Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Wisconsin Badgers vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers are set to return to the Pinnacle Bank Arena for their 2nd consecutive home game where they will play host to the Wisconsin Badgers in a Big Ten clash, the opening tipoff is slated for 8:00 PM. Wisconsin has been impressive through the early portion of Big Ten play as they have stormed out to a 6-3 record while Nebraska has struggled this season as they have lost 3 consecutive games which has put them at 3-6 in conference play.

Wisconsin Badgers's Latest Performance :

The Wisconsin Badgers have responded from missing out on the NCAA Tournament last season with a 6-3 Big Ten record which has them in 5th place of arguably the deepest conference in basketball. Wisconsin was able to extend their win streak to 3 games after they were able to use their top defense to hold the Northwestern Wildcats to 46 points this past Saturday. Normally the Badgers run their offense through senior forward Ethan Happ who comes into this game averaging 18.9 PPG, 10.4 RPG, and 5.2 APG, but he wasn’t the top producer for Wisconsin despite his triple-double (13 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists). The backcourt came up huge for the Badgers as the sophomore duo of Brad Davidson and D’Mitrik Trice delivered 18 points apiece. Trice is the 2nd leading scorer for the Badgers as he comes into this game averaging 14.2 PPG and he was able to have a solid game from behind the arc as he connected on 4 of his 6 three-point attempts. Davidson was able to show his versatility against the Wildcats as he didn’t only record 18 points but he was also solid on the boards as he contributed 6 rebounds, Davidson comes into this game averaging 10.7 PPG and 3.1 RPG. The Wisconsin top defense played very well against Northwestern as they held the Wildcats to 30% from the field as well as forced 13 turnovers, and Ethan Happ was a huge part of that as he contributed 2 steals and 2 blocks.

Nebraska Cornhuskers's Latest Performance :

There were high hopes for the Nebraska Cornhuskers coming into the season as they have an experienced group of guys who led this program to the Big Ten championship last season but they have not delivered those results as they are 3-6 in Big Ten play. Nebraska comes into this game looking to break a 3-game losing streak after they lost at home this past Saturday against the Ohio State Buckeyes 70-60. The Cornhuskers will have to the rest of the season without their 2nd leading scorer as senior forward Isaac Copeland Jr. suffered a season-ending knee injury, Copeland has been enjoying a fairly solid season as he comes into this game averaging 14 PPG and 5.4 RPG. The leading scorer on the season for Nebraska has been the former Miami transfer in James Palmer Jr. as he averages 19.4 PPG and 4.4 RPG, and he was able to hit that mark against Ohio State as he delivered 19 points on a 7 for 17 shooting day. Senior gaurd Glynn Watson Jr. was able to step up in the absence of Copeland and deliver 18 points which is well above his season average of 13.5 PPG. The Cornhuskers will look to get junior forward Isaiah Roby more involved as the talented 6’8 Illinois native is averaging 10.5 PPG and 6.7 RPG but they will need to keep him out of foul trouble as he fouled out against the Buckeyes after recording 7 points and 9 rebounds. Senior forward Tanner Borchardt may be promoted to the starting lineup for Copeland Jr. and he showed his abilities on the boards against Ohio State as he had 8 rebounds off the bench.

Against The Spread Selection: Wisconsin Badgers

My reason for the pick :

This would be a spot to back the Cornhuskers but with the injury to Copeland Jr. I see this team struggling to find a consistent 2nd scorer and considering this is the 1st game without him they will still be looking for answers. Copeland Jr. was also a solid defender down low for the Cornhuskers and that would be a big asset in this game considering the Badgers play through Ethan Happ but without him, they will be forced to put the foul-prone Isaiah Roby on him which could be problematic if he gets in foul trouble. Wisconsin will be a dangerous team if they can continue to receive production from their backcourt and I think the young duo of Trice and Davidson use their big game against Northwestern as a confidence booster and start giving the Badgers consistent outings. Take the Badgers on the road.
