Pick, Prediction, & Preview:
UTSA Road Runners vs Arizona State Sun Devils
The Texas San Antonio Road Runners will travel to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in week 1 college football action at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday, 9-1-2018. UTSA comes into the season with a bit of a chip on their shoulders after losing 3 of their last 5 to end the season at 6-5, yet, did not receive an invitation to the postseason from bowl sponsors. With that being said, they will certainly look to duplicate the winning formula that works so well for the first half of the 2017 season, however, they will also look to maintain their focus and intensity throughout the season to avoid a snub from occurring twice in as many years. The Arizona State Sun Devils would end the season winning 3 of their last 5 games to be invited to the Sun Bowl on 12-29-2017 to where they would fall to the NC state Wolfpack by a 52-31 score. With some pieces of the puzzle still in place for the Devils, Coach Todd Graham is tasked with ensuring that a focus on a consistent offense along with a quick and aggressive defense remains throughout the season. These teams would last meet on 9-16-2016 as the Sun Devils would pick up the 32-28 win on the road as they would not cover as huge favorites (-20.5) while the over was the play with the total being set at 58 points.
UTSA Road Runners's Latest Performance :
Sophomore Bryce Rivers will be given the keys to the UTSA offense as he received minimal snaps in 2017. The development of the running game could really benefit Rivers, however, much of the experienced backs and receivers graduated last year. Nonetheless, the Road Runners will rely on Senior Jalen Rhodes (659 yards, 134 attempts, 5 TD’s) to be the go to guy as it relates to the rushing attack while Chance McLeod will look to step up tremendously for the offense that struggled in the passing game in 2017.
Defensively, the Road Runners would be hit hard in just about every position, however, Senior safeties Carl Austin Jr (48 tackles, 4.5 TFL) along with C.J. Levine (46 tackles, 3 TFL) will hope to provide some leadership to a team that will certainly need to incorporate new players into their overall scheme rather quickly in which to remain competitive during the early games within their schedule.
Arizona State Sun Devils 's Latest Performance :
Senior Manny Wilkins (3270 yards, 20 TD’s, 8 INT’s) will return for ASU in hopes of advancing his team to becoming one of the teams to beat within the Pac-12 in 2018. Though the running game was hit hard by graduation, he will be joined in the backfield by Eno Benjamin (142 yards, 23 attempts, 1 TD) who will be looking to step up after a season of limited playing time in which to become the go to back for the Sun Devils. Juniors N’Keal Harry (1142 yards, 82 receptions, 8 TD’s) will be the lead receiver for the Sun Devils while Kyle Williams (763 yards, 66 receptions, 7 TD’s) will also be called upon the step up even more for ASU in 2018. Senior Jalen Harvey (558 yards, 33 receptions, TD) will provide much needed leadership to an already talented receiving corps.
Defensively, the Sun Devils will be led by defensive lineman Jojo Wicker (43 tackles, 14 TFL, 6 sacks) will provide some leadership in the trenches while their linebacking corps was also hit hard by graduation, yet, Christian Sam (127 tackles, 9.5 TFL, 3 sacks) will return for his Senior year to man the middle of the D while CB Chase Lucas (59 tackles) will also look to make more of an impact for ASU throughout the year.
How UTSA Road Runners & Arizona State Sun Devils Matchup.
Vegas Odds, Offshore Odds, & Odds ATS:
In-Depth Analysis of each team:
While it is week one and anything can indeed happen, I feel as if this matchup will be one where the Sun Devils will certainly take a chunk out of the heart of the Road Runners as they will most certainly be badly mismatched in this contest. Of course, the Devils need each and every win that they can pick up as they goal should be to steadily improve over their last disastrous season. This matchup may be interesting for a quarter or so, yet, the Bears will slowly begin to dominate this game, thus leaving a young and inexperienced Road Runner squad confused and dazed.
Against The Spread Selection: Pick: ASU -18.5
My reason for the pick :
I will back the Sun Devils and the points in this matchup as the Road Runners were bitten by the graduation bug last year and will certainly struggle in compensating for the talent that they would lose from last year. The Devils, on the other hand, certainly have some pieces to their offense that could make them an offensive threat in the Pac-12, despite their defense needing to establish themselves early in the schedule in which to prepare for matchups that await. In all, this will be a high-scoring game to where the Sun Devils will take control early in which to cruise to victory in week 1.
Totals Selection: Pick: Over 54
My reason for the prediction :
With both teams having to regroup and retool in 2018, it would be a strong play to back the over in this contest. The truth of the matter is that despite the players lost to graduation for UTSA, the Sun Devils have head to deal with subtractions to their defense as well. It is for this reason that I would expect the Road Runners to keep this game close early, however, ASU will slowly gain control of the trenches which will allow them to finish off UTSA early in the second half en route to a huge victory.
