Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Northwestern State vs Texas A&M

The Northwestern state Demons will travel to Kyle Field in College Park, Texas, to battle the Texas A& M Aggies under the direction of Jimbo Fisher on Saturday, 8:30 pm EST.  The Demons of Northwestern State is a member of the Southland Conference that ended 2017 with a 4-7 record, yet, won 3 of their last 4 outings to end the season.  While much can be said for the way in which they ended last year, the fact is that the Demons must now figure out who will earn the QB spot which, coincidentally enough, are 2 freshmen and a sophomore who are active within the competition.  The Aggies of Texas A&M will enter the season with an entirely news slate in every since of the word with Fisher replacing Kevin Sumlin at the helm in College Station along with the Aggies looking to shake off the memories of a 7-6 season capped off by a 55-52 upset win by the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in the Belk Bowl on 12-29-2017.  This will be the first ever meeting amongst these two teams.

Northwestern State's Latest Performance :

Jimbo Fisher left the Noles for College Station and, from the looks of it, he will inherit the QB controversy of the best type with two hungry individuals with past experience in Kellen Mond (1375 yards, 8 TD’s 6 INT’s) along with Nick Starkel (1793 yards, 14 TD’s, 6 INT’s) will fight to the end to earn the right of commanding an offense who will not have to worry about inexperience in the backfield as Teayvion Williams (798 yards, 173 rushes, 8 TD’s) along with Kendall Bussey (239 yards, 47 rushes, 1 TD) will receive the bulk of the carries for 2018.  The Aggies will also have some playmakers outside the tackles with Christian Kirk (991 yards, 71 rushes, 10 TD’s) and Jhamon Ausbon (571 yards, 50 receptions, 3 TD’s) will each be looking to step up this year to become the go to receiver for the Aggies.

Defensively, they are left with a solid nucleus of players with experience and tenacity with end Kingsley Keke (54 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 sack), Landis Durham (55 tackles, 11 .5 TFL, 10 sacks) will lead the charge up front for Texas A&M this year while LB’s Tyrell Dodson (104 tackles, 10 TL, 5.5 sacks) along with Otaro Alaka (78 tackles, 12.5 TL, 5 sacks) will be the defensive leaders for the middle of the defense.  Derrick Tucker (55 tackles) and Debione Renfroe (53 tackles) will lead the secondary in 2018 and will certainly be looking to make a huge impact.

Texas A&M's Latest Performance :

Northwestern State has an issue most team would certainly like to possess:  A trio of QB’s that are highly competing for the number 1 job in 2018.  The problem is that two of the candidates are talented, yet, are freshman while the other is a sophomore with not much experience up until this point in their careers.  Whether they decide on Aaron Howell, Kaleb Fletcher, or Kenny Sears, the Demons are likely to experience growing pains as their backfield as well as receiving corps will be young as well.  In all, they will need time to grow with each other on both sides of the ball in which to outdo their performance from last year.  They will, however, have Quan Shorts (109 yards, 9 receptions, 2 TD’s) who will be a junior this year.  It is hoped that he can be a solid go to receiver as well as be a leader for the many amounts of young talent that will be incorporated into the offense.

While it was very difficult attempting to obtain any type of information at all on this Southland Conference team, I will say that the defense will be led by Senior Obinna Iheoma along with Sophomore Braylen Daigle who will man the defensive end position for the Demons.  Finally, Malik Sonnier will command the defensive backfield as the sophomore looks to have a major impact as to how successful Northwestern State is in 2018.

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

It would be difficult to determine just how the Aggie will perform on Saturday.  While I would love for Fisher to get his first win at College Station against Northwestern State, the Aggies have had a knack for making what should be easy games look much more difficult than needed.  With this being the case, it will be interesting to gauge the focus for this team in week 1 during a game that they should have well in hand before the half.  Of course, if not the case, it may indeed begin the rumblings concerning their new hire afterwards.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Texas A&M

My reason for the pick :

While there has been no published line on this matchup yet, I will back the Aggies to come out very strong against what will be an overmatched squad in Northwestern State.  The Aggies will likely be utilizing both QB’s throughout the beginning of the year in which to better determine which they will stick with during the season, however, for this particular matchup, it really does not matter who is trotted out under center, the Aggies will control the line of scrimmage on both sides, while holding the Demons offense to not many total yards in week 1.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under

My reason for the prediction :

With the talent that the Aggies possess on defense, I happen to feel strongly that they will totally eliminate the Demons offense from the equation.  With that being said, it will only become a matter as to how many potential points could this offense score against a weaker opponent in Northwestern State.  The fact is that I have no clue, which would be exactly why I will back the under in this contest.  Look for A&M to look very good against NSU, however, I see this being an offense that will start slow due to their loss of playmakers from a year ago.
