Abilene Christian Wildcats vs Baylor Bears
The Abilene Christian University Wildcats will visit McLane Stadium in Waco, Texas, on Saturday, 9-1-2018, to take on the Baylor Bears in week 1 college football action beginning at 8 pm EST. The Wildcats will be looking to improve upon a 2-9 season while also allowing their QB to become the tip of the spear in bringing about a winning attitude in Abilene, Texas. While they would lose some talent on both sides of the ball, the wildcats are happy to be playing Division I opponent Baylor in week 1. In fact, Coach Adam Dorrel even thinks that they may have a great chance at the upset, recalling that they may be playing the Bears at a great time. Nonetheless, they will need to minimize mistakes as well as step up their play in the trenches to even have a chance at keeping this game close. The Baylor Bears hope to certainly improve from their 2017 campaign as they would end at 1-11. Matt Rhule’s team will hope to use experience from its remaining skilled positions in which to promote better QB play in 2018. In all, the Bears have decent experience and talent and will be looking to put this talent into the best position possible to pick up some win early in the season to gain some momentum going into conference play, to where they were 1-8 in 2017. This will be the 1st ever meeting amongst these two teams.
Abilene Christian Wildcats's Latest Performance :
Luke Anthony will return under center for the Wildcats in 2018 while Billy McCray and Tracy Adams will be looked upon to solidify things within the backfield for Abilene Christian. Despite being hit hard by graduation, their receiving corps will look to increase its overall production in 2018 as Senior Kalin Sadler along with Juniors Torin justice and Chase Coakley will look to provide a spark for the receiving corps this year as the goal will be to prevent Anthony from relying too much on his arm early on. In all, the goal will be to utilize the weapons around him in which to better develop the passing game over time.
Defensively, the Wildcats will be led by Senior A.J. Greathouse, Quincy Dunn, Bryce Bakarini, and Jeremiah Chambers will all competing for time at the linebacker spot early on while Senior Jamal Mack along with Junior Adonis Davis while man the CB positions for the Wildcats. Bolu Onifade will also compete for the safety position as he will look to provide some experience and additional talent for the defensive secondary.
Baylor Bears's Latest Performance :
While taking from the positives from last season (which was not many), the Bears hope that Sophomore Charlie Brewer (1562 yards, 11 TD’s, 4 INT’s) will step up even more in his second season to allow the Bears to become much more of the offensive team they were in recent past. He will certainly have a stable of promising backs in which to hand the ball off to such as Sophomore Tresten Ebner (121 yards, 23 rushes, 2 TD’s), Senior Terrance Williams (255 yards, 73 attempts, 1 TD), JaMychal Hasty (314 yards, 76 rushes, 1 TD), along with Sophomore John Lovett (445 yards, 98 rushes, 5 TD’s). They would also be hit hard by graduation as it relates to their receiving corps, however, Denzel Mims (1087 yards, 61 receptions, 8 TD’s) will be counted on to be the leader of a young, yet, potentially talented receiver’s group.
Defensively, the Bears will count on Ira Lewis (34 tackles, 11.5 TFL, 5.5 sacks) to man the trenches up front while LB Jordan Williams (38 tackles, 3 TFL) along with Clay Johnston (54 tackles, 9 TFL) will lead the defense in 2018. Sophomore Harrison Hand (42 tackles) along with Senior Verkedric Vaughns (42 tackles) will round out the defensive secondary.
How Abilene Christian Wildcats & Baylor Bears Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
The Baylor Bears look to forget the horrors of 2017 by picking up a win in week 1 while allowing the victory to be a confidence booster moving forward. Baylor has lost talent both sides of the ball in recent years and have not fully recovered, particularly on the offensive end. Nonetheless, they will look to take advantage of the weapons that they now possess in an effort to exploit the spotty D for the Wildcats who, in all fairness, will be severely over-matched as the final score would attest.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Baylor Bears
My reason for the pick :
With the awful season that Baylor had last year, it would come as no surprise that they would approach this game from a standpoint that they will need to perform consistently in front of their home crowd in which to gain some momentum early in the season. With that being said, they are facing an Abilene Christian team that will be looking forward to the challenge, yet, will not possess the types of talent that will allow them to keep this game close. In all, I will take the Bears to perform outstanding against this Wildcats team that will find that they are simply outmanned and outmatched against a more superior opponent.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over
My reason for the prediction :
Despite the Bears losing some talent from within both the running along with the passing attack, I will expect them to run wild against the Wildcats on Saturday. In other words, the Bears will certainly test the resolve of Abilene Christian early and often. As a result, I happen to believe that they will certainly be successful in their efforts throughout. It is for this reason that I will side with the over in this contest as Baylor will make easy work of their week 1 opponent while picking up a huge confidence booster moving forward.
