout the contest in which to pull away while picking up the conference win. On the other hand, one should look for the defenses to have solid nights as they will take center stage throughout.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

I will back the under in this contest, particularly when I consider the types of defenses that will be taking the floor on this night. Furthermore, with the way in which the offenses have been up and down lately, one can certainly expect this to be a highly competitive yet low-scoring contest to where momentum will switch from one team to the next periodically.

Betting trends for St Joseph's Hawks:

  • The Hawks are 3-7 against the spread in last 10 games
The under is 7-3 in Hawks last 10 games

Betting trends for Dayton Flyers:

  • The Flyers are 2-4 against the spread in last 6 games
The over is 6 – 4 in Flyers last 10 games
