Over/Under 5.5 Wins vs Boston College Eagles

The Boston College Eagles are fired up about taking the field in 2018 as they aren’t only coming off an impressive season in 2017 but Steve Addazio has one of the most talented teams in his first 6 seasons. The one downfall for Boston College is the fact that they reside in the ACC Atlantic which is one of the best divisions in baseball, but lucky for them they have a good coach who has made winning a habit in Chesnut Ridge. Addazio will be looking to make his 5th bowl game in as many as 6 seasons this upcoming year. Boston College was able to pull off some big-time wins in 2017 as they beat Lousiville, Florida State, and Virginia which showed the direction this program was heading. Residing in the ACC Atlantic doesn’t only put a damper on your chances to make the ACC title game but also on the recruiting trail. Addazio struggled to land some of the top recruits in the nation as Boston College ranked last in the ACC in terms of recruiting classes, but he was able to keep a 4-star offensive linemen in the state which will help grow an already good o-line. As it always isn’t about the top recruits and the flashy facilities but rather the heart and effort of the players we should see a step forward from Addazio’s 2017 7-6 record.

Over/Under 5.5 Wins's Latest Performance :

Boston College ended the 2017 regular season with a 7-5 record but they lost the Pinstripe Bowl against the Iowa Hawkeyes 27-20. Given the fact that there is uncertainty at the QB position oddsmakers have set the over/under at 5.5 wins which would also determine if the Eagles will be bowl eligible for the 3rd straight season.

ACC Tested

As we stated Boston College is stuck in a really good division which sums up to yearly matchups against the likes of Florida State and Clemson but this year they will have to see them in back to back weeks. Not only does Boston College have to go against Clemson and Florida State in consecutive weeks they have to go against some of the best teams in the ACC Coastal division as they will see Miami and Virginia Tech before hosting Clemson on 11/10. Boston College has a really good chance at sweeping their non-conference schedule as they will host UMass, Holy Cross, and Temple as well as travel to Purdue. Boston College was able to snag 4 wins in ACC play last season and if they are able to match that performance from last year they could find themselves around the 8 win mark.

Boston College Eagles's Latest Performance :

Boston College may be missing some pieces from their underrated 2017 defense but they return one of the best running backs in the nation in AJ Dillon who could put himself in some early Heisman talks. AJ Dillon will take a step forward in his second season after he posted a 1589 yard and 14 TD year back in his freshmen season. Boston College doesn’t run the new air-raid offense as they have taken it old school with some hard nose pound the football but they still need to figure out the quarterback position. Anthony Brown saw most of the time as the starting QB back in 2017 but he wasn’t anything amazing as he threw for 9 interceptions compared to his 11 TDs. Although Brown holds a foot up in the QB battle due to experience a name to watch for this season will be true freshmen John Langan who chose BC over Syracuse, Temple, and Rutgers. Whoever wins the QB battle will be in a good position considering the fact that Boston College returns their top 4 receivers. Tommy Sweeny is a big target at TE as he stands at 6’5 but he is also the best pass catcher for Boston College as he led the team last season with 512 yards and 4 TDs. Defensively the Eagles will have to rely on their front 7 who lost a first-round caliber player in Harold Landry but return a potential 1st rounder in Zach Allen. Allen was really good in his junior season as he was 1 of 2 players to crack the 100 tackle mark as well as the TFL leader with 15.5. The linebackers should also be in good shape as they will be returning every starter as well as adding guys back who missed games in 2017.

Player To Watch

Connor Strachan LB, SR.

As I stated the linebacker core is the best off group as they return all of their starters from their stingy 2017 defense but the one guy that is often forgotten for this Boston College defense is veteran Connor Strachan who missed the 2017 season with a knee injury. Strachan is a really good linebacker as he led the Eagles in tackles back in 2016 with 80. This addition back to the defense will make this team that much scarier, but I am more interested in seeing how the senior will perform after his injury. If Strachan could return back to his 2016 form he could be a late-round snag in the 2019 draft so I will be interested in watching him this season.

My reason for the pick :

Boston College has one of their best teams in the Addazio era and something that we have learned about this Eagles team is the fact that they are well coached. Boston College has been able to make a bowl game in 4 of their last 5 seasons even if their teams aren’t stacked which has me thinking that the Eagles should be able to match that again with a more experienced team. As I stated Boston College has a really tough stretch against some of the best teams in the ACC but with them having home matchups against Miami and Clemson I wouldn’t be surprised to see an upset in one of those games. Boston College even has a chance to go on the road and beat a solid Purdue team at the beginning of the season depending how their air game follows their rush game. Take BC over the 5.5 win total as they reach another bowl game.
