Utah St Aggies vs Mich State Spartans
The Utah State Aggies will travel to Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan, to battle the Michigan State Spartans in week 1 of the college football season on Friday, August 31st, 2018, beginning at 7:00 pm EST. The Utah State Aggies would win 3 of their last 5 games in 2017 to become bowl eligible. They would ultimately meet New Mexico State in the Arizona Bowl to which they would lose by a score of 26-20 in OT on 12-29-2017. Despite being a disappointing year, Matt Wells sees much potential in this group that will be returning for Utah State in 2018. Mark Dantonio and the MSU Spartans would finish with a 10-3 record last year while gong 7-2 in the Big Ten. They would win 3 of their last 4 games to be invited to the Holiday Bowl on 12-28-2017 to where they would drag Washington State by a score of 42-17. With their signal caller returning for his Junior season, Dantonio possess even more positive expectations for his team this year. This will be the first ever meeting amongst these two squads.
Utah St Aggies's Latest Performance :
Jordan Love (1631 yards, 54.9% efficiency, 8 TD’s, 6 INT’s) will call the shots for the offense once again for 2018 while the Aggies have just about lost all their talent due to graduation, form a year ago which will likely leave the job to young, yet, inexperienced talent his year. Eltoro Allen (284 yards, 68 rushes, 1 TD) will look to get more snaps as the running back position works itself out while Senior Ron’Quavion Tarver 569, 48 receptions, 7 TD’s) will be the leading receiver on this time. Jordan Nathan (324 yards, 35 receptions, 2 TD’s) along with Sophomore TE Dax Raymond (456 yards, 41 receptions, 1 TD) will also look to be an offensive option for this upcoming season.
The Defensive unit will be led by Suliasi Tamaivena (111 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 3 sacks) and Chase Christianson (71 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack) while the secondary will primarily be manned by both Baron Gajkowski (50 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT) along with Senior Gaje Ferguson (90 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack). Junior kicker Dominic Eberle will also return after a sophomore season to where he was 47-47 from field goal range in 2017.
Mich State Spartans's Latest Performance :
Brian Lewerke (2703 yards, 20 TD’s 7 INT’s, 59% efficiency) will lead the offense this year as he will be assisted in the backfield by LJ Scott (898 yards, 201 rushes, 8 TD’s) who will certainly look to improve upon his numbers while Senior Madre London (304 yards, 83 rushes) will also have considerable snaps in the backfield. Sophomore receiver Cody White (490 yards, 35 receptions, 4 TD’s) will look to be the man for the receiving corps while Felton Davis (776 yards, 55 catches, 9 TD’s) will also be looking to make some plays for the MSU offense in 2018.
Linebacker Joe Bachie (100 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT’s) will head the defensive unit for MSU this year while Andrew Dowell (75 tackles, 3 TFL, 1,5 sacks) will be his counterpart that manages the belly of the defensive unit. How Utah St Aggies & Mich State Spartans Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
I would say that this looks as if it could really be a mismatch in favor of the home team. Michigan State will hold the upper hand in this matchup, however, Utah State will certainly be up for the challenge that will await them at Spartan Stadium. In the end, both teams will certainly play hard in week 1, however, the cream will always rise to the top. In this case, that would mean the Spartans.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: Michigan State -25
My reason for the pick :
Again, this will be the first matchup amongst these two squads ever, so, their will be no familiarly there. ON the other hand, what is known is that while MSU looks to build off their decent record last year, the Aggies are looking to acclimate their new talent into skilled positions on both sides of the ball in which to remain competitive this season. Of course, we know how much of an advantage it could simply by playing at a venue such as Spartan Stadium, however, I would say that due to this home field advantage, the home team will benefit greatly. In fact, with the type of talent on both sides of the ball, I would back the Spartans to indeed cover the spread as this USU team will find them simply too much to handle.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over 49.5
My reason for the prediction :
I will choose the over in this matchup simply because I have a feeling that the Spartans will be looking to start the year off on a winning, yet, offensive note in this matchup. It is for this reason that they will certainly be looking to take control of the trenches early on, thus allowing for their running game with Scott to take charge. From there, their passing game will open, eventually putting the game out of reach. Though they will not be trying to run up the score, they will simply be that much better than the Aggies that the score will balloon before one knows it.
