Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
Northwesters Wildcats vs Purdue Boilermakers
The Northwestern Wildcats will travel to Ross Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Indiana, for a Big Ten matchup to take on the Purdue Boilermakers on Saturday, 8-30-2018, at 8 pm EST, as week 1 of the college football season will officially be underway. Pat Fitzgerald will look to improve upon his team’s 10-3 record in 2017, good for 2nd place in the Big Ten West division, with some nice pierces to the puzzle coming into the season. They will also be looking for a much better start to the season as they would come out of the game with a record of 2-3 in their first 5 games while reeling off 7-straight to end the season. Purdue, on the other hand, will certainly need to improve upon its 7-6 record last year (4th in Big Ten West) while coach Jeff Brohme will continue to preach the necessity of having a strong defensive presence to compete within one of the most competitive conferences in college football. Last year, the Boilermakers would fall to the Northwestern Wildcats by a 23-13 score on the road in week 1 as Purdue would seemingly do enough to win the game by outgaining the Wildcats in total yards (438-390) while also outpacing them in the air by almost 100 yards; Nonetheless, Northwestern’s tough running game would grind out 94 yards compared to only 40 for Purdue to allow the Cats to pick up the victory on 8-30-2017
Northwesters Wildcats's Latest Performance :
Clayton Thorson (2844 yards, 60.4 completion %, 15 TD’s, 12 INT’s) will return for the Northwestern Wildcats as signal caller and while losing an important piece in the backfield in Justin Jackson to graduation, will rely on Sophomore running back Jeremy Larkin (503 yards, 84 attempts, 5 TD’s) to carry the load on the ground while junior Ben Skowronek (644 yards, 45 receptions, 5 TD’s) and senior Flynn Nagel (489 yards, 48 receptions, 2 TD’s) will be Thorson’s main targets and look to pace the receiving corps this year.
Defensively, the Wildcats would lose quite a few players on defense, however, they will be returning linebackers sophomore Paddy Fisher (111 tackles, 9 TFL, 1 INT) and senior Nate Hall (81 tackles, 17 TL, 2 INT) who will be the leaders for a defense that would get better as the season wore on last year. Also, a pivotal piece at cornerback will also be returning for Northwestern as senior Montre Hartage (57 tackles, 2 INT’s) will also look to lead a defensive secondary that, despite their great play up front, were burned more times than they would have liked last year by their opponents.
Purdue Boilermakers 's Latest Performance :
Elijah Sindelar would go for 2099 yards last season for this Purdue squad with 18 TD along with 7 INT’s (56.8% completion), yet, looks to be even more of a critical piece to an offense that proved as the season wore one last year that they can certainly tough it out, particularly, in the trenches. Sindelar will have familiar help in the backfield in Senior Markell Jones who would rush for 566 yards on 113 attempts and 1 TD last year along with DJ Knox who would also impress last year in rushing for 2 TD’s and 561 yards rushing (90 Attempts). Their receiving corps will be a bit young with SO Jackson Anthrop looking to become the go to guy after a 47 reception, 423-yard, 5 TD campaign in 2017.
The defense for Purdue will be lead by JR Lorenzo Neal (22 tackles, 3 sacks) who will serve as the leader of a young defense. Junior LB Markus Bailey will also lend some assistance to Neal as he would rack up 89 total tackles last year along with 7 sacks and an INT in 2017. Senior Jacob Thineman and his 79 tackles last year along with 2 INT’s and 2 sacks will man the defensive secondary from his safety position for the Boilermakers while looking to make more of an impact for his team while junior Navon Mosely (65 tackles, 2 INT’s, 1 sack) will accompany Thineman in the secondary in which to lock down the opponents passing attack as well as provide runs support when needed.
How Northwesters Wildcats & Purdue Boilermakers Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
As two Big Ten teams, the Wildcats and Purdue matchup up well with each other. Also, both are looking to rebound from a less than stellar seasons last year and would like nothing more than to get their first win of the season against a division foe. In all, I see this being an exciting matchup that will certainly be a leaner for the Wildcats, despite being on the road.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Northwestern Wildcats -3
My reason for the pick :
Northwestern has dominated this series in their last 4 meetings as their wins would come by an average of 17 points per game. While the Wildcats have fallen off a bit both on defense and offense due to the loss of individual talent, however, Fitzgerald will certainly challenge his team to step up and fill in the gaps in 2018. With that being said, I will back the Wildcats in this matchup in that while I believe that Purdue will certainly be focus and intense for the task that awaits them at home in week 1, they continue to be a work in progress, in general. It is for this reason that I expect the Wildcats to get a solid win in West Lafayette go begin the season as they had planned.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over
My reason for the prediction :
The over has been the play in the last 2 outings in Indiana for these squads. This is in stark contrast to the under being the call in the last 2 games at Northwestern. The average win for NW at home versus Purdue is 44-27 while it was much tighter at Purdue with the combined score for their last 2 games being 83-31. In all, Purdue will have some life in the opening week, however, expect the Wildcats to toughen up on D as well as in the trenches to take control of this game over time. Nonetheless, expect there to be some points scored as he trends suggests.
