Pick, Prediction, & Preview:

Syracuse Orange vs W.Michigan

Dino Baber’s Syracuse Orangeman will travel to Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to meet the Western Michigan Broncos on 6 pm EST on Friday, August 31st, 2018 in week 1 of the college football season.  The Broncos will be looking to improve upon a season to where they would end at a record of 6-6 to which they would not be invited to a bowl game.  Of course, Tim Lester’s Broncos certainly look to improve on both sides of the ball in which to become more competitive in 2018 as they certainly have some pieces in place in which to do so.  The Orange of Syracuse would end the season at 4-8 and will be looking for much more consistency on both sides of the ball as well this year as they will certainly be tried not only in week one, but, on a week to week basis by playing in one of the fiercest leagues in the nation (ACC).  This will be the first ever matchup amongst these two squads, however, I am sure both will be looking to begin he season on a high note, nonetheless.

Syracuse Orange's Latest Performance :

Senior Eric Dungy (2495 yards, 14 TD’s, 5 INT’s) is healthy and will be looking to end his up and down tenure with the Orange on a high note this year.   He was also the leading rusher on the team for 2017 in gaining 595 yards on 143 rushes with 9 TD’s.  And while the Orange may indeed be working with a young receiving corps this year, they will certainly have an experienced backfield with Senior Dante Strickland (482 yards, 128 rushes, 4 TD’s) along with Moe Newal (488 yards, 92 rushes, 1 TD) joining him.  Also, Ravian Pierce (263 yards, 29 receptions, 4 TD’s) will also be looking for targets for this Syracuse receiving corps.

Defensively, the Orange will certainly be losing out on a lot of senior talent that graduated last year, they will be experienced in the secondary as well in that Junior Evan Foster (64 tackles, 1.5 TFL) will be retuning at defensive back while Christopher Frederick (43 tackles, 2 TFL) will join Foster at the safety position in which to provide leadership and experience for a very young group.

W.Michigan 's Latest Performance :

Jon Wassink will once again take the helm at the QB position for the Broncos this year and as a Junior, will be looing for improvement over his 64.2 completion % along with 1291 yards, 14 TD’, and 4 INT’s in 2017.  Jamauri Bogan (589 yards, 112 rushes, 3 TD’s) will join him in the backfield while Levante Bellamy (394 yards, 49 rushes, 3 TD’s) will also split time with Bogan behind Wassink.  Wide receivers D’Wayne Eskeridge (506 yards, 30 Receptions, 3 TD’s) along with Keishawn Watson (374 yards, 41 receptions, 7 TD’s) will also look to make some big plays for the offense of the Broncos this year.

The Western Michigan defense will face their growing pains up front with players such as Caleb Bailey, Robert Spillane, and Asantay Brown would graduate, however, they will certainly be experienced within the defensive secondary as returner starter Stephan Claibourne (64 tackles) will join Devontae Ginwright (50 tackles) as the sophomore and junior combo will look to be an intimidating presence for opposing offenses.

How Syracuse Orange & W.Michigan Matchup.

Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:

In-Depth Analysis of each team:

I feel as if this will be a great starting matchup for week 1 in that you have a middle of the road ACC team in Syracuse going up against what was recently and up and coming Western Michigan team from the MAC.  In all, one could expect this game to really be a competitive one in that both teams will be looking to erase the memory of a horrible season while beginning anew with a win in 2018.  In all, look for both the attempt to set the tone early in the trenches while setting up their running game.

Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Western Michigan +6

My reason for the pick :

Of course, with Eric dungy returning for the Orange, there are many expectations in Syracuse at this point, however, it is a fact that the Orange lost a ton of talent last year and, essentially, are in rebuilding mode.  Many Orange fans would simply hope that the receiving corps (which happens to be the most inexperienced for the offense) will overperform this year while crossing their fingers that Dungy can stay healthy for the season.  This WMU team also loss a wealth of talent, particularly, on the defensive side of the ball.  With that being said, the Orange should really be able to move the ball on this squad.  Nonetheless, the Orange D has been decimated by graduation as well, particularly, at the LB spot.  So, the Broncos will also have some opportunities to gains some momentum in the form of picking up some first downs throughout this game.  Nonetheless, with all that being said, I will side with the Broncos at home to keep this one close against a Syracuse tea that will be attempting to figure out who exactly they will be this year.

Totals Selection: Pick: Under 64.5

My reason for the prediction :

Of course, with rebuilding defenses, one could make a case that the finale score for this contest will certainly surpass the 64.5 total mark.  However, with 2 rebuilding offenses that lost much talent due to graduation, one could also make a case that even if present opportunities to score, would each team really know how to capitalize on this.  With Dungy at the helm, one could give the edge to the Orange in this department; Nonetheless, Wassinck has experience as well and will be looking to make an impression in his senior campaign.  In all, I will strongly choose the under to be the play in this matchup as both teams will trade 3 and outs for much of the game until fatigue begins to set in.  By then, the odds of them both covering this spread would be almost possible to don’t bet your life.
