Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Monmouth Hawks vs Eastern Michigan Eagles

The Monmouth Hawks will travel to Rynearson Stadium in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles in week 1 college Football action on Friday night, 8-31-2018, beginning at 6:30 pm EST.  Eastern Michigan will look to improve upon their 5-7 record in 2017 as they would garner up a bit of momentum towards the end of the year when they would win 3 of their last 4 games down the stretch.  Things will not get any better as they would lose their 4-year signal caller in Brogan Roback to graduation; Nonetheless, they will look to incorporate a newer, younger QB onto the fray in which to continue to improve moving forward.  The Monmouth Hawks look to build upon a 9-3 season in 2017 to where they would lose to Northern Iowa in the first round of the FCS playoffs by a score of 46-7 on 11-25-2017.  In all, they possess a QB in place in Shawn Conner and various playmakers around him in which to build confidence in hopes of running the table during the regular season en route to yet another playoff run in 2018.  This will be the 1st meeting amongst these two teams.

Monmouth Hawks's Latest Performance :

Eastern Michigan will come into the season with Sophomore QB Isaac Stiebeling at the helm as he will also have won weapons around him in which to make the transition to starter much easier.  Senior RB Ian Eriksen (810 yards, 179 rushes, 8 TD’s) along with Shaq Vann (520 yards, 113 rushes, 3 TD’s) will be relied upon to lead the rushing attack in 2018.  On the other hand, receivers Blake Banham along with Breck Turner will look to increase their production from last year significantly due to the loss of experience at the receiving area of the offense.

Defensively, the Eagles will return Max Crosby (57 tackles, 16.5 TFL, 11 sacks) along with Jeremy Harris (45 tackles, 13 TFL, 6 sacks) to man the trenches while linebackers Kyle Rachwal (63 tackles, 5.5 TFL) will take charge within the middle of the defense.  The Eagles will also be experience in the secondary as Brody Hawkins (78 tackles, 4 TFL, 2 INT’s) along with Vince Calhoun (78 tackles) and Justin Moody (50 tackles) will round out the defensive unit for Eastern Michigan.

Eastern Michigan Eagles's Latest Performance :

Shawn O’Conner will take over the QB spot for Monmouth this year as he will be looking to replace Roback while also becoming an integral part of the offense.  Running backs Erik Zokouri along with Senior Devell Jones will be relied upon to add a sense of stability behind a young QB.  On the other hand, Seniors Reggie white Jr and Vinny Grasso will also be looking to become a more critical piece of the offensive production in 2018.  Sophomore Lonnie Hall will also look to step up from his receiver position in which to add another dimension to the Hawks offense.

Defensively, Monmouth would lose players with the d-line as well as from their linebacking corps, however, they return Senior Zack Talley at defensive tackle while DeJaun Cooper and Junior Evan Powell will man the linebacker spots for the Hawks.  Finally, DB’s Marcus Leslie along with Tymere Berry will add some leadership and experience to the defensive secondary.

How Monmouth Hawks & Eastern Michigan Eagles Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

Both these teams may indeed find it difficult to remain consistent this season as both are attempting to retool their offense as well as shore up various vulnerabilities that were caused due to the graduation of several players not only from with both d-lines, but, also from their linebacking corps and secondary.  In all, this will be a grind it out game between both that will also be interesting and exciting to see them go after one another in which to pick up an all-important win on Saturday.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Eastern Michigan

My reason for the pick :

Due to it being a home game for the Eagles, I would have to give them the nod in this matchup.  Both teams are n a rebuilding year as Monmouth really needs to develop talent around their young QB in which to allow him the ability to grow into the position.  On the other hand, Eastern Michigan will be replacing a 4-year starter and will certainly need to ensure that adequate talent is around their young QB to ensure that his workload is manageable coming out of the gate.  I will expect a competitive matchup in this contest with the Eagles pulling out a slim victory in week 1.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With both offenses on the rebuild, as stated, I do not see many points being scored on Friday night between these two squads.  In fact, I only see the Eagles scoring just enough to escape with a win.  while the line has not been published for this matchup, I will continue to back the under in this matchup on the strength of both offenses not really having an identity as of yet.  In other words, this game will certainly tell what type of team each of these squads will be moving forward.
