Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Over/Under 10.5 Wins vs Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State Buckeyes have become one of the few powerhouses in college football as they are always a contender for a national championship but after missing the CFB playoff’s last season we should expect the Buckeyes to return back to contender status this year. Ohio State may have been successful in the eyes of many college football fans as they won both the Big Ten championship and the Cotton Bowl but Urban Meyer expects more out of this program. Ohio State will take the field in 2018 with a new look at the quarterback position after the departure of their 4-year starter but don’t think Meyer doesn’t have options to choose from as he has an abundance of talent at that position. Whoever is taking snaps for the Buckeyes will benefit from a great rushing attack as well as a bunch of talented pass catchers. The Buckeyes have been one of the top teams in college football in terms of getting after the quarterback and expect nothing less this season as the defensive front should be as stout as years past. Urban Meyer has the necessary tools to lure in the big recruit names as Ohio State is a well-established program as well as host some of the best facilities in all of college football. Meyer was one of the best in the nation last season in terms of recruiting as he lured in the #2 class in all of college football. Urban Meyer was able to sign three 5-star recruits with his biggest signing being the #1 DT in the nation in Taron Vincent who will contribute to the depth of an already stacked defensive line.

Over/Under 10.5 Wins 's Latest Performance :

Urban Meyer has yet to win less than 11 games in his 6 seasons as the head man in Colombus, Ohio as he has been one of the most successful coaches in college football. Ohio State lost their 4-year starter at arguably the most important position but they return a ton of skill-position players and a scary good defensive line. Oddsmakers feel like the QB position won’t be much of a factor as they have set the over/under at 10.5 wins.

Road Big Ten= Tough

Ohio State has the advantage of opening their season against Oregon State and Rutgers, two programs who arguably are the worst out of any of the big conference school. Ohio State will use these games as a warmup for their neutral site matchup against TCU on 9/15 which could be a tough game for the Buckeyes. Unfortunately, Ohio State will have to play 2 of their tougher opponents on the road as they will travel to Penn State on 9/29 and then play at Michigan State on 11/10. Ohio State will have to make sure they don’t slip up against Indiana, Minnesota, or Nebraska all teams who will be looking for victories on the Buckeyes turf. The best part of the Buckeyes schedule is the fact that they get to host their most hated rival at home in the Michigan Wolverines.

Ohio State Buckeyes's Latest Performance :

Most teams would be scratching their head with the loss of their 4-year starter at the quarterback position but Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes have a next guy up mentality as well as a good slate of QBs. Ohio State will be missing out on the services of J.T. Barrett who had combined for 3851 yards and 47 TDs in 2017 but his backup is famously known for his heroics in Barrett’s exit during the Michigan game last season. Dwayne Haskins is the slated starter for Urban Meyer and he had a really solid season last year in the opportunities he was given as he completed 70.2% of his throws as well as 4 touchdowns through the air. The ground game should once again be dangerous in 2018 as the Buckeyes return both J.K. Dobbins (1403 yards & 7 TDs) and Mike Weber (626 yards & 10 TDs) who were one of the best 1-2 punches in college football last season. Weber was the slated starter for all of last season but Dobbins exploded in his freshman season to win over the majority of the carries, expect the storyline to be similar once again. Ohio State didn’t have one guy shoulder most of the load at the wide receiver position but rather an abundance of guys as there were over 7 guys with 300 yards or more. Johnnie Dixon was the most explosive guy for the Buckeyes last season as the senior had 18 catches for 422 yards and a team-high 8 touchdowns, expect him and Terry McLaurin to have big seasons in their last go around. Ohio State has made their defensive backfield look a lot better than they really are as the defensive line is a force in making sure opposing QBs are not comfortable. Nick Bosa was the leader of this defensive line last year as the junior led the team with 16 TFL and 8.5 sacks and he is joined by former 5-star recruit, Chris Young. The linebacker will suffer as there is not much depth behind Tuf Borland, expect freshman Teradja Mitchell to step into some position battles during fall camp. Jordan Fuller is one of the best guys to return back to the Buckeyes secondary as the junior is coming off a stout season. Fuller is an all-around safety as he can play both the run and the pass effectively and that was apparent last season as he had 62 tackles and 2 interceptions which were both good enough for 2nd best on the team.

Player To Watch

Dwayne Haskins, QB, RS Soph.

Ohio State has essentially become QBU as they have had some great quarterbacks come through and it doesn’t look like that phrase is going away anytime soon as Dwayne Haskins can be a great one as well. Haskins is a much different QB than Barrett as he is more of a pro-style guy rather than a dual-threat but he runs the zone-read effectively which is the bread and butter of Urban Meyer’s offense. Haskins was able to lead the Buckeyes to a victory in arguably their biggest game of the season (Michigan) and looked like a veteran moving the offense. Haskins can have a 3000+ yard year this season given the weapons around him so he is my player to watch this season as he could be a dark horse Heisman candidate.

My reason for the pick :

Urban Meyer is one of the best coaches of all-time as he has led both Florida and Ohio State to national championships and we should expect nothing less this season as the Buckeyes are a prime candidate to make their 3rd college football playoff. People are concerned about Haskins and the QB position but the redshirt sophomore has shown no signs of concern as he has been one of the best-kept secrets for Meyer and the Buckeyes. Ohio State is neck to neck in terms of defensive fronts but Ohio State has the stats to back it up as they were the top team in the nation last year in TFLs and I would expect nothing less out of the Buckeyes this year. Ohio State has potential to go undefeated as they may be able to sneak out a win @ Penn State. Ride the over 10.5 wins.
