Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Eastern Illinois Panthers vs Arkansas Razorbacks
The Eastern Illinois Panthers will travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to take on the Aransas Razorbacks at Donald W. Reynolds Memorial Stadium on Saturday, 9-1-2018, beginning at 4 pm EST. Eastern’s Coach Kim Dameron will look to improve upon their 6-5 record in 2017 as they would fail to make a bowl game. The Ohio Valley Conference Panthers would lose 3 of their last 4 games last year which essentially doomed their chances of making it to the postseason, however, they look for much better results this year. This will be their first matchup against the Razorbacks and will certainly look towards the challenge that they will present. The Arkansas Razorbacks would end their 2017 SEC season with a record of 4-8 while not making the postseason, of course. They would lose 6 of their last 8 games of the season last year, thus eliminating them from any postseason consideration; Nonetheless, this is a new year and Coach Brett Bielima will retool in which to put his team in a much better position in 2018.
Eastern Illinois Panthers's Latest Performance :
Eastern Illinois’ Scotty Gilky will get the start in week 1 for the Panthers as he will take the experience that he gained last year in making 5 starts and allow this to be a catalyst for his improved play in 2018. Behind him, Darshon McCullough (368 yards, 78 carries) will lead the running game while Junior Wide receiver matt Reyna will look to make strides in leading the receiving corps after a solid season at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana, Texas on 2017. Eastern hopes that his experience and leadership will certainly be a positive for a young Panthers squad.
Defensively, the Panthers will rely on junior college transfer Ryan Coleman to man the trenches while redshirt sophomore Aaron Woods will also look to get his fair share of snaps for Eastern this year as well. Senior linebacker Jareem Fleming will also look to step in and lead this defense while defensive tackle Taylor Shepard (15 tackles, 8 solo) will also provide senior leadership to what will also be a young defense.
Arkansas Razorbacks 's Latest Performance :
Sophomore Cole Kelly (1038 yards, 8 TD, 4 INT’s) will take the helm under center after Austin Allen departed due to graduation. He will have Junior running back Devwah Whaley (559, 1132 rushes, 7 TD’s) along with Chase Hayden (326 yards, 61 rushes, 4 TD’s) in the backfield to ease his transition. Sophomore Jordan Jones (401 yards, 21 catches, 3 TD’s) along with Junior Deon Stewart (404 yards, 33 catches, 3 TD’s) will lead the receiving corps for the Razorbacks in 2018. Junior TE Jonathan Nance (539 yards, 37 catches, 5 TS’s) will also be a pivotal price for the Razorbacks offense this year.
Defensively, Arkansas lost the bulk of their talent from the D-line, however, they continue to possess talent within the backend of the defense as Junior De’Jon Harris (115 tackles, 8.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks) along with Dre Greenlaw (103 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 1 sack) will man the linebacker spot for the Razorbacks. Santos Ramirez (63 tackles, 2 TFL) will lead the defensive secondary for Arkansas as the Senior will look to step up even more in his final year of eligibility.
How Eastern Illinois Panthers & Arkansas Razorbacks Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
This matchup may be interesting to some, yet, not to me. I happen to believe that this will be a huge mismatch for Eastern Illinois in that the Razorbacks will be looking to make amends for last season where they looked totally unlike the team they were built to be: A big, burly, run-smashing team that were effective at wearing teams down during the course of the game. While this was certainly not the case in 2017, I feel as though they will go back to basics to begin their 2018 campaign.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Arkansas Razorbacks
My reason for the pick :
While Eastern should be credited for going 6-5 last year, they will be no match for an Arkansas Razorbacks team that will be looking to atone for their lackluster season last year. I can expect the Razorbacks to get back to what they have been known to do well: Run the ball effectively while running the trenches for 4 quarters in which to wear teams down. With that being said, I will certainly ride the Arkansas Razorbacks to pick up a one-sided week 1 win on Saturday.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over
My reason for the prediction :
While there is not line for the total as of yet, I will expect the Razorbacks to really score at will in this matchup. Of course, Eastern will have some shots against an Arkansas defense that would get burned in the defensive backfield at will in 2017, I have a feeling that the Razorbacks will take control of this game early and will look unstoppable for much of the game. In all, take the over in this matchup as the Backs will certainly use this matchup as a tune up for what is to come in the SEC West.
