Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

BYU Cougars vs Arizona Wildcats

The BYU Cougars will travel to Tucson, Arizona, to take on the Arizona Wildcats on Saturday, 9-1-2018, at Arizona Stadium beginning at 10:45 pm EST in week 1 college football action.  The Wildcats will look for much improvement from their 7-6 season in 2017 as they would lose 4 of their last 5 games to limp into the postseason where they would fall to the Purdue Boilermakers in the Foster Farms Bowl on 12-27-2017 by a score of 38-35.  This year, they seek to maintain their consistency not only in beginning the season strong, but, finishing it up in much the same way.  The Cougars, on the other hand, will look to improve upon their dismal 4-9 record to where they would drop 7 of their last 10 games as they would miss the postseason, altogether.  In 2018, Coach Kalani Sataki will look to maintain his players focus in improving both on offense and defense, thus allowing them better opportunities in which to finish out games while also finishing out the season on a strong note.  The last matchup amongst these two teams were on 9-2-2016 where the Cougars would pick up the 18-16 win at home to where they would cover the spread while the total would go under the set total being set at 63.5 points.

BYU Cougars's Latest Performance :

Tyler Mangum (1540 yards, 8 TD’s, 9 INT’s) will return as the number 1 signal caller for the Cougars in 2018. After a subpar year, he will certainly look for more consistency this year as he will be joined by Squally Canada (710 yards, 120 rushes, 6 TD’s) along with Ula Tolutau (303 yards, 72 attempts, 2 TD’s), who will each look to obtain more pivotal roles within the offense.  Sophomore TE Matt Bushman (520 yards, 49 receptions, 3 TD’s) along with Aleva Hifo (437 yards, 37 receptions, 2 TD’s) will also look to establish themselves as go to threats for the Cougars.  Finally, Junior Micah Simon (386 yards, 27 receptions, 3 TD’s) returns for BYU looking to improve from his breakout sophomore season in 2017.

Defensively, the cougars will return Senior Sione Takitaki on the defensive line as he would garner 79 total tackles last year along with 12.5 TFL.  Corbin Kaufusi (67 tackles, 7.5 TFL) will join Takitaki in the trenches as they each look to cause havoc on opposing offenses.  They also will return Seniors Adam Pulsipher (54 tackles) along with Biutch Pau’u (74 tackles) at the LB position while also possessing experience and talent at DB with Senior Zhane Anderson (61 tackles, 2 INT’s) along with Sophomore Dayan Ghanwoloku (58 tackles, 2 INT’s).

Arizona Wildcats's Latest Performance :

The Arizona Wildcats will certainly need the assistance of their Junior QB Khalil Tate (1591 yards, 1709 Attempts, 14 TD’s, 9 INT’s) in order to turn the tide in 2018.  They would lose some pieces to their running attack last year due to graduation, however, J.J Taylor (847 yards, 146 rushes, 5 TD’s) will return to lead the Cats on the ground while Nathan Tillford (121 yards, 13 rushes, 3 TD’s) will also look to become a more integral part of the running attack in 2018.  Finally, seniors Tony Ellison (598 yards, 37 receptions, 5 TD’s) and Shun Brown (573 yards, 43 receptions, 6 TD;s) will look to provide more leadership to the offense while being its go to receivers for the year.

Defensively, the Wildcats will be thin on the defensive front, however, their talent and youth should be enough in which to keep this team competitive in 2018.  Sophomore LB Tony Fields II (104 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 5 sacks) along with Colin Schooler 96 tackles, 13. 5 TL, 4 sacks) will be the leaders of the defense while Sophomores Scottie Young Jr (55 tackles) along with Lorenzo Burns (81 tackles) will lead the defensive secondary.  Also, Senior Demetrius Flannigan Fowles (81 tackles) will return at safety to where he would solidify himself as a solid contributor in 2017.

How BYU Cougars & Arizona Wildcats Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

This should be a very intriguing matchup in that you have an Arizona team looking to start the season off on a positive note after a lackluster season in 2017 while, on the other hand, you have a BYU team that was horrible last year, yet, will bring back their signal caller for his senior year.  While the Cats are the home favorites, I happen to think that each team will be focused and competitive throughout; However, will both defenses be able to stop anyone at all?  In my view, this will be a huge factor in not only what team wins, but, which team will take that step up in overall wins in 2018.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Arizona Wildcats -15

My reason for the pick :

I will give the edge to the Wildcats at home in week 1 simply due to the fact that despite Magnum returning as signal caller for he Cougars, he really struggled last year, for the most part.  With that being said, expect the Cats to get the pressure going early on in which to cerate opportunities for turnovers.  In all, I expect the UA offense to look much quicker and focused this year after a subpar campaign last year.  the Cougars will keep this game close for some time, however, the talent and speed at the skilled positions for the wildcats will eventually step up and take control of this contest.

Totals Selection: Pick: Over 60.5

My reason for the prediction :

I would really be tempted to take the under in this contest, however, you have a Pac-12 team versus an independent.  In other words, Arizona will certainly give up some points to the Cougars, however, BYU, who will contain a revamped D from last year, will be learning on the fly on how to win on the road as I can certainly see them allowing numerous opportunities to score throughout the game as well. in all, I will back the over of 60.5 in the end of what will be an offensive minded matchup between two teams looking to start the year on a positive (winning) note.
